991 minus 477 equals 514.

So how can 477 be a record when we must have made 514 passes in the second half? 🤔

Got it now.

Completed passes!

First game of the season, at Hillsborough, against a newly promoted team, full of big, experienced players, that sit deep, barely press and try to squeak out a win... We all thought this would be a tough game, so well done to the team for getting through it and getting the 3 points. Wednesday aren't a good team at the moment, but I'm certain they will cause some big upsets there this season.

The corner is a shame. Personally why I want Charles to be in the team sooner rather than later (essentially an extra CB).

Otherwise, completely dominant. The movement in and around the opposition penalty box needs to be worked on. Far too often we didn't have enough numbers forward and no passing options. The patterns that were obvious against Reading have seemingly disappeared.

If we got a left-footed goalscorer to play on the RW (Piroe, Amad Diallo?), so that Tella could play LW cutting-in, then I think that is basically a complete team. I understand the clamour for replacements of Armstrong and Che, but I doubt we will get a better striker in.

Really good start. I was worried about that game. We will get better in the months ahead. I'm sure the matches will be a better watch overall when teams start trying to take the game to us a bit more, rather than hoping for a set-piece.

Delighted with the way the players saw out the win once ahead. That is a big advantage with this style that we just didn't have under Ralph. I doubt we will be leading the league in most points dropped from winning positions this season.

Some lovely Wednesday (and Forest) fans gave me a lift back to my lodgings tonight. Christ, thank goodness it's hilly here and they were at least an hour away! Some lovely pubs, a lovely restaurant and a win. I shall be very welcoming to any Wednesday fans for the return match.

Anybody at the game like me think Tella scored the first? Total surprise when I read the match report and it's Armstrong!

I thought that watching it on TV...but it got a slight, and possibly decisive, deflection off Armstrong's shoulder.

Completely uncharted territory. Almost felt as though we were trespassing.

Very happy with that - clear intent and fantastic execution. Of course there are worries - Jwp / KWP / Alcaraz / Adams made a huge difference - will they be here come Sep ?. Also that team us far too small for any long ball merchants - we look incredibly weak at corners.
But let’s enjoy it whilst it lasts - statement win and a really enjoyable watch.

That stat is one of those things that we look back on at the end of the season and say we knew from the start it was going to be a good year.

Fair play to JWP for playing like that even though he will probably leave. Legend

He played well - you could say the same about KWP.   In the first half particularly he looked on a different level to the other 21 players.    Playing that narrower wing back/attacking midfield role suited him and complemented Alacaraz, Edozie and Tella.      No coincidence to see KWP and JWP create the winner for Adams.      Will they still be here in September?

He is too good for this level - but that's why I want him to stay. If no club deem him worth the money, he isn't going to have much of a choice unless he hands in a transfer request and I just don't see him being the sort of person that would do that. We'll see. Even if it's not West Ham I do think that game would have but him on some radars elsewhere.

I also want KWP and Tella to stay but I'm not getting my hopes up. You can see which players are a class above even just after one game. Also Alcaraz didn't look too happy coming off last night - but I'm hoping that was just down to the injury he sustained.

Excruciating game to watch. Even the pundits said the style is set to aggravate the opposing team. Well it worked. Massive possession at a snails pace meant a very ponderous attack, having to beat 11 players around their box.

If this is what they're aiming for then we will not be coming straight back up again. Wednesday were awful yet still posed a threat once we lost possession.

Result was positive but that was it. Meaningless passing for the sake of it.

Either there is no pleasing some Saints fans or this is a wind up. Last night was the best we've played in years.

Propoganda football as Stachan would say. Wednesday were awful lets face it. Possession is meaningless unless you create chances. Edozie was the only positive threat  although he lacks an end product and was too easily knocked off the boil. Stuart Armstrong looked a real threat when he came on as he runs at defenders and was prepared to shoot from distance. With our high line we will be vulnerable to fast breaks and ourcentre halves will get exposed. Despite this the gulf in class and quality was obvious and this is a good start as winning breeds confidence.

You do know that if we have the ball they can’t score?

What you suggesting hoof it to Adam Armstrong?

Best ? As in heaps of nothing football with zero end product? Tippy Tapping bollocks until we run out of space , ideas or lose the ball. It's easy to play this way if the other team let's you. We will lose more than we win with this style. Don't forget we will lose our best players, our team isn't getting stronger, it's getting weaker.

If Martin produced Porn we would barely get her shirt buttons undone in 90 minutes.

The first 30 mins just blew Sheff Weds away (who I think are really going to struggle this year).

