Joe Lumley

Looks like this one is a goer, so may as well start a thread.

Free agent after being released by Middlesbrough, spent last season on loan at Reading. Assuming he's come in to replace Willy, rather than compete with Baz.

A real shame as felt like it was a good opportunity to replace / get competition for Baz and push McCarthy down to 3rd choice (a bloody expensive 3rd choice, but we simply cannot play him next season), but it looks like we've managed to find someone worse than the pair of them.. fantastic stuff.

At some point I pray this club takes the GK position seriously.

Interesting as Russell Martin and Lumley have a bit of recent previous - love how our manager can be a feisty fucker but forgive afterwards, very zen 😀

This video shows he does have a bit of “it’s all about you, it’s all about you baby” syndrome. Love that just what we’ve been missing since Lord Jonesy sadly left us.

If you look online there is loads of previous with RM as a manager, sending offs and all sorts. When necessary lots of passion and he doesn’t take any shit - more Shaolin than Bhuddist. Like that about him.  🌶️😀

Lumley has been a starting player in the Championship for the last two season and won Reading's Players Player of the Season last year (low bar admittedly).

Ages 28 I don't see why anyone would go from being a #1 to a #3 in the same division, so surely he is being signed to actually make the match day squad and be the #2 keeper.

Its clear AMC isn't suited to the style and its utterly stupid to have one of your highest paid players as a backup goalkeeper, at alone a thirs choice.

Surely this means he will be leaving, even if its just a loan until his contract is up in the summer?

Perfectly fine to have one of Bycroft or McNamara as 3rd keeper as if ot gets to the stage where you actually need them to play any games then you can almost always find a more experienced free agent like we did with Caballero.

Bottom line - zero chance that Lumley or McCarthy are going to spend a season as a third choice GK in the Championship.

There is a blooper highlight reel, fucking hell! Perhaps he’s being brought in as a form of aversion therapy for Bazunu -

At times in these clips he looks shambolic. Easy to see why we might want him 🙂

Not one to promote violence, but the social media team have a golden chance to top the "Stu Taylor cup of tea" announcement video with a re-do of that altercation.

Can’t help but feel we’d be better off just keeping Lis, unless we think that Lis will be involved in first team in the future and giving him games at Goztepe. This bloke won’t play, unless we are absolutely desperate.

Didn't understand the Lis signing last year. Understand it less if we are loaning him out this year AND looking to bring a new Third choice keeper.

Yep. Very odd bit of business.

Find it an odd move unless we've found a suitor for Mccarthy. Why not just use Bycroft as 3rd choice?

He's (Bycroft) got a first team squad number. Not sure if that means anything. Maybe he will go out on loan.

Completely blind to decent keepers, Saints are. Depressing. Will mean we will be mid-table.

I am optimistic that we will be challenging, but not prioritising this position looks like a self inflicted injury.   In games when things are tight and we ship easy goals pressure will ramp up from both team-mates and the stands.  If the new Saints staff are convinced that Bazunu is their number one then so be it, but the insurance of experienced, solid competition would seem a relatively easy hire and settle a lot of nerves.

Absolutely this. And in a position which is one of the less expensive ones where big impacts can be made. It's no coincidence that our best periods have been when we have a good keeper, and decent CBs ahead of him. Seems so basic. Cannot quite believe we are so seemingly negligent in this area, and having McCarthy on the books still says everything you need to know about how poor either our coaches are in this position or those making the hires are at actually using their eyes.

That was only in December... Bit of a concern if Martin can lose his call that quickly as well. Will be tense moments this year like as not.

I doubt it S86.  I get the impression that despite the cool as a cucumber exterior Martin is a bit fiery, lots of blow ups with individuals last year at various matches.  Really like that in his make-up, a bit of passion and fire when it's justified.  With Lumley on the same side all will be forgiven I'm sure, mainly because he shouldn't be near the first 11 :)

Same might have been said about Jones, but it wasn't considered an admirable quality with him  as I recall.

Main difference with Martin being it appears to emerge now and again, when it needs to due to perceived on-field injustice. With Jones aggression seemed to be the mainstay and USP of his ‘personality’, amplified by being a 5ft 7ins 9 stone Welsh gobshite.

He's very unlikely to play unless there's some sort of injury crisis, and even then we'd probably find another free agent like Caballero kicking around to get on a short term contract.

He was a starting GK the last two years in the Championship so I doubt we would.

Certainly not the usual profile of a no3 keeper. I wouldn't be suprised if he is no2 by the 1st Sept and then the club have their options open for next summer with only Bazunu under contract.

From what I have read it sounds like Lumley is a good character (was Players Player of the Season at Reading last year) so seems a handy cover signing.

From someone who actually watched him last season:
