Plymouth 1-2 Saints - FT

We made harder work of that than we should have done. Much better second half but we still need a creative midfielder who can turn all that effort into clear goal scoring chances. AA looks better in midfield than up front. Charles deserves a shout out, we won't hang onto him for long that's for sure. Defence looked a bit better but weren't really tested by a poor Plymouth attack.

RM not at all happy with the 1st half. Not good enough with the ball, played too slow with no intensity.

Proud of the 2nd half, very dominant but conceded a rubbish goal.

Had 3 or 4 players unsure of their future playing (KWP, Che, Tella and ?).

Rejected bid for Che, will be huge for us if we manage to keep him. Love to keep him, if we don't we'll replace him.

Downes still coming in, working on a few other things as well.

Having to win whilst building, unbeaten in 3 games and there's still so much to improve on. A lot of the players had a tough season last year, and to show the character to score these late goals is a huge shift in mentality.

Maybe some who accused those of us who called it how it was of being bed wetter etc will take more notice of RM's view.

I did think Charles looked decent and I thought Tella and Stu were decent but AA was my MOTM. Sheer work rate. I definitely see comparisons with Shane Long in the way he plays. Will be an important player for us this season in any attacking position that isn't the main striker.

Fantastic win today against a team full of confidence and great home record.  Yes, they should punish us more in the first half but this is why both teams are playing in the second tier - we don't have those great players.

Baz played well, Arma and Charles too.  The style still makes me worry on the transition which is not so good when we have a fragile back four.  Manning has some work to do. Che will leave sadly but Piroe might be a fine replacement. Edozie needs more end product, Tella ok. I'm hoping that Downes will some many of the problems in midfield but perhaps we need 1 more in there.

Great to have 7 points when we have so many players (Tella, ABK, Adams, Tall Paul, Sulemana) likely to still leave so good points tally during unsettling times. COYR!

One of the results you have to get if you’re going to go up, but fuck me some of our players are damn frustrating. Not convinced by Manning, Edozie & Armstrong in that role. Tells frustrating as well.

Adam Armstrong was Person of the match for me, found some little pockets of space, created chances and more importantly injects a bit of urgency. Brave for the winning goal as well.

Not been impressed with Manning so far. Especially as he seemed to be in demand from several clubs.

Anyone able to say if it should have been a penalty? We would be furious if we never got that?

well seemed a dive to me, Baz pulled his arms away and the forward moved his foot to make contact. At the game Id be fuming but after a watch back Id see it wasnt

One where the keeper stopped short of the player, and the player stuck a leg out and back, and dragged it to slightly brush the keeper and then went down himself as there wasn’t enough contact to bring him down.

Never a penalty but it could have fooled some refs probably on another day.

seems that we havent the worlds greatest set piece taker anymore and looked dangerous on a few corners. Brilliant by AdArm to make the header his instead of ball watching to get it to Che. Top work. Pleased that Baz came and punched the ball away a few times at the end. Positive. Aribo not on for long but was tidy on the ball ,and does look decent

A win, a late win but a win and so far a great start to the season. I hope unless we get a huge injury list this will be the weakest saints team we put out this season. You’d expect a couple on incomings next week and at least a couple more before deadline day. Just hope we keep Adams and Tella, they have game winning quality at this level.

Yep, without Tella and Chelé's goals we could potentially be sitting on zero points this season! So if they do go, we need equal quality coming in

It’s nice to score some goals! 9 in 3, 1/4 of what we scored all last season

We've also scored winners in the 87th and 94th minutes and an equaliser in the 97th minute in our three matches. I do like this added time refs are giving this year!

It's also showing our positive intent. Makes a big difference. We could easily have been staring at 2 points and not 7.

I presume that you mean the dive. No way a pen. Their player's first half attack on Edozie 's throat was more of a penalty.

And 2 wins - feels strange winning more games than we lose!  Much better feeling than we have had to put up with for several years now.  Championship is deffo more fun and first time in over 3 years we have won 2 on the bounce away from home.  Now we just need to pick up good from at home and could be a cracking season.

