What about when Hughes went and we got Ralph, or when Selles went and we got Russell Martin? Or when Branfoot went and we got Alan Ball, or Stuart Gray to Strachan, or Dave Jones to Hoddle. Russell Martin was on 5 points from 16 games FFS. He is Nathan Jones in this scenario. 25 1

S-Clarke Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 I was never truly convinced by the bloke, felt a bit of an odd gamble last season when we needed a steady hand. We did get promoted, but I was underwhelmed by it all - not going to lie. We let in too many goals last season, had some great moments winning in the last min - but it shouldn't have been like that with the squad we had. It was a strong top 4, but we were the worst of the lot imo. I felt surprised when we got promoted, it took a little while to sink in as we never looked set for it all year. Fast forward to this season and we almost certainly weren't ready for it. Every single limitation in our game last season is still there, just heightened x10. I'm devastated that we never gave this season a shot and got relegated with not even a whimper. Martin was a manager who wanted to play in a way which suited him, he wanted to create a team that made him look good and had no thought of using a squad to their strengths. He threw so many players under the bus in his tenure by forcing them to play in ways not suited. Don't get me wrong, our squad in the main is utterly horrific for PL level, but I cannot believe we haven't managed to make a fight of it like Ipswich or Leicester. Our next appointment needs to be someone be with a view of next season and someone capable of creating a competitive Championship squad, don't give them ££££ to spend in January as there is no point. Do I trust SR to get the next call right? Absolutley not, they've got every decision wrong since they've been in charge so I'm fearing their next call. 28 1

saintstowin Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 Well, thoroughly enjoyed his first season and despite his shortcomings RM got us promoted and really came good at the end of the campaign with fantastic football memories made. I'm not going to hate him. Clearly out of his depth tactically in the PL with warning signs last season too. The gap is too big between the divisions and he did not help us bridge it in any way. 3

Once again though as with Ralph they’ve left it too long to make a difference this season. Cooper would likely get us up, and could begin building for next season, however would he just end up getting sacked after promotion as he did with Leicester and see us back to square one? No to Cooper...he looks distant!
Lee On Solent Saint Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 Should have happened after the Bournemouth game, least it would have given us a fighting chance. Am pleased they've finally had the balls to do it, just seems that this season now is a complete write off. 8

Not because it'll dictate whether we get relegated - that's not a destiny we can affect at this stage; it's a given. I'm more worried about whether we'll get a dud that regresses the club even further. Certainly we need an independent figure that is pragmatic and not led by some fantastical philosophy, some AI generated, half-baked non-entity of a playing style. We need good players in the right positions, bred to win games and not to 'perfect' a system. 2
SaintBobby Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 I’m generally quite a loyalist on managers. Tend to think clubs fire too quickly. But he had to go. The board gave him a new and lucrative contract and our position is now unsalvageable. He walks away with £5m or so? After winning one match in half a season….gees… 4

Trouble is, THB went out in the press after Chelsea, defended him and then Martin pushed him under the 🚌 after Villa, makinh a mistake trying to do what Martin demands. Martin got what he deserved, far more with his pay off. Some sympathy with his staff, hopefully they’ll build careers away from him now. Edited 15 December, 2024 by Gloucester Saint

goodymatt Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 (edited) 5 points from 16 games, no PL manager survives that. I enjoyed getting an identity back under him during last season, we were so far away from having one at the end of that relegation season. As others have mentioned the playoffs gave me lifelong memories, best atmosphere at St Mary’s and a win at Wembley (in a game with more meaning than the JPT). Ultimately as likeable as I personally found him, his football became toothless at the top level with a continued theme of defensive weaknesses. 10 mistakes leading to goals in 15 games matched a full seasons record, evidencing the style was flawed, with our squad at least. I watched that first half tonight and saw no identity, we weren’t even playing our possession style tonight. First time I asked myself the question, has he lost the players? I feel sad that it hasn’t worked out, I really wanted it to. The ownership certainly gave him more time than most clubs would have to turn it around, which according to history has made survival impossible. I cannot argue with the decision, it had become inevitable. He will get another Championship job easily IMO and I wish him well, with thanks for giving me one of the most memorable seasons as a Saints fan. Edited 15 December, 2024 by goodymatt 7

