Weston Saint Posted 23 April, 2024 Posted 23 April, 2024 Comments on here about Abbott and Abbas. They were not given a contract for this year, they were already under contract. I suspect if they were not, one would not have received a contract this season. We would have looked at an overseas batsman. Dean Elgar was mentioned but he would have been very expensive. Anyway we could not go for him this year. We have also suffered in the bowling by the absence of Keith Barker, out injured. He has a knee injury that was recovering until he injured it again! Due a procedure which, if successful, will mean him playing soon. If it is not they he will be out for a long time. Turner was practicing at lunch on Friday so hopefully not too far away 1
Weston Saint Posted 25 April, 2024 Posted 25 April, 2024 John Turner is in the 13 for Surrey tomorrow along with Brad Wheal after his game with Glamorgan. Other 11 are unchanged.
Lighthouse Posted 25 April, 2024 Posted 25 April, 2024 It’ll be interesting to see if JT makes the XI and for who. You’d have thought Holland.
Window Cleaner Posted 26 April, 2024 Posted 26 April, 2024 Two down already again. Pity, Orr looked pretty handy before he got it all wrong and gave up an easy catch. Middleton got a good ball that was too quick for him.
Lighthouse Posted 26 April, 2024 Posted 26 April, 2024 Gubbins dropped on 9, then Vince out for 5 next ball. Bit of a mare so far.

We are just proving once again that against quality quicks we are lamentably bad at batting. Prest gone first ball. Never mind, we'll probably make about 120 and our seamers will plug away all day whilst Surrey make 500. Edited 26 April, 2024 by Window Cleaner
Hodgey Posted 26 April, 2024 Posted 26 April, 2024 Ahh our yearly thrashing at the oval !.To be fair they are much better than pretty much any other team, especially one that never bats well there. Surrey will be all out for maximum points here and a quick finish
wadesmith Posted 26 April, 2024 Posted 26 April, 2024 (edited) We’re very much on the backfoot here. Edited 26 April, 2024 by wadesmith
Lighthouse Posted 26 April, 2024 Posted 26 April, 2024 46/4 in reply, we’ve certainly rocked them so far. I’m sure they’ll get a partnership going eventually and probably lead by at least a hundred.
Lighthouse Posted 26 April, 2024 Posted 26 April, 2024 Punjab Kings have just completed the highest ever T20 run chase, after being set 261 to win.

Key first hour tomorrow which will go a long way to deciding the game. Get Burns early, Steel and Clark quickly and could limit the lead to 20-30 runs. Can’t afford any partnerships to build though. Abbas brilliant bowling 13-7-7-1, Abbott 2-35 off 13, Wheal adding pace and kept it accurate 1-25 off 12. Fuller a bit looser but did get Pope out plus made vital runs in our innings. Must have been a real green one, even the Kookaburra would have swung let alone the Dukes which seams as well. Edited 26 April, 2024 by Gloucester Saint
Hodgey Posted 27 April, 2024 Posted 27 April, 2024 Surrey get a decent total in testing conditions, be surprised if they need to bat again. Hope we’re not playing them again this year (I know we beat them in a dead rubber last year)
Window Cleaner Posted 27 April, 2024 Posted 27 April, 2024 Oh FFS when are we going to get some decent openers? Capable of seeing off the new ball against decent seamers, just like openers are supposed to do.

Fuller and Wheal, well it's just straight up and down most of the time. No lift, no swing, nada, always a ball somewhere in each over just begging to be hit. Abbas bowls nice stuff, but it's not going to do much against entrenched batsman like Burns, just keeps the runs down from his end. Compared to class acts like Worrall, it's second rate, even pretty rubbish. Against good sides in the Championship, we've become sort of second rate. Edited 27 April, 2024 by Window Cleaner 1
Weston Saint Posted 28 April, 2024 Posted 28 April, 2024 We are also 2 overs behind the over rate so will face 2 points deduction if we do not bowl again and catch up!

Gloucester Saint Posted 28 April, 2024 Posted 28 April, 2024 116-5 close, unless it’s rain all day tomorrow it’s going to be a Surrey win. Vince and Prest did put on 46 but Gus Atkinson came on bowling 90mph+ and Vince needed treatment after a hit on the shoulder and out not long after. Surrey with their weapons with ball and bat won’t define Hampshire’s D1 status, it’s the Worcestershire, Kent, Notts and Somerset where wins need to be accrued to stay up.
wadesmith Posted 29 April, 2024 Posted 29 April, 2024 This teams on life support. Can score runs, can’t bowl our overs quick enough, can’t take wickets. Reboot urgently needed. Vince has got to get his act together, a county batting average of 39 is about 5 less than it should be. He’s a far more talented player than Carberry, but Carbs had the fortitude. Needs to take a look at himself.

Looks like a 2 point fine as well unless the final two wickets can put on stands bigger than the rest of the innings. It is a poor performance but when you look at their team and ours, how many Hampshire players make their first team, genuinely? Possibly Dawson for Cameron Steel (ex-Hants loanee, was an opener then). It’s internationals vs second XI in places. Their other 90mph option (Overton) was injured too! Curran brothers at the IPL too. Durham would have been a better litmus test than Surrey or Lancs. Worcs, Notts (even worse start), Kent and Somerset - they are the games that are must-win. Points elsewhere are a bonus.
Andrew Watson Posted 29 April, 2024 Posted 29 April, 2024 Another 4 day no show at - The Oval, this could be a season to forget in 4 day cricket and there I was thinking of a 5th place finish. Rory Burns showed by gutsing it out as an opener that it is possible to put a decent score on the board,do not think it helps that are openers are just 22 and 23 respectively.

