SotonianWill Posted 3 August, 2023 Share Posted 3 August, 2023 (edited) seek help but they should make stephens captain, much more of a leader than ward-prowse #Controversial Edited 3 August, 2023 by SotonianWill
Suhari Posted 3 August, 2023 Share Posted 3 August, 2023 There is some sense to JS being made captain. It wouldn't surprise me.

Bednarek was my punt last season, and I think he'll be decent. I just think it shines through that Martin is a bright player, and very much knows the Martin way. If not the captain, he'll be good for us. In fact, there'll be a few leaders in that back 4 this season which will help.

Fabrice29 Posted 4 August, 2023 Share Posted 4 August, 2023 Picking a player as captain who you know you will want to replace in a years time (maximum) feels silly.

sadoldgit Posted 4 August, 2023 Share Posted 4 August, 2023 I wouldn’t even start Stephens let alone make him skipper. For a tall guy and a CH he is very poor in the air and his tendency to lose it when a captain should have a cool head and level of maturity about him should rule him out. 4 3

Fabrice Fernandes no.1 fan Posted 4 August, 2023 Share Posted 4 August, 2023 I do remember hearing Stephens was JWP's right-hand man a couple of seasons ago and dealt with player fines etc so seems a natural successor

He's a real organiser, and is a very good player with it.

We need a core of 4 or 5 of them throughout the team!
Smirking_Saint Posted 4 August, 2023 Share Posted 4 August, 2023 Of the players currently at the club Id be inclined to pick Bednerak over Stephens but can understand why RM would pivot to JS Veteran player, loyal, vocal The issue for me is I don’t think he is particularly good, atleast on previous showings, and so the most replaceable of our back line
CylonKing Posted 4 August, 2023 Share Posted 4 August, 2023 Personally, think JS would make a great Saints captain. Being vocal and passionate about the club is something we've missed on the pitch. Plus, telling Vardy to get up after diving in the 1-2 win at theirs, taking the piss out of the other Leicester player with his fingers in his ears and his putting right of Moaning Myrtle Fernandes is the stuff I want from a captain. 😁 Not being the best player on the pitch shouldn't preclude you from being captain.
64saint Posted 5 August, 2023 Share Posted 5 August, 2023 (edited) So RM announces that Jack Stephens will be captain if JWP isn't playing. He doesn't actually say .....when JWP goes though. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/23703313.amp/ Edited 5 August, 2023 by 64saint

Chez Posted 8 August, 2023 Share Posted 8 August, 2023 Funny how when we win no one remarks on how poor JWPs captaincy was/is. Basically, it matters little who is the on field captain these days IMO as the manager is nigh on the pitch directing traffic. What's more important is how senior players behave on a daily basis. Edmonton Saint Posted 11 August, 2023 Share Posted 11 August, 2023 Ridiculous. Stephens has been a liability for pretty much all of his career with us . Not only did we extend his contract, we’ve now made him captain. Big part of our decline . Seems we are Doomed to repeat the failures of the past. david in sweden Posted 12 August, 2023 Share Posted 12 August, 2023 and so finally .... Jack's the Lad. The last survivor of " Prowsey's generation " which also included; Shaw, Targett, Reed, Chambers, and McQueen amongst others. Those who criticised JWP for not shouting at his team mates will be in for a treat, as Jack has never been last in the queue to express an opinion. To be fair, he had a baptism of fire after Saints prematurely sold Jose Fonte, only for VvD to be badly injured only weeks afterwards, and Jack was drafted in alongside Maya Yoshida.... (who was the only other experienced CB at the time) ...but he DAJFU for a while, but took some unfair criticism for faults that were not always his. Now at last, he has the chance to prove himself in the key role in the team. Never a stranger to a referee's yellow card, he always showed courage and determination that some others around him sadly lacked. I ...for one ...will say Good Luck ... Captain Jack !
