Terrible game but good day out. WGS didn’t play a recognised striker that day and last time he did. Turned out to be rather a good season… I seem to have attended many of the the games no one else fancied. This is another that sticks in my mind as I took my Dad, who lived up Norf, didnt really like watching football but came anyway to make me happy. I travelled up from the South Coast to all the Northern games back then and took advantage of his hospitality. He spent the whole game telling me to (and pulling my jacket to make me) sit down and stop swearing at Uriah Rennie. I think even he smiled when Bridger scored. I loved Bridger (I think his brother was a friend of a friend, so he was seen as one of us) and to see him score a late winner (I actually thought we won that game) and do a Micky Channon type celebration (I might be wrong there too) was bloody fantastic - I'm smiling now just thinking about it. Might have been his first goal? Felt like it. I reckon there might have been about 300 there in that upper tier. I enjoyed it, but the Reebock and games in the 2000s weren't a patch on the Burnden Park FA Cup experience. Edited Wednesday at 14:05 by Chez 1

Good goal very out of keeping with the game, jinking run, beat a couple of Bolton defenders cutting to rifle in. Djorkaeff was very late with their goal, 95th minute and literally last kick of the game. My friend got offered out by another Saints fan at half-time in the concourse for being too critical of the players and strikerless formation (we struggled for goals early on but put that right after that game). Bloke had a young kid with him and three of us, my friend is six-foot plus and a solid unit. Not sure what his aim was there… I went to the 2005 game and missed Phillips scoring urinating having over indulged in the local Bank Top ale! 1

We had the whole away end which was open, uncovered seating i think? Cracking game but a dead rubber. Yup that was the game, think we played them twice there in fairly quick succession, the 4-3 game and a midweek game where Le Tiss scored one of his wonder goals. Barnsley itself was a proper weird place, the most northern town i've ever been to, loads of hills a couple of factories and and a football ground in a field (pretty much). Plus all the locals looked like Weebles. I did both games and actually ended up having to hitchhike back from the cup game as i got stuck, managed to get a lift down from Barnsley to Winchester with some random Saints fans who'd driven, then had to figure out the last part home in the early hours of the morning. Shaw, Bale, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chambers and many others didn't really bother me, but Bridge was one. Kevin Davies the first time he left annoyed me and when we lost Shearer, Flowers and Kenna leaving around the same time annoyed me too.

He was one of my favourite players as a kid. He had two really good seasons and then started going on about wanting to play for a bigger club, he left for QPR. QPR FFS. I know back then they were an established first division (the old proper first division) side but QPR FFS. 1