We've had a week of people on here going on about how amazing Plymouth are, their blistering home form, their momentum, their great manager, we'll lose 0-3 etc etc etc but now that we've beaten them they can go back to being "not one of the better sides".

exactly, I'm unsure how we coped with all their pace throughout the side.

How was the away atmosphere? Were they all sober as that Plymouth fan suggested? We've a strong away following and we should give ourselves a big pat on the back.

Plymouth played some good stuff, sure they'll stay up and maybe challenge late for playoffs?

a 2-1 win away from home with our "new look " side-what is there to complain about ?   Well let's not say " complain " but a few observations at least.

We did make hard work of it, and the thought that... IF we do sell Tella and/or Adams .... where will the goals come from?

Our only real big money purchase... Sean Charles ...was distinctly underwhelming, of course he will (hopefully) improve, but not on this showing.

Good job we had Stuart Armstrong in the start side, he held a lot together.

More discipline is needed ..already 15 yellow cards in the first 3 games, which will likely cause problems when they all total up in a month or so.

Makes you wonder where the pace is coming from if KWP goes too?.  Manning showed some good work, but is easily beaten for pace.

There are still 12 days before the window closes but expect a lot more signings before then, as the bench looked well short of real experience.

Can't say I watched much of them last season, so wasn't sure what to expect. Good to grind out a win like that though whoever its against.

Personally I thought, given his age and lack of experience Charles did really well. He was given man-of -the match so he must have been better than underwhelming 🙂

Yep it was a clear dive. I thought the referee was very decent today actually. KWP, Edozie and Tella all went down easily in the box and he got them all correct.

Really good second half after a dull first.

I thought Bazunu done well dealing sith the crosses into the box late on.

Shea Charles and Adam Armstrong were immense.

Che scores goals at this level, I hope we keep him. It could be a risk to lose our best striker with so little time remaining on the transfer window.

UTS.

Seems Manning is the new whipping boy ffs

Not sure whipping boy is what's going on.

Last week, his error directly lead to a goal and today he was poor. We can criticise player performances who we feel are not up to standard without it becoming a personalised issue

It’s always been silly on this forum over the years. Calling out players for poor performances somehow turns into whipping boy comments. As you said, we’re allowed to call it as we see it. Manning has cost us two goals in two games, so not surprising people are talking about it.

How did he cost us the goal he was on half way line !!

No mention of great corner for our winner I see.

He’s not a terrible player. Nobody hates him. Relax. But his two errors have directly contributed to two goals, and he didn’t have a great game today. He did put in a few good crosses you’re right. Again, chill, nobody wants him dead.

Glad the forum has found the whipping boy so early in season.

He isn’t as bad as some are making out for their goal he slipped yet where were centres covering?

Sky expert blamed KWP, not the centre halves. You’re having a pop at someone blaming Manning, by doing the exact same thing with different players.

How was slipping an error he didn’t do that on purpose? Again where were the other defenders

The ball came to near post isn’t that where centre halves are meant to cover?  Oh I never heard Sky blame KWP so unaware of that

I didn't say he cost us a goal today. Re-read my comment. I said his error directly cost us a goal last week.

Generally, today, he was poor, I felt. Cannot recover for the goal due to lack of pace (which for a fullback in a high line is an issue) and then stands off too much as the Plymouth winger hit the post, cutting inside him. As for the corner, you'd expect a left footed player to be able to swing a half-decent ball into the box. There are three touches before the goal from his corner so it's hardly a reflection of any quality on his part.

I'm just not convinced by him. That's all. Going forward, he fits RM's system. Defensively, he looks vulnerable, to me.

Agreed, Che could get 25+ in this league. Even if we replace him with quality it's hard to see another striker getting much more than Che will probably get anyway. For me we must try and keep Tella and AA, both are going to play a big role this season.

It's all about momentum now, 3 points is what we needed and that's what we got. Job done and on to the next game.
