I know for many he’ll be known as Stumbledore (or whatever) in the Barry Trotter wizard films but for me he’ll always be the lucky git who got a greasy massage from Joanne Whalley in The Singing Detective.
Anyway, RIP, seemed like a decent bloke and played some decent roles.

It's a shame that news media obits are reporting him as "Harry Potter actor" or "best known for playing Dumbledore" when, as you say, his long and distinguished TV career includes The Singing Detective and his excellent portrayal of Maigret, amongst many others, on top of which he was a prominent member of the National Theatre.

Perhaps, for a certain group of petrol heads, he will actually be best remembered as having a corner on the Top Gear track named after him.

Great actor, one of my all time favourites Loved his little role in layer cake, especially when he said this to Daniel Craig's character:

"You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son".

Best know for Potter more recently but I laughed my tits off all the way through Ali G in da House. A distinguished career for a man who even had a corner named after him on Top Gear.

What a film that is, Sienna Millers finest hour as well. Great line that.

Yep, and very underrated... that scene in the cafe too. Brutal.
