Plymouth 1-2 Saints - FT

Good away win against a very competent side.

Still some work to be done at the back but Charles looks like a more than adequate Lavia replacement.

I just hope we hang on to walker peters and tella (would say the same for Adams but looks like a done deal).

Finally it's fun supporting Saints again!

The bed wetting on this forum at half time was classic Saints web. 😆 we still had another half to play and for people saying we're heading for midtable mediocrity all season. Wasn't pretty for most of the game but got the job done against a tough team that rarely lose at home. Solid performances from Charles, AA and Manning.

Give Adam Armstrong a Contract extension.

He was great today.   Assists for both goals; ran at the Plymouth defence, passed progressively and defended well including a last gasp clearance to preserve the 2-1 status.   Impressed to by Charles who grew into the game and held the midfield well.   Not at all sure about Manning - very slow moving, ponderous player who apart from a sound left foot has me wondering what qualities RM sees in him.

A great result and surely time to strengthen the squad to consolidate the strong start to life in the Championship.

I thought we showed a bit of grit that's been missing for 3-4 seasons. We were the better team today. Some poor defensive errors still but deserved the points.

Arma's been a revelation this season, workrate is incredible.

Big fan of AA as an 8, was brilliant today.

He did do well today. Looks far more confident, maybe just because this is his level but no shame in that. Hopefully he starts banging a few in (not just pens and deflections).

Take the three points with a more depleted midfield than the one that turned out last week considering we were missing Alcaraz and Smallbone also. Similar to Sheffield Wednesday as well in that Plymouth have a very good home record.

A. Armstrong my MotM, which I never thought I'd say. Two big roles in the goals, goalkeeper had to pull off a worldie save to stop his free kick and he made a crucial intervention at the end with two Plymouth players lining up to score.

Also, shout out to Bazunu, came out and got good hands to three balls at the end. Something I feel that's been missing from his game. Shea Charles was also good in the middle.

Another week until the next game, lets hope we're going into it with Adams and Tella. ;)

God knows what Mara was doing at the end. Again, don't think he'd have helped himself with Martin.

Don't underestimate how good a win that was. Not many sides will come to Plymouth and win this season, it was a battle and it wasn't easy.

First half was very tepid and slow I felt, second half the tempo rose from my sides - but I think it favoured us more as the game went on. Last 15 mins we pretty much penned them in, we went close a fair few times. Deserved win in my opinion.

I really enjoyed Charles performance, I thought he anchored that midfield like a seasoned pro - that was his first ever league start in his career, so impressive and mature for his age. Adam Armstrong was our bright spark in attack, popping up in space and driving with the ball - he's not the best technically, but you cannot deny that he's put in a right old shift at the start of this season.

CB's ball watching for the goal, Manning unlucky as he slipped, but he looks a bit limited to me.

7 points from 9 is more than I thought we'd get, two wins at two promoted sides as well - not to be sniffed at by any means. We're navigating these horribly choppy waters really well at the moment, big few weeks coming.

Mara frustrated me, everybody else tries to hold the ball and just pass it around, and Mara tries a nutmeg and takes a shitty shot so Plymouth gets the ball.

Symptomatic of some of the cock ups form our magnificent group of laptop nerds over the last few years.

Recruiting shite like that. Hope Martin gave him some shit for his cameo.

I thought Bazunu had a good game today, he was a bit scary at the start, but he commanded his box very well at the end there. Credit where it's due.

He conceded again.

Naa I’m kidding I thought he was really good again, I’m sure the Bazunu thread haters will come out moaning. 😂

One of the results you have to get if you’re going to go up, but fuck me some of our players are damn frustrating. Not convinced by Manning, Edozie & Armstrong in that role. Tells frustrating as well.

Adam Armstrong was Person of the match for me, found some little pockets of space, created chances and more importantly injects a bit of urgency. Brave for the winning goal as well.

You’ve got to win these scrappy early games to build momentum so take that all day long. Think some of our players started with a superiority complex today and we needed some leadership to take control - let’s hope we buy some in. Given that Martin made the point before that start of the season that we would be a disrupted side right until the window shuts we are in a great position - convincing win against a limited QPR at home next week and we will be solidly in promotion places. Charles and Armstrong (what a shift and showing immense heart) deserve a great deal of credit today, and it’s essential that we do our best to retain Che Adams.

Well I thought normal saints had resumed at one point scoring then conceding.

Great to have a goal at the end and let's hope the deal for Che falls through like the last.

