January Transfer Window 2024

Entrup was one of three subs, (as was Danso), who came on in the 89th and 90th minutes and played 7 minutes of extra time.  Sakaria remained on the bench.  We must have learned a lot!  What a waste of time and money.  None of the players had a double-barrelled surname so it truly was a wasted journey.  One was called Posch and another Tah, though.  Why do we wait until a year after RH has gone before we are interested in Austrian players?

Amen. Transfer windows have overtaken the actual games for a sizeable chunk of modern football fans.

Transfer speculation was always fun (in my time anyway). It's just now it's all crammed into two short spaces of time

The main question is who will we lose in this window

KS, KWP,CA ?

KWP needs locking away in a cellar during the window  he is vital to our promotion prospects.

Replacing him like for like is near impossible in a short space of time and would mean that we’d probably be looking at Bree and Ryan as starting full backs.. which is acceptable - but obviously a drop in quality. And with NO back up as Larios is untried and anyways seems always injured. Any new FB brought in must learn russball - and weve seen it can take months.
Saints  : DO NOT SELL KWP this window!
As for CA and KS. Attacking talents/ prospects who currently, statistically, do not score enough do not create enough and who, currently, are our least reliable at defensive out of possession work are probably most vulnerable to being sold if a good offer comes in.

I personally think both will get better and better - though I’m a little disappointed at them not tearing this league up ( yet) as it should be easy pickings for their quality - but it takes time I guess.  In any case they both have got a much higher resale value if we get promoted. So, again, for me, not for sale.

That Fraser and Sam, Aribo and Amo are all in the background does suggest SR could be tempted if a ridiculous offer comes in though.m for them. And I think Che is obviously going to be a target for someone..

In Terms of buy or loan my #1 priority would be an experienced two footed full back please.

I love KWP. He has been my favourite player for a few years. But find it hard to see how we can keep him, especially with his current form. He should be playing for a top six Premier League  team rather than knocking around in the Championship.

I don't see us selling him in January. He will go in the summer.

We won't lose anyone IMO, unless we want rid of them. I can see Che Adams going due to losing his starting spot, and the fact he was practically gone in the summer, but that's about it.

Think other key players will all give us to the summer at least.

I'm not sure he's top 6. Of the current top 6 you might argue he's better than Cash, but I'm not sure there's a lot in it and even teams further down like Brighton, Newcastle and Chelsea have better players in his position. Fortunately for us there's an abundance of good right backs around.

If we don't go up I can see someone like Palace maybe taking a punt on him if they could afford him - he's a similar player to Clyne who will be out of contract this summer.

I don’t think KWP will go mid-season, he had 18 months left. I’d like to think we’ll cash in on him in the summer - once our club position is confirmed.

Sulemana is a difficult one, bouts of genius and other times where he looks a little uninterested. It wouldn’t surprise me if we had an agreement with him prior to him joining us a year ago that should a bid of a reasonable amount come in then he’ll be free to go.
Ultimately, that bud wasn’t received in the summer, and I can’t see it coming about this January.

Alcaraz I’m confident will stay be here come February. He’s just signed a new long term contract - no doubt it’ll have some form of agreement or release clause in it that’ll probably allow him to leave after a number of international appearances or a bid of high value. That’s generally how these things work.

I’m very confident Adams will go. All the guff of “we’ll see” from him has tumbled on for some time now. I think Birmingham are due a substantial sell on clause for any transfer - so it’s either we save money on wages or let him go for free at the end of the season and he can assess his options then.

I think we’ll get one or two incomings to bulk out the squad for the second half of the season, this next month with a game every three/four days will have some impact.
Outgoings will only be fringe players I imagine.

The main activity will come dependant on where we are in June. Just my thoughts.

I tell you what, though - we definitely won’t be selling JWP. Just don’t see him leaving.

Don’t know why I bother expecting this anymore but I really hope we pretty much put our foot down and shut up shop in January ..we have a decent shot of going up and it would be super annoying to just let decent players leave in the middle of a promotion chase

I really can't see any player the Club wants to keep, will leave in January.     If Stewart starts to get-it-together then Che A. going is possible.

