Beginning a thread for SAA (which isn't transfer related from last summer) given he'll likely break through this season, and has been probably our best player in pre-season. What a brilliant talent he's looking, and for less than £1m. Got 8 goals and 5 assists last season in u21 football so end product might not yet be there, but struggle to see how any of our other wingers can keep him out.

He's a better Edozie. That clever pass he made to smallbone is something that you expect from an experienced player, not some 17 year old. Think what he could do this season if Martin plays him right!

I saw him in a few B team games last season, definitely a talent but a lot to learn still. Often guilty of not releasing the ball quickly enough, also knocked off the ball by more physical players but he'll get smarter in time. Doesn't offer much defensively in winning the ball back so need to allow for that in team selection.

Bit of a dilemma for the Club, do they keep him in the first team squad mostly on the bench or give him another year in the B Team to sharpen his skills with regular football.

I'd go for the latter personally, he has a lot to learn yet.

Bit of both.

Agree. Give him some game time for the first team to see how he acquits himself.  He looks quality and that was a superb pass he played yesterday to set up Smallbone. We are sorely lacking in creativity so maybe he can help.

Surprised no one has come out with the "enjoy him while you can" statement yet because it seems to be a requirement on here for any player who looks a good prospect.

He's a perfect player to bring off the bench, looks a very talented guy. Quick feet, good pace, full of tricks - seems to already have more of an end product than Edozie.

He played the whole game at Gillingham, and I was amazed that he was still able to maintain that pace and intensity right into injury time. He seems to have great energy and attitude as well as an overflowing bag full of tricks and pace to spare.

Contrast his sub performance today with Mara, and consider that Sam is still only 17. Love watching him 😁

This boy is going to develop into some player. Such confidence and he's a real box of tricks. I'd have no worries about starting him but probably better coming off the bench at the moment. He won't be with us for the long haul but I'm sure, when he moves on to bigger things, we'll get a massive transfer fee for him. Love watching him.

17 years old. Wow. He's going to be a star. Feel like his time is being managed well, too.

In praising him, I don't feel the need to condemn Edozie in the same breath. Edozie had a few good moments today, too.

Yes and when we say 17 his birthday was very recently so 16 and a few days. Frightening prospect.

Completely agree.

With regards to Edozie he is much more of a frightening winger than Tella is, If he gains the same finishing confidence Tella got at Burnley we will be raving about him until he gets sold for 50+ Million.

Thought he was brilliant tonight. Reminds me of a younger Saka. Looks very settled playing Russ ball. Deserves his own thread. What we nicknaming him?

Posted

Superb. Link up play was excellent. Always in space and kept the ball well, but even more pleasing was his cutting edge in the final third. In the right place at the right time and he just makes things happen.

ALready miles better than Edozie who really looks clueless once he's done his step overs.

For me, him and Dibling start on Saturday.  No fear from them, direct and some of Dibling's mazy runs were a thing of beauty.

Excellent game for him. I was hoping to see a lot more of him last season.

I felt as Cardiff changed it round that he faded a bit second half.

Edozie's all round game is more developed. I think we'll see a fair bit of him this season. SAA's output is a strong point though.

Put Edozie to shame for me. Does things when he gets the ball, makes things happen.

Edozie just kills the game when he gets it.

Really big fan of SAA - good pickup by Joe Shields in his short time here.

I think SAA has a far more developed game than Edozie. He's better at beating his man, finishes better and has far more of an end product. Edozie struggled tonight against a Cardiff reserve full back who he should have had on toast.

Very disappointing to read that he hasnt been regularly training with the first team because we have too many players.

https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/24850154.southamptons-sam-amo-ameyaw-responds-loan-suggestion/

Can see him leaving in the summer as must be fed up with seemingly a lack of a coherent club plan for him.

Exact same situation as Meghoma. Very talented young player who Martin did almost everything to ignore, signed extra players who are no better in the same position (in this case see Fraser and Cornet) and ends up wasting the talent. Could’ve seen SAA having a similar impact as Dibling, but imagine he’ll leave now.

