country that butchered the middle east 20 years ago, has been awarded the Euros'....so.

Yep I actually agree with you. The US shouldn't be hosting another one either. Though in general I don't expect a country to be squeaky clean, but I do expect them to be better than imprisoning and flogging gay people. That's not a high bar.

Controversial. Care to explain why exactly you're so strongly in favour of a world cup in Saudi Arabia? ;)

My guess is he's currently being held in a Saudi prison and they threatened to chop his hands off if he didn't type some complimentary comments about them on social media.

Surely there's no way they can grant them the world cup if their proposal includes a stadium being built in a city that itself hasn't been built yet? They've got less than 10 years to build an entire fucking city.

this has massive shit show written all over it.

The entire indian, pakistani and bangladeshi building workforce are currently writing wills.

What happens if Israel qualify ?

The Saudis were aligning themselves with Israel against Iran before the October attacks.

I for one would enjoy watching an Israel vs Iran group game hosted in the tolerant police state that is saudi arabia. Guaranteed entertainment both on and off the pitch.

What happens, is roles are advertised all over south asia (for example) with promises of a good job and a good salary (that can be sent home to support families in poorer parts of the world). Often with free travel out to the middle east as part of the offer. Then they land, their passports are confiscated, often phones are confiscated, and then they're shipped off to work long hours and/or hard jobs for minimal pay (if any) - that can be anything from maids living in windowless box rooms and working long hours, or labour on construction projects with minimal safety / welfare provision, long hours, and terrible conditions. They don't get their passports back either. Happens all over the middle east, and the Saudis are certainly guilty of it - they go out and target the vulnerable and desperate. Grim.

I'm of the opinion it will end up being a massive success at massive expense. If Qatar and Russia got away with sportwashing I'm sure SA will give it a bloody good go.

It's a very different place to Qatar, socially, demographically, physically, despite the geographic and cultural similarities.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if by 2034 you can have a drink at the ground.

They've got 10 years to build it all, which should be plenty.

If they get the right people in charge of the fan experience, get the accommodation and transport sorted in good time it'll probably be a better event. Will have to be in the winter again, though.

Look forward to seeing all the lads carry on the LGBT+ rainbow tops/laces campaign. Although with the progress we are making we might be picking a few players that used to be girls by then.

THankfully all the woke madness is coming to an end over here in the US - I hope the UK follows suit in due course!

Wonder how much money was promised to FIFA to be awarded this tournament.  No doubt the European seasons will be disrupted for this tournament.......

once it stops  fashionable it'll be amazing how few people now think they're in the wrong body. And all the rainbow laces, tops and all that other bollocks will hopefully disappear too.

Still, as long as the usual suspects got their brown envelopes who cares.

Snouts in the trough. It’s unbelievable that England hasn’t had a World Cup since 1966 when we have some of the best stadiums in the world already built yet the US has two in 30 years.

Only to be replaced by Trump/Musk madness. But hey, those MAGA baseball caps make y’all look so cool! If Farage gets his way we will also go down the shitter. Happy days.

There will no doubt be a few posters on this thread off to the Magic Kingdom to watch the tournament: those who obviously have a problem with anybody  on the LGBTQ spectrum and make their feelings known. Bless, they're obviously a bit insecure in their masculinity. I've never known confident guys to have any worries or need to comment.

The same applies to the comments on 'woke'.. pesky need for equality and talking about it eh?

Mind you, having taught English as a Foreign Language to some from that neck of the woods I  reckon I'd probably be safer than some of you lot. Like public school boys they feel safer with guys...

What absolute, utter drivel.  Nothing to do with issues with equality - people should be able to live their lives how they see fit if it doesn't harm anyone else - but having politically correct crap forced down your throat every single day and people - like you - offended by the slightest little comment is an absolute joke.

A bit like the mad rush to say how wonderful women's football is when clearly it is a massively inferior product.  How are the crowds for womens football these days and should they be paid the same as the mens teams?

You're obviously very insecure about it otherwise you wouldn't be so angry all the time.  We all know you're a lovely, decent, tolerant person right until someone doesn't see the world exactly how you do.
