Hm...from someone with 25 posts to their name.

He says the fans who stayed were amazing yet did not have the courtesy or the bravery (his favourite word) to walk over to those fans and thank them for sticking it out. Just ran down the tunnel like a coward.

It's what I heard just over an hour ago (and reported on the match thread).

Oh I totally agree, he needs to go 100%. I just find the get out of our club message particularly spiteful for a guy that did at least lead us to a victory at Wembley. A simple “time to go Russ” would have conveyed the same message with a bit less venom attached to it. That is more for the Redknapps and Nathan Jones kind of characters.

Inclined to agree. I’m not an RM fan by any means, but it’s sad that things have turned very bitter in the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately many wouldn’t think it through, just attach a phrase they’ve heard before.

That said, he’s brought it on himself with selections, tactics, and the players appearing unfit, and poorly prepared.

He did himself no favours with that lineup tonight.  I don't think he has much to work with but whatever there is, he's not getting the most out of it.

It's all too familiar with beaten teams - they start slow and lose the game and then 'rally' when the game is effectively over.

I think he's got some of the right ideas but the players can't execute it.

Trouble is, I've no idea who can be a possession based manager and get more out of the players.

I wanted him to do well and he's been unlucky at times, but at others, shown he is really struggling.

Yep, what choice did they have. I’d like to think/assume someone else is lined up but I really don’t trust these plumbs

Thinking about it though, that was incredibly quick. When was the last time a manager got sacked Thames quickly in the PL?

I thank him for least season. After we went down, we were a mess, loads of players didn't want to be here, and he turned it around. The play offs in particular, he got it absolutely spot on.

It hasn't worked out this season and it's sad because I wish it had done, but a change had to be made.

Hopefully, once the dust has settled, we as a fanbase can appreciate what he achieved.

Well, thanks for last season and Wembley Russ. I think the PL was a step beyond his ability as a manager but he did get us promoted at the first attempt, which is more than we could say about Redknapp or Burley.

Hopefully we've got someone decent already lined up as 'interim periods' are never pleasant.

Merry Christmas everyone. Now let's watch the board screw up the next appointment.

Nathan Jones dusting off his CV? Mark Hughes is available?

serious idea I’d take Danny Rohl from Wednesday, now’s how to organise a side and get them fighting.

I agree but the fitness levels are shocking for returning to the pressing and counter attacking football Saints do well.

It is, especially as there’s likely to be nobody in the whole world better than Russell Martin to take over.

Who ever is taking training tomorrow morning has a better chance of keeping us up even if it’s the tea lady and groundsman.

Just heard it on the radio.

"Often more than one in a short space of time, as clubs reflect on their situations."

Is this part of the 10 year plan?
If not, why wasn't it done months ago, as things aren't any different?
Is MR football going to be trusted to be anywhere near selecting the next manager?

He was given more than a decent chance to show what he could do in the Prem so have no problems with this decision - if anything a month or two too late.  We wont survive now no matter who comes in - it's all about getting some pride back into this football club before the start of next season.

Does anyone trust SR to get the next appointment right? If there was an xG equivalent on decision making they'd be Frankie Bennett.

I have no doubts they'll manage to find someone even worse. Impressive in a way. But let's just enjoy the fact that Russell Martins reign of terror is over.

Simon Rusk, according to the OS. U21 manager. Which might suggest the rest of the coaching team are outbound too.

Once saw one of his shots clear both tiers of the Milton once in a reserve match at the Dell.

I think there’s an assistant manager in a Canary Island div 3 team that SR have got their eye on.

I did want him gone but do feel kind of sad it ended this way. Gave us one of the best days ever in May and for that will always thank him. Good luck Russ in your next venture.

Russell Martin’s revolutionary Tantric Soccer was poised to change the world of football, but unfortunately, the world—well, Southampton FC, specifically—wasn’t ready for his genius. While most managers strive for victories, Martin focused on creating a slow, deliberate build-up, playing with the ball like it was a delicate piece of art, and never finishing. It was a football philosophy that teased, tantalized, and—ultimately—left everyone wanting more, but never quite delivering. Fans would cheer as Southampton strung together 40-minute passing sequences, only for the ball to be gently crossed into the keeper’s hands, leaving them in a perpetual state of longing. It was a football experience that had never been seen before, a zen-like flow that demanded patience and a deep understanding of the art of the game.

Unfortunately, it seems that the patience required for Tantric Soccer is not something the club or its supporters had in abundance. Despite the beauty of the buildup, the board began to grow restless, and fans began to wonder if they'd ever see a ball hit the back of the net again. Even with Martin’s insistence that true brilliance lies in the journey, not the destination, Southampton’s executives—who, let's face it, prefer a more straightforward approach to football—couldn't cope with the magnificence of his vision.

In a tearful farewell press conference, Martin shrugged off the sacking with typical calmness, sipping a carrot juice as he said, “Sometimes you need to let things breathe. A goal will come when it’s ready.” But the club, desperate for points, could no longer wait for the "perfect moment." And so, Russell Martin was shown the door, his Tantric Soccer deemed too avant-garde for the modern football world. Southampton fans may have to wait a little longer for enlightenment, but for now, their club will go back to playing regular football. As for Martin, he’s rumored to be in talks with a few lower-league teams who share his vision—but for now, he’ll probably be too busy making a mean tempeh stir-fry to care.