Do you not think that Duric will cast an eye over all the youngsters and put them through their paces before any of them leave?

Expect to see him given a chance before the end of this lost season when there is nothing more to play for.

How about Meghoma and SAA were/are 17 and 18 and maybe the idea of them being ignored because they weren’t/aren’t playing every week is a bit absurd? Meghoma currently restricted to EFL cup games for Brentford right now, is he being ignored or is he taking a perfectly normal path for a young player? Kids of this age getting regular football in the Championship or PL are exceptions, and just because these two have been highlighted for a little while now doesn’t mean they should be treated exceptionally. The clubs relegation two seasons ago really set everyone back because we’ve now had to have two seasons of purely focusing on the immediate, these two and Ballard etc maybe the victims of that slightly but they are hardly being treated terribly for kids of their age.

You would think that there's a glimmer of hope for SAA now that we have a manger who values attacking players who take risks and take people on?

Where’s that evidence then compared to the previous manager?

For me his treatment has been the biggest crime this season unless there is something going on in the background we don't know about. He has always seemed to be the most promising of our youngsters and yet Martin snubbed him repeatedly. I don't get it. He had a good game vs Cardiff in the League Cup and then was sent into exile.

Not just training elsewhere, but very often training on his own ...

Another top talent we'll lose no doubt due to piss-poor recruitment

I think juric has already said he should go out on loan to get game time.

I really feel he should have been given more of a chance here this season.  As it is, maybe a loan will do him good

Considering he’s of a similar physical make up to Adam Armstrong, last year’s Championship top scorer, who every time he plays in the PL looks absolutely dwarfed and out of his depth, can you think of a reason why an 18 year old might not have the physical game for the PL just yet and that a league cup game against Cardiff probably isn’t proof to the contrary? I’m intrigued to know if there’s any other 18 year olds like like SAA getting regular game time in the league?

They can both be influential players next season in the Championship.

I actually agree with you on this. Having talent isn't enough in the premier league. it's a completely different game physically, players are much fitter, stronger. There is a reason why not many players dont become first team players until their 20s and it's because like young Sam they aren't physically ready for it yet. You can get away with it more in the championship. You've only got to look at our own club. Dibbing and Shaw are the only two teenage players who really made a break thorough in the last 10 years or so and both of them are already built like men. Dibbing is physically very strong already with an impressive physique and strength, i heard Shaw was bench pressing 120kg when first joined Man United, insane strength for a footballer. Some will point to JWP who made his debut at 17 but he didn't become a first team regular until his early 20s he was in and out of the side until then. Throw them in too early and you're setting them up to fail. If you want to see how strong a premier league footballer needs to be look at my comment on the lack of fitness thread after i listened to a Chelsea academy S&C coach talk about it. It's quite staggering what sort of weights they are doing.

Very true. Josh Sims  was one who looked amazing in his first couple of games, until players learnt to lean into him and ease him in to touch.

SAA has much more natural talent than Sims though.

I'd say Meghoma looked very assured the couple of games he actually did play last year, especially when it was at times when Manning was struggling. Amo-Ameyaw has always looked dangerous and skillful when he's played and will make things happen. Should've made some more appearances both this season and last at least off the bench to help him develop. Hopefully any loan move sees him get some good experience at a decent level, as think he could be a big player for us next season.

He played once in the cup I think and was 17. Manning was in the team of the season for the Championship the season prior. Lets not rewrite history that it was a straight choice between the two at any stage for a season in which we simply needed to be promoted. SAA looked decent when he came off the bench at the start of season when we were in heavy possession and he could concentrate on what he is good at. He started against QPR (I think) and was evidently swamped by the other aspects of the game and pressure of starting, which is perfectly reasonable but it does put into context where he was at last season and the qualities he could bring to the team. I repeat, they are both 18 now and their exposure to first team football is perfectly reasonably for kids their age, they have not been mistreated by the club or it's managers, other than a club being relegated, needing promotion immediately and then attempting to stay up is not a particularly great environment for young players in general (probably why Meghoma fancied the move tbh because it certainly isn't to be guaranteed much more first team football).
