Bye bye has-beens, but why are they still being selected?

One name we won't hopefully hear anything more of in a Saints shirt is Mo Elyounoussi. His contract is up at the end of the season, so let's hope he will follow Selles to his next club - potentially someone like Rochdale who have just sacked their manager following relegation to the National League! That is probably more like the appropriate level of football for both of them.

Meanwhile Theo's contract also comes to an end at the end of the season, so one would expect he won't be with us next season.

So, why, then were both of them in our starting line up against Brighton? OK, Elyounoussi scored a goal and Theo had one disallowed, but so what? We are relegated already. We needed to use this game as a chance to give experience to players who will be with us next season.

I do get that those players may not be ready to start yet and some of them did get to play today, but why play players who won't be playing next season? And why put players who pretty certain not to be with us next season on the bench too? Ainsley Maitland-Niles may have said he wouldn't mind staying with Saints next season, but are the club really going to spend money transferring him permanently in the summer or even loaning him for another season?

Meanwhile Amo-Ameyaw wasn't able to get on the bench despite travelling with the squad!

Another opportunity missed!

Putting them in the shop window perhaps?

Why would we need to do that? Their contracts are up in the summer. If we wanted to place any players in the shop window then surely that would have seen us playing Tall Paul or other players who have been hopeless for Saints and whose contracts are not up for renewal this summer - i.e. players who are going to take wages out of the club to do nothing but rot in the reserves.

My only guess why they were playing is that Selles believes his own deluded publicity and genuinely believes he is in with a chance of staying at Saints next season; and with that it is his hope to re-sign Elyounoussi and Walcott for next season!

You’re right. I can’t think of any reason either. But that goes for the past three or four months.

Goals scoring hero today, top lad with a first class attitude never seen anyone with so much ability without the ball. Might not fit into Russ’s possession based game as that needs a different sort of player but thanks for all his efforts in his time here. Glad the away fans got the chance to clap him off today.

Surely they both have to start in the final game so we can give their service the send off it deserves? As you pointed out, they were both key in scoring today, even though one did get chalked off, and that was more than anyone else managed to do.

Starting with the youngsters, who may not be completely familiar with the intircacies of SellesBall may have led to a hammering. That wouldn't have helped us, our cherished ability to only lose narrowly, Selles' showreel and most importantly it might have had an impact on the kids' development.

Other, more senior players ahve to learn that it's what they show in training that counts. They shouldn;t be getting ahead of hard working players like Mo and Theo. That sends a bad message to the others. Before you know it, a number of them won't be putting in any effort outside of instagram and stinking up the dressing room. And that could impact results.

How about the club offers up the opportunity for a supporter (preferably season ticket holder, like me!!!) to be the Manager for The Day next Sunday?

Cant do any worse than Selles in his last 11 (or is it 12??) games in charge.

Alternatively we could have a select few to form a Committee to manage the team (as used to be the case in the 1950's with England games)

Provided we can keep the score down to, say, six it will provide a bit of fun and PR presence.

Because they’re our players and they’re the best we have available, so it’d be silly not to play them. Christ, if you think we’re bad now, I dread to think what we’d be like without JWP, KWP and Lavia in the side. There’s no point in playing players who WILL be here next season, we’ve just got to try and drag ourselves through as best we can and try not to be embarrassed.

If they keep it down to six and can get us a couple of attacks I'd hope the club are in touch with Mr Martin to tell him that the vacancy has been filled. 🙂

I don't think Walcott should be criticized too much. He's contributed more in last few months than many a player. Good finish today for the tightest of margins VAR offside.

BTW, no transfer for AMN as he is out of contract at Arsenal.

Wish I'd been there today see our fans give him the clap as a farewell gift.

Elyounoussi has been one of the worst players I've ever seen in a Saints shirt, and yet we've apparently offered him a new contract which he's rejected?!

Assuming it was trainee manager at the Megastore.
