I agree, give Caballero an opportunity as we need a bit of added experience. Give Gavin a rest.

He had his ups and downs today, he's not premiere league quality, but then again that could be leveled at quite a few of our starting 11.

bazunu had a good game today and that shows you his level. fucking useless get rid please. why sign a league one goalkeeper who’s only people saying he’s any good is portsmouth fans and irish fans.

Of all the mistakes SR have made, signing Bazunu as our number one is easily the biggest imo.

After several years of being stuck with McCarthy and Forster we had a golden chance to fix the goalkeeping position in the summer and somehow the club have managed to make it even worse. What we desperately needed was a confident, commanding GK with a bit of presence and experience, instead what we got was a 20 year old bag of nerves who has never played higher than League 1. This was the one position we really couldn't afford to gamble on youth.

People talk about his potential but to be brutally honest I don't even see that. He constantly flaps at crosses, barely makes a save that isn't straight at him and inspires no confidence at all. Just another Angus Gunn, if anything he's worse. If we're not going to sign another keeper then I'd rather we played Caballero. That alone shows how much we've fucked up this key position.

One of the problems as I see it is that the fashionable types who eulogise the 'modern game' want a goalkeeper who is 'good with his feet' as the must have accessory.

GK with the ball at their feet frighten me, it a fuck up waiting to happen. I've said this for several years, and the Boruc (Arsenal), Gunn (Huddersfield), and I think McCarthy passing out in one game (might have been Arsenal at home during lock down) support this.

Great if the GK can deal with the ball on the ground, but first of all they should be competent with their hands. Something the Rasmus brigade overlook it seems.

I was wary of Cabellero going in but actually thinking about it out defence has restricted the opposition to relatively few shots on targets in the last few games, so maybe you're right that getting him in to organise the back line further will make up for his lack of agility.

I feel like with this goal and the goal against Everton last week, he just like flies/lunges to the side, doesn't estimate it at all properly..

both balls seemed to fly by over his head, as his arms were outstretched to the side.

frustratingly blockable.

He has to be dropped. If he isn't soon, he'll be ruined as he must be desperately low on confidence, which is the very foundation of a keeper. McCarthy is dreadful and Willy is ancient, but I'd take either of them as it stands. Baz needs a year, or three, in the Championship before he is even remotely ready for this level.

It wasn’t his fault today.

I've no issue with the Bazunu signing, but it shouldnt have been to come in as our no1. There is clearly potential there as not everybody becomes a regular international at the age of 19, but he should have been given the time to develop by playing cup games and learning as an understudy to a decent no1. I think you would struggle to find more than a handful of GKs across the top 5 european leagues who are under 21 and starting regularly for their club.

Our GK problem really started when we gave McCarthy a new contract in late-2021 (the club not even announcing it was equally bizarre). He hadnt warranted an extension in my opinion and really we should have been going into summer 2022 with a clean slate with both McCarthy and Forster leaving.

I look at Fulham's signing of Bernd Leno and think of what could have been. A former German international who has played for a number of top sides, at the peak age and would have cost only £8m. He is making a massive difference already. Nick Pope was another piece of fantastic business, although I'm not convinced that he would have been a realistic target.

The test is does he make you feel nervous each week when he plays? If the answer is yes then he should not be in the team for a while.

He’s got a lot to learn. A season in the EFL would’ve been better for him.

Should've brought in someone experienced, even if it meant they in their 30’s (a keepers prime), we should’ve done that.

But I won’t tarnish him with the Angus Gunn tag for a while. That’s just moronic. 😂

I said this two months ago which a few agreed with, aside from MLG, naturally.

He isn’t helping himself now.

He is clearly lacking confidence and needs to be taken out of the firing line. Surely there’s some 35 year old free agent out there that could come in short term and do a job?!?

exactly, where is this potential? how do you see potential in a goalkeeper like that? it’s delusion if you look at a goalkeeper young or old with such poor handling and shot stopping and say he has ‘potential’.

He’s shite, end of. Needs a proper keeper.

Shades of the first season back in the prem when we saw similar mistakes each week, until Boruc came in and reminded us that goalkeepers actually make saves and command their area.

Gazzaniga showed more potential when he first came. Even Bialkowski looked better.

I think yesterday was the low point.

He's always been flappy with crosses, his shot stopping is suspect, but the thing he's supposed to be good at - kicking, was also very poor.

He needs a break and to earn a place back in the team.

Saved it. He reacts late, gets a hand to it and doesn't keep it out. If his reactions were better and he wasn't so limp wristed he'd have saved it.

But it's more than just saving the one that goes in. Every time the opposition cross the ball, it's heart in mouth time.....and that's not us fans, that's the defence as well. You just know he's going to flap at it. Flapper Baz did a couple yesterday and it seems to happen every game. As one poster said, yesterday's game was the difference between the two goalkeepers.

Not his fault today. Find another scapegoat.

Read my post - I said it's not just about today. I'm not scapegoating just making the point that, in my opinion, Bazunu is not yet good enough. Leaving him in goal will cost us points and may be detrimental to his career going forward as he is being asked to play at a level he is clearly nowhere near ready for.

He's very flappy, inexperienced and looks a shell confidence wise. When you are wondering when McCarthy is back you kind of have to admit the club dropped (another) GK clanger over the summer. No problem with us signing players like Bazunu in addition to others, but we're hanging them out to dry a bit when they're our 'first' choices.

Leno available in the summer, £6m. But we had this 'Let's find Tino' fixation on one of the most important areas of the team. Why does this club always think it's 'cracked' it when something works out once?

He picked up an injury in the first half and had problems kicking for the rest of the game. Lyanco took over for one goal kick.

I agree with you there. Our problem is that this club has got itself into this situation where he is the only choice available to us. Signing McCarthy up to a longer contract was a big mistake.

He lets in so many goals that just shouldn’t go in.

The one at wolves, no other keeper in the league lets that in.

Lloris dropped one in the net last weekend, De Gea got his feet all muddled up and gave away a goal recently. Keepers make mistakes like all players, it's just theirs are magnified because they lead to goals.

Ideally we take him out the team for a while. He's a very young, inexperienced keeper playing in the toughest league in the world. I don't doubt he'll be a top keeper but needs a break now.

Grandad, any Premier League keeper will expect to save efforts right at them on goal, no matter what. This isn't the first and it won't be the last.

Yesterday was never going to be saved. He did well to get his fingers on the ball. If he had kept that out it would have been save of the season.

And it wasn’t ’right at him’.

high profile players will get their mistakes magnified due to scarcity, bazunu letting in an easy goal is just another day at the office. it’s been said he should be dropped for a long time. i’m hoping the wait was for mccarthy to be back fit so we can stick him in goal or willy, either will do.

I think our Gav was chucked in too early. Unfortunately having McCarthy on the books just gets in the way.

I’ve just had a look at it again. If he had saved it then it would have been in the Gordon Banks / Pele category. It was headed down to his left and hit the ground just in front of him.

If you expect any goalkeeper to routinely save those then you are going to be disappointed.