If you're good enough you're old enough, might not be the case here though. Not much difference really, our "openers" have looked iffy against good bowling for years now. I'd agree with the above comment about Vince though, didn't have a great winter, running here there and everywhere after the green folding, looks dodgy every time he gets bogged down a bit. 1
Lighthouse Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Interesting team today. Turner and Abbas both in the 14 but don’t make the match day 11, looks like we’re going for the extra spin option of Organ.
wadesmith Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 The Turner situation does concern me. He’s clearly one of the most promising young bowling talents in world cricket, (reminds me of Glenn Mcgrath) He’s young , tall & already suffering injury problems. We’re struggling, yet we aren’t putting him straight back in the team...It just makes me wonder if Hampshire have their own concerns. Anyway we’re batting, hot day..weeks rest..330-4 at the end of the day. 😊
Window Cleaner Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Abbas must have some sort of niggle I suppose no one in their right mind would choose Wheal over Abbas. The Turner situation is just incomprehensible.

My only hope is that they are thinking this is a flat track, don’t risk him if he’s just going to be toiling all day....but as I said in my post above it concerns me.

Callum Parkinson is one of them, and took the wicket of Middleton. Hants 85-1, Orr reaching his 50 and building a stand with Gubbins. Durham’s bowling looks decent but long tail with the bat, Carse due at 7 when they bat. Clearly anticipating a flat track. BBC reporting they think it will help the spinners especially on days 3 and 4.
Barsiem Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Hopefully they're just being super cautious with Turner. We don't want him being as injury prone as Archer (will we finally see him in the Hundred this year?) Anyway we're 85-1 at lunch and Orr has his first fifty for us. Hopefully he's getting to grips with the higher calibre of bowlers in D1 and goes on to find some form. Another low score for Middleton though 1
Lighthouse Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Cracking afternoon in the sun, this. Orr on 121 n/o and Vince now motoring along nicely. I can sort of see why we wouldn’t risk Turner in this one, the bowlers are having a real slog out there.

Weston Saint Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Abbas has a sickness, not injury. Not been able to find out why Turner not picked although he did play all three days of the second eleven match that finished yesterday. I am assuming with Abbas and Barker out they felt Wheal offered a little more experience. Turner will get his chance.
Hodgey Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Imagine we’ll see organ, Dawson, Prest and even Gubbins have a bowl, especially on day 4. Hopefully we have a couple of good sessions tomorrow, rack up a big score and put them in at end of day. if Organ bats 9, as a previous opening batter, that would suggest we’ve a very short tail !
Lighthouse Posted 10 May, 2024 Posted 10 May, 2024 Weather not looking great for Monday, important day tomorrow.

wadesmith Posted 12 May, 2024 Posted 12 May, 2024 Another draw. This season has been a joke. Difficult to draw people away from the 20/20 & The Hundred when shit like this is being served up week after week. Cricket is designed to fail on pitches like this. Sort it out Ha shire..I don’t give a stuff about any possible points deductions...this is tripe. Pitches are too safe, no one wants to watch this crap.
Lighthouse Posted 12 May, 2024 Posted 12 May, 2024 Trying to flog one day tickets for £10 for tomorrow. Dream on Hants, this is a nailed on bore-draw even without it invariably being rained off by 3pm.
badgerx16 Posted 14 May, 2024 Posted 14 May, 2024 Given the docility of the pitch, are we likely to see a home win at all this season ?

We've been playing every match on the furthest East wicket so far, I don't know if the others are being saved for the Blast or if it was tactical. Either way it looks like someone's going to need to have a 'mare with the bat for any kind of result. A bit of other mixed news today. Naveen wont be coming here, for personal reasons apparently but on the plus side Neser and Baker are in the squad for the first time this season.
Window Cleaner Posted 17 May, 2024 Posted 17 May, 2024 Won the toss, chose to field, 4 seamers, no Gubbins.
Lighthouse Posted 17 May, 2024 Posted 17 May, 2024 Started well enough, good to have KB and MA back in the team.
Window Cleaner Posted 17 May, 2024 Posted 17 May, 2024 (edited) Poor catching since lunch has let them off the hook. 3 drops, last one was pretty easy by the look of it. Edited 17 May, 2024 by Window Cleaner
Andrew Watson Posted 17 May, 2024 Posted 17 May, 2024 Must win game already, with Surrey next we really need to win 1 of our first 7 games and this is the best chance.
Window Cleaner Posted 17 May, 2024 Posted 17 May, 2024 Once again poor catching has shifted us from an excellent position to one which might become difficult if there's anything in the pitch for their seamers tomorrow morning. We've gifted them 80-100 runs again. Middleton dropped a sitter and the bloke went on to score about 90.
Window Cleaner Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Poor start to our innings, Orr went to his third ball and Organ isn't a first division cricketer. We surely must have better than he somewhere in our system. Vince riding his luck so far, hope it lasts.
Lighthouse Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 Vince falls just before lunch to leave us 61/3 and still trailing by 174. We’ve really sh*t the bed from 17/3 and 50/6 yesterday.

We should have dismissed them for about a hundred and started to bat in quite favourable conditions, instead they made 235 and we bat in the morning. A schoolboy could have caught the one Middleton dropped, just unprofessional everywhere this season.
wadesmith Posted 18 May, 2024 Posted 18 May, 2024 60/40 in Notts favour Imo Don’t fancy batting last on this. Lead of over 215 & we’re done I reckon.