If they weren't hell-bent on keeping him in post no matter what this season then why on Earth did they wait so long to pull the trigger? That Bournemouth game was an utter shambles, and it was obvious to literally everyone except SR/Rasmus from that point that he was out of his depth. He was left in post far too long. The board share as much responsibility imo. He needed proper Prem players and some decent coaching experience support brought in. He had a small chance of success anyway, that clearly became zero. Look at Nuno, quality manager, decent pedigree, supported by the board, que success, but even he was chopped eventually. I do worry about what comes next. The choices are going to be very limited. 4

Understand some reservations after the Leicester experience but he’s damaged with a point to prove and an arrogant, we always know best Southampton Football Club have just had their nose firmly rubbed in their own mess with fans pouring out of stadium 25 minutes in being broadcast all over the world. It could work. Both parties humbled with a lot to prove. But Rohl’s football is what I like. Not sure I’d leave Weds right now if I were him. We will see. A great season for Rohl at Wednesday would be a top half finish the club is an absolute mess off the pitch. If he joins saints he basically has half a season to get the team playing his way and then a great chance of bouncing straight back with one of the richest teams in the league. If he’s ambitious he jumps ship. 3
Saint Fan CaM Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 Always a difficult decision to reconcile - on the one hand you want/wish/hope that he could turn it around but on the other, the performances and the results were just atrocious…really, really shit. So ultimately I’m glad he’s gone - I didn’t like the manner I which we played…the team didn’t look like a cohesive, well coached side. He used players in the wrong positions…he used his substandard mates who didn’t deserve to be in the team. I could go on. With regards to the next manager - I’ll be surprised if SR/SFC make an appointment that makes sense. It will be one that is left-field and we’ll be wondering “who is this” and “what next”, although that’s not to say it’ll be a disaster. One things for sure, it’s a massive opportunity to really re-set everything including supporter confidence. Whoever it is, they’ll be managing a Championship club next season…we’re done.

Cabrone Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 Nothing personal but I didn't rate him last season and he really got shown up in this one. He should have been shown the door 10 games ago. I have no faith that SR will get the next one right but that doesn't change the fact that RMs time was way overdue. washsaint Posted 15 December, 2024 Posted 15 December, 2024 For me, what spoke volumes about Martin was his smug, arrogant responses when Rishi Sunak was present at St Marys last season. Treat people how you would like to be treated is my motto.....and Martin's arrogance and smugness came back to bite him on the bum. His complete refusal to modify the playing style (when everyone knew we could not play that same way in the Prem) essentially means we have had a wasted season. That being said SR are terrible owners. Have they gotten a single decision right since taking over? Keep that wanker Ankusssen as far away from the club as possible. 6
FarehamSaintJames Posted 16 December, 2024 Posted 16 December, 2024 I can see Sport Republic not having a plan. They have a choice, they either pay out and go for all in the hope of getting a solid manager, given them money and effectively buy a new team mid season whilst taking a hit on FFP. Or Get a Championship/EFL manager that can potentially be ready for next season. There is no benefit of hiring anyone of that calibre now because the chances of us staying up are that slim. Anyone that thinks this job is going to appeal to Jose Mourinho or Graham Potter needs to give their head a wobble. Some muppet on Twitter has suggested Marco Silva leaves 5th placed Fulham to join us. Some really live in a dreamworld. The season is done. And with any luck hopefully most of those players careers in that squad are too. But it’s important to remember that now he’s gone, Sport Republic need to get full flak from the fanbase. Their appointments, their transfers and their ownership has been a shambles. They have no one to hide behind now. 8
danjosaint Posted 16 December, 2024 Posted 16 December, 2024 I wonder how many players are quite happy he's gone, I know they came out saying how great he was but as a pro you can't play to a system you know doesn't work. Also be interesting to see I'd we see ABK and TP a bit more 1
SW11_Saint Posted 16 December, 2024 Posted 16 December, 2024 Being there tonight and witnessing the incompetence on the pitch, and the toxicity off it, this was 💯 inevitable. I’m actually glad the blood-letting was swift. Better for RM and the club. It’s a sad end, and he has much to be commended for (for last season) but he’s been his own worst enemy this season - a few tweaks and we may have had 5-6 extra points which may have saved him. I have more optimism than I had a few hours ago - not about staying up of course, that ship has sailed - but the kicker is that any future improvement in our fortunes depends on SR making the right appointment. And that is whole other kettle of fish… 4
