What a strange club Chelsea have become. Outside of FFP restrictions, money is seemingly no object, they have an amazing recent history and could easily pay for the elite managers’ available.

yet, here they are.

At a much smaller-scale, we were kind of the same back in 2022. Spent £100m on players, some of the brightest talents around, got the most sought after talent spotter in Joe Shields, appointed a very respected/highly rated assistant coach in Selles.....yet in the same breath appointed Nathan Jones as our manager.

There are green shoots of recovery at United. Mainoo coming through it a big plus for them. Garnacho, Hojlund, Fernandes, Mainoo, Rashford (when on form), Diallo - if they can sort their defence out they could go back to challenging at the top again. I have no strong feeling for either of these teams really - City beating Liverpool to the League repeatedly pleases me a bit, and I used to follow United back in the 90s in the Champions League back when it was on ITV, but that's it. With Chelsea finding their stride too, the Premier League will be a tough league next year methinks. I'd still rather be there than not.

FT: City 1-2 United

Ten Hag wins the FA Cup, Newcastle lose their Europa spot to United and Chelsea drop from Europa to Conference League.

Well done Jason Wilcox 👍👍👍

Yes of course, two Wilcox inspired wins at Wembley on the same weekend. The man simply has the Midas touch

Having just beaten one of the best possession teams around, it'll be interesting to see Wilcox chuck all that to become a pale imitation of the beaten team's philosophy.

When you say, “chuck all that,” all of what, exactly? Man Utd have been steadily declining towards absolute dog sh*t, both in ETH’s tenure and in the years before that. They have been hopelessly underperforming relative to what they’ve spent and half their players can’t be arsed. There’s not much use in putting in one glory performance in a cup final against City, when you’re not interested in beating Bournemouth and Wolves the rest of the year.

The glaringly obvious reason for their improvement is the return of Martinez to their defence. He makes a massive difference to them.

Today, they had a well drilled game plan that nullified Haaland and, just as importantly, his supply. In addition, they were compact enough to deal with not having the ball, while looking to spring forward when needed.

Their manager feels they over achieved last season, while dealing with injuries in this. From what I've seen of them they have a number of players they can't wait to get shot of. Not many of those made the side today.

If they switch yet again, there will be more transition both in learning the new system and in personnel. All while trying to shadow teams years ahead of them, who will have evolved by the time they get close to the first system they're trying to copy.

Wonder which team next season will be the first to follow Dortmunds crossing of the half way line as the teams line up seconds before the kick off to salute their supporters.  Imagine an away team doing that at St Mary's seconds before kick off.

Wonder which team used the Wealdstone FC’s fanzone and parking?

If it’s Dortmund then I hope they do the right thing and invite Wealdstone to a pre-season friendly.

Just so the Raider can stand in front of their famous yellow wall end and tell them “ you’ve got a shit ground, and you’ve got no fans “ ( in English or German)

Didn’t see it, but didn’t Leeds start something similar in the early 1970’s under Don Revie ?

Thankfully it didn’t catch on for about 40 years.

Dortmund's support is excellent because it is naturally passionate but also so, so organised. Colours, flares, flags, chants, seating. They synchronise everything so well and it looks extremely effective as a result.

Look to the sides and wings and you'll see the classic modern football fans on their phones, observing in silence.

Love them or hate them they always find a way to win. A class club, Ancellotti  up there with the best of all time too still can’t believe he was at Everton fairly recently!

Ancellotti is class, with an incredible record.

Can't stand Real Madrid though.

Atmosphere nowhere near what it was on Sunday.

Just saying

Tbf the TV sound tonight has been utterly dreadful. When the teams walked out at the start it was almost silent on TV but you could see the fans going mad. Really strange what they’ve done.

I don’t mind them. One of those clubs that attracts all the plastics but for any club to stay at the top for so long however big is pretty special. What’s they now their 15th European cup/champions league? Incredible success

They are the driving force behind the proposed breakaway super league for the filthy rich clubs in Europe to get even richer. The top EU court also found them guilty of receiving illegal state aid.

Is it fair to say Ancelotti is the best manager in the world? I think so.

Quote

"I don’t believe in ideologies like Guardiolismo, Sarrismo... I believe in the identity of the team. A clever coach is one who adapts the game to the characteristics of his players.“

How the fuck are they allowed those in?

Old bill poured my can of beer and threatened to nick anyone in sight for a couple of smoke bombs 🤣 meanwhile Dortmund have got more firepower than Benjamin Netanyahu

Didn’t they have €200m of debt and sold their training ground worth about €30m at the time to the king of Spain, who was a Real fan for €200m? I remember something along those lines anyway