Which poster was advocating for Openda a couple of summers ago when he moved to Lens for peanuts? I want to hear who else they recommend...

Gift Orban is another imo would have been a good one before he went to gent. I guess permit issues but this is where we should be using the owners multi club structure to our benefit

Maybe things are different now but it's worth remembering that last time we got relegated from the Premier League, we did better in our second Championship season than our first. So I'm not sure it's all or nothing, although obviously better to get promoted this year if we can.

Good point. We signed Skacel, Rasiak, Saganowski, Pele, Kelvin Davis, Idiakez, Viafara and Wright-Philips to help reshape the side. Please tell me we have another `Gareth Bale' coming through the youth ranks though, as he made a huge difference.

In a dream window we'd sign Downes and Harwood-Bellis permanently, keep KWP, and sign a striker to replace Adams who seems to have completely lost form (since the summer window closed 😉)

And Stewart would finally be fully fit.

But in reality we'll probably send a few youngsters out on loan,  sell Adams and do little else, after lots of scares about KWP and Bazunu.

I can't remember myself but it was a good one as I did agree with the poster that I liked him as I saw him play for vitesse on loan that season (as he'd pissed off his parent club) and looked pacy and clinical from what I'd seen,  amazing what he's gone on to do so I agree a great shout from the originator.

Also a shout out to myself and @SuperSAINT were raving about Ziyech on here a full season before we played twente in a friendly under Koeman saying we should sign him, original #ziyechwatch.

Unfortunately no one has ever asked us for more recommendations 🤣🤣

Would be fantastic but I cant see either committing to a club that might still be in the EFL next year. Both could pick up PL moves in the summer if they keep their form

Who Is going to buy Adams on the form of the last 12 months. I quite rate him over the time he’s been here but the last year he’s been pony

And why would he leave? Only a few months left on his contract and can go for free at the end of the season, so he’d have far more options without a transfer fee around his neck. Also don’t think the club will want rid of him, Rod Stewart out until god knows when and Sekou Mara is the second choice striker if Adams goes.

Transfer windows about to open so easy money on Che Adam’s to start banging goals in for fun. Hopefully the club have learned from the past 2 years of windows, and actually sell him on rather than build our hopes around him as a main striker for remainder of season.

Expect he might feel he’s outgrown a Championship side if the likes of Celtic can offer Champions League next season.( Although we might still offer more £).

On the other hand he was I believe a Darren Mowbray recruit so maybe there’s a good relationship with his agent,

Yeah that was me, i wish we'd signed him. Madness to think what we went on to spend money on as well... Sadly can't think of any other good ones that are attainable either atm - we're fishing in a different pond this season, and like it or not, championship clubs will struggle to get that tier of young talent from top Belgian / Dutch sides if they're already getting european footy 😕

I think we've signed Stewart for nearly twice what Openda went for... (and Openda was desperate to leave as well)... Let alone what we spent on Onuachu and Mara 🤣

FWIW, provided we don't get any more significant injuries, i think we've got enough to get promoted this year. So any sensible signings can only strengthen us. We'll be looking for players that can go into a prem side next season, which isn't easy (and won't be cheap) for a championship side that isn't certain of promotion.

If the club decide to cash in on Adams in January rather than risk losing him in the summer, here are three players we could look to reinvest the money on to strengthen other areas of the squad:

https://www.southamptonfc.news/opinion/three-players-southampton-could-spend-che-adams-transfer-fee-on/

If we lose Adams we definitely need a striker more than anything. Finishing off teams has been our biggest issue of late. Imagine selling Adams and then Armstrong getting injured? We'd have only Mara (if he even sticks around) and then Alcaraz playing out of position up there (I'm not including Stewart as it's left to be seen when he'll actually return).

Why would Che want to leave? 6 months left, can leave on a free and get much more options than having a club pay a fee.

Also, why would the club sell him? Stewart is out until February at best and we don’t have anyone else.

Its an issue that people seem to have made up in their heads.