He'll score for fun here and would arguable raise his profile more. Let's hope eh?

AA is coming into his own as well so fair play to him.

A few others in our transfer headlights so I hope we can strengthen.

Hate to say it but enjoying Saints again.

Even Che look nervous for his yard out goal (would a more confident striker have attacked that with his head?) But credit to him for keeping his composure, after fluffing a couple of similar chances within the game.

I hope he decides to stay and, as the chap on the telly said, 'light it up' in the Championship, as opposed to struggling for a low table prem team.

Like the guy lots. Hope he stays a saint.

Still not sure he is irreplaceable mind...

RM not at all happy with the 1st half. Not good enough with the ball, played too slow with no intensity.

Proud of the 2nd half, very dominant but conceded a rubbish goal.

Had 3 or 4 players unsure of their future playing (KWP, Che, Tella and ?).

Rejected bid for Che, will be huge for us if we manage to keep him. Love to keep him, if we don't we'll replace him.

Downes still coming in, working on a few other things as well.

Having to win whilst building, unbeaten in 3 games and there's still so much to improve on. A lot of the players had a tough season last year, and to show the character to score these late goals is a huge shift in mentality.

Let's hope that gives us a boost as we grow into the league, because we'll be punished by better sides, with respect.

We've had a week of people on here going on about how amazing Plymouth are, their blistering home form, their momentum, their great manager, we'll lose 0-3 etc etc etc but now that we've beaten them they can go back to being "not one of the better sides".

7 from 9 is Championship form, although very early days of course! Today like Sheff Weds was another potential banana skin avoided, would have been easy to lose against a promoted side with momentum in their favour so to get all 3 points is more than a decent result.

Goal aside Tella was very subdued again, and Adams should really consider whether moving to Everton is a good move for his career. We know how poor his Premier League return is, he’d do well to stay and earn hero status with a possible promotions.

Loved the tackle from Armstrong at the end, like the one he tracked back for against Norwich showed that there’s a lot more effort to his game than just trying to score.

Mara can get in the bin the silly prick, totally inviting unneeded pressure on us with his antics. Desperately need another striker before the window shuts.

Pretty much everything I wanted to say.

Couple of additions - Would like to have seen Doyle instead of Mara, and thought Bednarek was notably poor. As was Manning. Stephens had a good day.

Charles was obviously very good too but how he managed being on a yellow for so long in that position and with his inexperience was especially impressive.

Ultimately in the circumstances I’m delighted with the points.

Very sloppy first half and we pinned them back second.

The class of our players (in the main) showed through.

I think the slow play is a hangover from Selles.  It’s going to take a bit of time for Martin to coach that out of them.

Really liked Charles in midfield.  Not too sure about Edozie, think he needs to have a couple more Weetabix for breakfast.

Thought we were poor 1st half and Plymouth could have easily been leading at the break, had they had a decent final ball.

2nd half was much better, and thought we looked a threat, whilst Plymouth were also good.

Bit of a ding dong og a game. No idea if that should have been a penalty to them????

Thought Bazunu was decent, as was Adam Armstrong and the CBs. Thought Charles was excellent and he is a bit of a unit.

Edozie not for me....and Che MUST stay. He is our Mitrovic for this league. Simple as that

Its imperative we keep Che and Tella.

We're unlikely to. I expected them both gone before the end of July so amazed we've got some matches and goals out of them.

Tella, maybe, stays now because no one seems to value him that highly.

Che gone, no question.

100%. Like he mentioned, we're having to win whilst building and essentially coaching that negative mentality out of the players.

He's doing a fucking great job in my opinion. You look at the Gnonto/Sinisterra situations at Leeds and then watch Che and Tella win us the match.

To be fair we were very poor in the first half and you can only judge what you've seen. Second half we upped the tempo, were braver on the ball and ran out worthy winners. Hindsight is the easiest sight of all.

Good to ground out a narrow win but we will have to play much better than that against other sides and be a lot more clinical in front of goal... Still we can't keep a clean sheet..

A win is a win though so a good result

Ill write up a proper assessment later but for me;

- Adam Armstrong was excellent in that second half, stopped looking for the late run ‘as much’ and offered more passing options and we really benefited from it, works so hard too and all from an unfamiliar position

- Shea Charles, a few dodgy passes aside he was a HUGE presence in the middle of the park, and he needed to be… really impressive

- Bazunu, not much to do but did well with the things he needed, come and cleared danger late on, hopefully gives him confidence

- The back line still worries me.. all of them
