If either of those had gotten across the line we'd never have heard of Onuachu/Sulemana/Orsic, and only possibly heard of BBD/Archer/Stewart after selling Gakpo or Ramos for big money (even then we probably would've aimed higher). There's not much wrong with the scouting, it's the final decision-makers who leave a lot to be desired. Those would be the players who ended up at Liverpool and PSG within a window of us declaring our interest? That Gakpo and Ramos? 1

Yep, and if you go back only slightly further you get Carrillo and Armstrong. Add on another £40m. At least AA did the business in the Champ even if hopeless in the PL.

I remember one game when we went down last time and most of the players on the bench had at one point been our record signing. You've got the likes of Sulemana, Vestergaard, Carillo & Elyanoussi who were all big money signings for us and you could tell immediately were absolutely shite. Then there were others like Hoedt, Lemina, ABK who had something about them but were bellends (ABK stuff is rumours) and only turned up when they felt like it. How many "big money" signings have we made that have actually worked out? They generally not even been half decent, they've been shite for one reason or another. 1

Agree with most of that, but Hoedt was dogshit because he is dogshit. Nothing to do with attitude.

Hoedt was one i wasn't sure which bucket to put him in. When he arrived he had been making the Dutch squad, he'd played six time that same year and was highly rated, it felt like we'd signed a decent player. But it quickly became apparent he was a bellend who thought he was way better than he was. I guess the proof is there that after leaving us he never really cut it anywhere and ended up in the championship, now in Saudi league. 3

Pure senility to think that he was worth £17m from Lazio’s fringe squad which is about £30-35m in todays money. Edit - didn’t know he’d gone to Saudi but explains why Watford are doing much better! Wesley never stays anywhere long before stinking the place out. Edited 27 December, 2024 by Gloucester Saint 1

The Gakpo that almost came to us or Leeds until Dutch national team coach Louis Van Gaal told him to stay in the Netherlands until after the World Cup, where he scored three goals and caught the eye of Liverpool. And the Ramos that almost came to us until Benfica qualified for the Champions League group stages, decided to keep him, and he too scored three goals at the World Cup. It's not unthinkable that such players can end up at Saints. In fact that's SR's whole goal; find (and sign) players who within a window or two are wanted at Liverpool and PSG. As I said the scouting team are pretty good at the finding, but whoever does the signing part leaves a lot to be desired. 1
St. Ciervo Posted 28 December, 2024 Posted 28 December, 2024 (edited) I wonder if Gakpo or Ramos would have hit such heights if they came here instead. Sulemana has been used incorrectly for his entire time here. He is pure speed, but we have been asking him to play with his back to the goal. I am sure we could have equally mismanaged either of those other 2 players. Edit: My post had nothing to do with RS... He could be managed by any one of us. Edited 28 December, 2024 by St. Ciervo 1

Lol, yup, Van Gaal told Gakpo he was already better than us and Leeds, and so it proved - quickly. Didn't he score a hattrick in the game when we were all waiting to see if he'd sign after full time? I've seen the Saints PR machine in action too many times to be taken in by those kinds of rumours. It'll be a long, long time before we're anywhere close to taking PSV or Benfica's best players off their hands.

Used incorrectly…..he has had so many opportunities and pure speed? Sorry apart from one end of season friendly what has he delivered? He has played wide not down the middle and not back to goal he gets the ball facing the defender and stops and never uses that speed by going past a defender. Sorry not having he has been used incorrectly at all. 1

Put it another way who apart from Livramento KWP Ramsdale and probably Lavia who turned out to be consistent genuine PL players in the last few years. Also what PL players has the academy produced recently I think the answers to my questions and the selection of managers will prove why we are in the shit 1

This is a kid that will go for cheap somewhere else and find joy. I hope sooner than later for all of us.
Weston Super Saint Posted 29 December, 2024 Posted 29 December, 2024 Apparently he had a nasty accident with some tinsel over Christmas and will be out for at least another 2 weeks. Get well soon.
trousers Posted 29 December, 2024 Posted 29 December, 2024 Appreciate I've asked this before but can't remember the answer (if any was forthcoming)... - What injury does Stewart currently have? - is his current injury related to his previous injury(s)?

My understanding was it’s a hamstring injury. Not uncommon for prior injuries to cause new ones due to weakness/adjustment etc. That being said, wasn’t his lengthy spell out last season (after his initial comeback from the long term Achilles) Hamstring related? I suspect there is a lot more to it and we’ll never find out the whole truth. Shame really, at the end of the hilarious jokes and club derision for money wasted, there’s a clearly talented footballer whose lost the best years of his career and may not play seriously again. 2
suewhistle Posted 29 December, 2024 Posted 29 December, 2024 At least I know he's not some figment of somebody's imagination as I actually saw him on Thursday, on his way to sit with the other unselected players in the Itchen stand. He's at least able to walk without a limp..
Pamplemousse Posted 29 December, 2024 Posted 29 December, 2024 He was actually doing OK before his injury. He could hold the ball up which is more than Tall Paul is able to achieve. 1
