Fraser Spinney Posted 20 May, 2023 Share Posted 20 May, 2023 It sounds as though Russell Martin is the man that the board want and that an appointment could be imminent. I wrote here about his playing style, philosophy and what to expect if he does become manager. Hopefully it's helpful! https://analyticsunited.co.uk/2023/05/20/what-to-expect-from-russell-martin/ 1
CB Fry Posted 20 May, 2023 Share Posted 20 May, 2023 The entirety of next season will be like that time The Simpsons took the piss out of football. Good luck Russell 👍

Saint_clark Posted 21 May, 2023 Share Posted 21 May, 2023 It's like the board don't want to sell season tickets or something.
CSA96 Posted 21 May, 2023 Share Posted 21 May, 2023 (edited) Yeah, who wants to watch ball-dominant, passing, attacking football anyway? I was a fan of the counter-pressing for the first half of Ralph's tenure but accepting being second-best and just waiting for the ball to turn over so we could break away was boring me to tears by the end, because nobody in our team seemed to have any composure in possession. It felt like a team of kids just charging about, toe poking the ball around the school field aimlessly and getting picked off. Of course, I'd much rather watch Nathan Jones biting his nails til they bleed while screaming for us to aimlessly whack it forward for somebody to chase after, or Ruben Selles doing his best Pep impression and getting too far into his own head by setting up with no strikers whatsoever, midfielders playing as false nines and 'play-stoppers' like Elyounoussi who are really good 'against the ball' Make some good signings and win a few early games with some enjoyable football and the flakey fans will come crawling back. They always do. That aside, I do genuinely feel for anyone who has had to stick it out every week at SMS for the past two seasons. It's not been easy and I hope for all of our sake's that the corner is fully turned before we reach the end of 2023. Saint Billy Posted 21 May, 2023 Share Posted 21 May, 2023 I suppose it was too much to ask SR to give us free flowing attacking football. This just sounds like more of the same drab, gutless, mind numbing shit we have already been served up but with a different label.
Badger Posted 21 May, 2023 Share Posted 21 May, 2023 (edited) From the article, and viewing/hearing Swansea views I’m expecting tedium. 5 hours ago, CSA96 said: Yeah, who wants to watch ball-dominant, passing, attacking football anyway? Yes, would love to watch passing, attacking football. Those old enough to remember will recall it was the way Lawrie set up his best sides many years ago. But if you want an example of passing football then for me it’s the Saints goal v Liverpool 1983. Less than 20 passes, many one touch, moving from one end of the pitch to the other cutting Liverpool (possibly best team in Europe at the time) apart. That’s a world of difference from slowly recycling it at walking pace 56 times, to include around the back four and GK. Badger Posted 21 May, 2023 Share Posted 21 May, 2023 (edited) This ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is passing attacking football: No passes back to Katalinic you’ll note. For one thing they probably didn’t dare due to the standard of his kicking. Any excuse to post this and revel in it. Didn’t realise we’d recently passed the40th anniversary of this. Hopefully it's helpful! https://analyticsunited.co.uk/2023/05/20/what-to-expect-from-russell-martin/ Thanks got chatgpt to summarise it. Russell Martin is being considered as a potential candidate for the managerial position at Southampton. He gained experience as a manager at MK Dons before joining Swansea City. Martin's playing style is heavily focused on possession and control, influenced by teams like Manchester City and Barcelona. His teams prioritize maintaining possession and dominating the ball. However, some supporters have criticized his style, claiming it can sometimes feel like possession for the sake of possession. Martin's teams have conceded avoidable goals while trying to play out from the back, which raises concerns for Southampton fans who are accustomed to their team conceding regularly. On the positive side, Martin's teams score a lot of goals, and he relies on a main striker to lead the attack. Martin typically employs a 3-4-2-1 or a variation of a 4-1-4-1/4-2-3-1 formation, with an emphasis on full-backs pushing high and wide in possession. He prefers short passes and a slow, measured build-up until the final third, where more intricate passes or wide crosses into the box are attempted. Martin's teams also employ pressing tactics out of possession, aiming to force opponents wide and prevent them from playing through the middle of the pitch. One potential concern with Martin's appointment is his focus on playing style over immediate results, which could test fans' patience if the team doesn't start well in the upcoming season. Cabrone Posted 21 May, 2023 Share Posted 21 May, 2023 No one on here (presumably) has any say on whether he is appointed or not so you might as well give the guy a chance. I'll be judging him after the transfer window and around the first month of games. We should start to have a good idea of what he's about. I'm personally expecting us to pick up momentum very quickly because that is what you need to get out of this league. The club owes the fans a real shot of promotion after this self inflicted mess of a season. I hope it will be way more exciting than what we've been served up recently.
