Fixtures have been announced. Looks like a tricky start playing Surrey and Durham twice and Warks and Lancs. Depends on how strong Durham are likely to be. Anyone know?

Posted

Durham have a good squad but have more central England contracts this year that might mean the star players aren't present. They're due to have Boland and Ackermenn with them this coming season who are both very good cricketers.

I think our squad is strong, we're relying again on bowling over batting this year I think

Playing teams like Surrey and Durham early on before the tests means their England players will probably be available .

New contracts for Prest, Albert, Middleton and Turner; great news.

Yeah fantastic news.  Not sure why they are saying multi year contracts rather than confirming actual length though?  Hopefully Turner in particular is tied for a good few years

Dawson overlooked for the India test series.  Rob Key has spoken about it as per the attached and below.  Interesting to know if Dawson was spoken to, or whether the decision was made for him

Hampshire slow left-armer Liam Dawson, who last played a Test in 2017, has not been included despite being the County Championship's leading English spinner in 2023, with 49 wickets at an average of 20.

"He is probably not someone who wants to go around India as the 15th or 16th man," said Key.

"If he's not going to play then I don't think it's high on his agenda to be going as essentially a replacement bowler."

I can tell you that if he was picked he would have gone but he was hoping he did not have to make the decision.

The quote from Key is exactly what his Mum said to me at the end of the season.

Not Hampshire related but the second test between South Africa and India was a mess; SA won the toss, batted first, and were all out for 55. India got to just oveer 150 for 4 before losing 6 wickets for 0 runs in 11 balls. The match ended in the middle of day 2 with India winning by 7 wickets in the shortest test, in terms of balls bowled, that had a positive result.

Vince hit 79 off 57 today for the Sixers as they beat the Stars in the BBL. He’s had a couple of decent games out there.

Yes that is true but he has been very inconsistent with two large innings where he was man of the match but with very small runs scored in other completed innings

Pity, really liked watching Ellis bowl.

anyone seen it being suggested we might be brought out by some group who own an IPL franchise? Sounds a bit odd!

Hampshire County Cricket Club’s majority shareholder is in advanced talks to sell his stake to the part-owners of Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals.

Telegraph Sport understands that Rod Bransgrove is close to agreeing a deal to sell to GMR Group, who part-own Delhi Capitals.

The deal would be a landmark moment and make Hampshire the first county to be owned by an overseas franchise.

Insiders believe the benefits of buying a county for GMR include a foothold in the English game, an opportunity to develop its own players, and “first-mover advantage” when Hundred franchises are put out for investment. Among the options being explored by the ECB is handing over a 50 per cent share in the Hundred teams – in the Ageas Bowl’s case, Southern Brave – to the host county, to sell to investors if they wish.

According to Back From The Brink, a book about Bransgrove’s time at Hampshire published last year, the business – which includes the Test match hosting Ageas Bowl, a hotel, golf course and the club – was valued at around £100 million, but also carries £60 million of debt.

Bransgrove, widely heralded for saving Hampshire in his 23 years in charge, stepped down as chairman at the end of last year, but remains the majority shareholder – holding more than 60 per cent of the shares – of the business.

Not seen enough of either of them to really comment but it would be a shame not to have Ellis back. I wonder if this was Nathan’s decision or ours.

Jheeze; the death of County Cricket as we know it.

I can’t see any overseas investor sticking around for long when they realise there is absolutely no money in county cricket. Can only assume any potential investor is pinning hopes on the hundred…

Given how the 1st test is going it's looking more than possible Dawson is called up.  Leach injured and judging by how the pitch seems to be we might be best playing 5 spinners each match ...

As widely predicted, Michael Naser (Australia) has signed for first 8 games of T20 for Hampshire. He will be available for all forms during that period.

I wonder if that is because Nathan Ellis may be in the Australian T20 squad for that same period.

I suspect Abbas will be away during that period as previous seasons so we have covered our Championship games during that same period with Naser.

I see that Crane has been loaned to Glamorgan, all formats for  the coming season. Probably just as well, hardly played for us last season.

Agreed, in most formats we'll play one spinner and that will be Dawson. Hopefully some more games and consistency reignites his career a bit, odd to think he has played an ashes test!

Plus we have Prest and Organ if needed. A lot of people on social media seem disappointed but I think it's a decent move for all concerned. It's just not been happening for him recently with Wheal back fit we're pretty stocked for bowlers.

Anyone know if Bas is likely to be around this season? Not featured in any of the warm up games and on his Instagram he appears to be training somewhere which is definitely not in the U.K.

Yep, just seen him share a photo of an Emirates plane with Hants tagged in it, so I’m guessing he’s on his way. Presumably he’ll be living in the Hilton again.
