I agree and it will be very difficult. Personally I think we're nailed on for playoffs. But it's still possible even if we don't win today. I would be amazed if Ipswich maintain close to that ppg ratio, and if they do we ain't catching them regardless.

I’d rather go up in the play offs anyway. I think over two games Leeds would beat us but I’d be confident of beating any of the others.

Constantly surprised by how dismissive people are of Ipswich on here considering they're doing exactly what we did in 2011/12.

Agree in principle but tbf I don't think we were competing with any squads that could be considered as strong as ours, Leicester's & Leeds'.  West Ham were the strongest on paper that season from memory

Well we’ve got to close a 10 or 13 point Gap on teams averaging 2.36 and 2.26 points a game, plus over take Leeds plus we’ve got a worse goal difference so in reality it’s 11 points. With 23 games left we need to average about 0.5 of a point per game more than them. There isn’t much margin for error

Agree we need to go on an amazing run over the next 24 games. Can probably only afford to lose 2 or 3. But if we do catch Ipswich on points, it likely follows that we will also catch them on goal difference.

We won't win the League, but 2nd place is very much still on. Ipswich have Leicester next and again early in the New Year, it just needs Leicester to do the double. If we can keep pace with Leeds then probably both will overtake Ipswich. Ipswich have now conceded more than us this season. Of course everything depends on us and especially today, but automatic promotion is only a done deal for one team, Leicester.

Between game 20 and 23 ...

Leicester from 2.45 to 2.52 pts per game and ourselves from 1.90 to 1.96 per game have improved.

Ipswich 2.4 to 2.26, Leeds 2.05 to 1.96 and WBA 1.60 to 1.57 all a little worse.

Ipswich's form would still have to plummet from that 2.26 to 1.61 per game to not hit 89 points (average 2nd place promotion tally form last 10 years). It's the sort of form WBA have put together so far to be a strong playoff contender, but would be quite a drop from Ipswich's current first half of the season. Still, injuries, squad depth etc could make things a lot closer (hopefully)

We're now with Leeds needing 1.91 to hit that 89 point mark, so we're both getting over that now.

Lots of credit for such a long, unbeaten run and the improvements. But the above shows that, to get automatic promotion :-
- This will have to be maintained and hope Ipswich drop away.
- We'll have to use this run as a springboard to becoem even more ruthless. Something we definitely have the potential to do. Whether that's the players we have becoming more clinical, that part of the system clicking more, or bringing in new faces (with S's spectacular January or striker recruitment to consider, and time for new players to bed in)

We' ve got our own injuries and suspensions and busy schedule. But that's the standard for this season. A standard we have to be able to keep to, if not improve. Lots of mental strength and stamina requied to keep this going.

We're certainly more organised defensively, even if we sometimes ahve to race back. Great for keeping one goal leads. Getting scorelines out of sight, is where we'll really stop lots of hard work being wasted sometimes.

Ten Hag's tenure slipping away into oblivion.

Watching them slip way is about the only interest I have in watching the highlights later. As much for the media circus around them. That and watching MartinBall+ with Man City.

A win on Boxing Day and I think we actually hit 2 points a game for the season for the first time since the early days of August.

Leeds have a tough lunchtime away trip so a win for us and we could very well be third before the top-2 clash in the evening.

Or Russell's old club turn up and spoil everything.

It's surely written in the runes that Russ's previous club will be the one that breaks our unbeaten run...

Obviously the Luton captain suffered a horrible incident, but you could have been mistaken that he dropped dead with the goings on at “The Kenny”

Can't have been that bad, surely.

I watched some of Swansea's win v Preston on Friday night, they didn't look bad, controlled the game and had a lot of possession, clearly still using the Russball model. Interesting contest for boxing day.

Was funny when he scored a hat trick of tap ins a while back and people got overexcited about him.

Yeah, totally agree Whelk. Looked awful. I thought Broja didn't look much better either. Lavia finally made it to the Chelsea bench, but I don't think he came on.  I've said it before on here, just loan him back to us for the remainder of the season. They are apparently looking to off load some of their midfield so it would make a good fit if he is fit again .....and it wouldn't be to one of their competitors.

£58m signings don’t go on loan to the Championship, even if you chop one if their legs off. He will 90% likely stay at Chelsea and ease his way into the side there, the 10% being a loan to a lower mid table team.

Leeds keeper sent off with 35 minutes to go, violent conduct so should be a 3 game ban. Stupid boy but bad for us giving Leeds the advantage of playing with 10 now

Makes me laugh seeing that called violent conduct.

Edit: how was it not a penalty to Preston as well?

Big opportunity today if this stays the same.

Trouble is, I don't feel right wanting Leicester to beat Ipswich because i'm not really that interested in going up in 2nd place. Either win something, give us the victory day out at Wembley or stay down here.

Wood scores second for Forest,  we heard the cheers thinking Newcastle had scored ! Didn't Wood get linked with Saints a while back ?

He's now got a hattrick, he only scored four goals for Newcastle in his time there.

And yes he was linked with us, would have been a brilliant signing. Similar to Pelle but with more aerial dominance and a worse touch.

I'd rather the Leicester game was a draw, assuming we win. Leicester will have a bump at some point so we need to think of catching them also, as unlikely as it might be.

Never get it when the 'tator says 'that clip was enough to earn that penalty'

it is either a foul or it isn't...that was not a foul

Contact is not a foul, but somehow over time it seems to be. At least they’ve stopped the “entitled to go down” bollocks they spouted a couple of seasons ago

The excuse about Newcastle being too tired because of injuries etc was used to explain away all the poor performances and has finally run out. Hilarious that such a poor striker as Wood scored a hat trick too 😆

Good finish for Leicester there!

Hirst injured for Ipswich just before, looked a nasty one, went down with what looked a hamstring injury, got some treatment, probably would have been dragged off in a less important match, and then seemed to finish it off with his first few steps coming back on.