Some sublime passing, but offered little threat for much of the game. That HAS to improve.

However, that showing, after just 5 weeks, demonstrates even more what a terrible job Nathan Jones did with his own 'pre season' - feck me!

How long will it last for dishing out yellow cards like that? Good idea, but will drift away (as per) as the season progresses.

‘If we’ve got the ball they can’t score’. Well that’s worked brilliantly the last few seasons! The point is that possession is only part of the battle. We also need product from periods of possession. Currently we are painfully open to swift counter attacks from even poor teams.

I tend to agree. Other than the goal which was a lovely piece of individual skill, we’ve not really created many clear cut chances. The passing is easy on the eye but the opposition have plenty of time to organise.

It’s work in progress if you think Martins football is the same as last few years you are watching different team to me pre-season and last night.

I dont know if that is fair to call the game excruciating. I never felt that Wednesday was going to score. There were 2 moments of unnerve and 1 goal that was a fluke falling to the feet of a number 9. That wont happen often. It was far more comfortable than the scoreline showed.

We obviously need that finishing touch. Che was far stronger in that role over AA. Hopefully he stays.

It will depend on what forward we bring in if we lose Adams (which is likely), we aint scoring the goals to go up otherwise

Does seem very odd that it has been credited to Armstrong. Surely, it it touched him, it should only be classed as a deflection given that I'm pretty sure Tella's shot was on target.

If it really was AA's goal, then I am intrigued to know if Tella gets credited with the 'official' assist and, far more importantly, whether it can be classified as a successful pass. From what I can see, it doesn't appear on the pass map above for some reason (i.e. assuming there should be another gold star to denote a goal?).

It’s going to be a roller coaster until window shuts.

One of the main reasons we were relegated was shocking recruitment. So far Shea looks Ok Manning good I like him but then Lumley ?
Mowbray has a good record on recruitment so giving us benefit of doubt until 1st September but we will lose a few of best ones we need to get better at signing new players. Recruit for first team starters not the squad

Agree that sorting the forward out is key, was the main concern for me along with the CB position (where I don't think we can have Bedders and Stephens, we need one of them alongside a more physical defender or we will get bullied at set pieces). If we lose Adams we need to get someone like Piroe or Ross Stewart who know where the net is at this level. As much as I admire his effort Adam Armstrong is not the answer.

Good morning folks. Lets just all enjoy being top of the league for a few hours and continue with the incessant moaning at a later date.

One man’s moan is another man’s constructive criticism. I was there last night and I saw plenty of positives. We now have a style of playing, an identity which the players seem to have bought into. There was a lot of attractive passing and possession but once we got near their goal it fizzled out in an anti climax of poor final balls or not enough options in the area. So lots of work to be done. When the board went up with 9 minutes on it my heart sunk. This is going to be painful I thought. But we held on to the ball the whole 9 minutes so that meaningless possession was quite useful. It must have been incredibly frustrating for the home fans.
One final comment. It was nice to see Russell Martin came out about 10 to 8 before the teams emerged, and come over to applaud the fans before going back to the dressing room. He seems very savvy when it comes to getting the fans onside.
I was and remain dubious about tippy tappy possession football and playing out from the back but I am going to keep an open mind. It worked last night.
Now going home via Birmingham to take in Solihull v Eastleigh in the rain.

The top tier holds over 4,000 but new safety restrictions mean they're only allowed to sell 2,400 so plenty of empty seats above. Still over 3,000 up there, great turnout.

Very good performance, that's a Tella goal for me, hopefully wants to hang around. To wind up Burnley maybe we could get a little Specials chant going

"Freeee-eeeeee, free Nathan Tella"

Some of the passing we played last night was really something to watch. It was played at a high tempo we aren’t used to either. Wednesday couldn’t get near the ball. Also good to see some pressing when we lost the ball.

Clearly we lacked a bit of presence up front but it is obvious we will have a new CF playing that role.

I think we are in for a very enjoyable season lads.

People saying we will struggle to create against better teams, I think better teams will leave us more spaces to attack. Wednesday were low block counter last night, pretty much every man behind the ball, all styles of football can be frustrated playing against such a defensive team.

We are still so early on in our journey with this new style. I saw a lot of control, so much composure playing out from the back and just a lot of nearly moments in the final third, which will likely improve with each game. We looked like a PL team playing a L1 team last night, don’t think I’ve ever seen us dominate/control a game like that. It would have been very hard to take had we not scored that late winner.

What a way to manage the injury time. Much less stressful, although I somehow still harboured an expectation we would give a chance away, it’s just what we normally do - see Leicester at home last season as an example.
