Martin has to portray a massive amount of self belief. His absolute commitment to his style helps a lot there. That self belief, and the ego that goes with it, has to carry everyone at the club in the same direction. Hopefully his staff are equally committed, sharing and promoting that.

We get to see the cringy things, where the club are wanting to show their togetherness. But there's a lot more interaction that we don't see.

Martin's well aware of the criticism, from fans, internally and pundits. But the results shape everything. He's having to defend the basics of what he's hinged his career on. That's going to direct those interviews. And there's a load of them, where he's being asked the same things.

If we were winning, we'd be seeing him keeping the ego in check, being glowing about others while waiting for a bigger job offer. Instead, we're bound to get prickly answers considering where we are.

I saw Martin do post match interviews as a Norwich player. They were full of clichéd nonsense, and I remember being happy he wasn't spouting that rubbish at my club, after a resounding defeat.

He's now having to own what's going on, and we'll see that pressure on his answers.

They only need three cos they won’t be touching the ball much and just need be tidy and swift when we they have ball - before they kick it long to TP Sule and Tyler. Or if they overlap. The main thing in this new adaptation is bypass the ineffective midfield passes and get into last third way quicker. 
 

Other adaptation includes man marking from corners - not zonal, and shooting on sight and vastly accelerated advancement of play. A disruptive game like what Bournemouth do. Instructions should be a demand for at least 15 shots per match or no match fee. 
 

There, tried to think of as much the opposite of what we do atm but with the squad and best players we have to use.  Would it be better than what we do atm? Could hardly get fewer points - though it’s possible, and maybe get worse beatings but it might also work. Is this what is meant by RM adapting the tactics do you think at its most extreme?

So someone with a much better record looses the dressing room but Martin who has won only one game (and was lucky to win that) hasn't lost the dressing room and stays because he's best pals with all the players and they get an easy ride!

Some nice person put up some highlights of us against Liverpool. On one of them Klopp is having a warm chat with Koeman. Clearly Klopp has tons of respect for him and his achievements.

Quite a switch to a manager who bursts into tears and his successors. Martin did play for Scotland, but doesn't have that reputational clout.

He got us winning away and scoring goals ! Winning 3-1 at Man City, and 4-1 at Wolves stick in the mind. I know Man City weren’t the team that they are now, but still impressive.

We’d have done a lot better sticking with Luggy than going down the route we did that season.

I was there for City away, at the Barbados Test for Wolves and missed Claus’s first goal. My old man attended home games in my absence and saw Delap’s overhead kick. I should have gone on Barmy Army duty more often!

Allegedly kept our players waiting in a boiling tunnel at Plymouth pre-season whilst he received an award from them which caused ill will with the senior players (IIRC that was from MLT’s memoirs). Beattie got serious shit off their fans playing for Everton but denied he was horrible to Sturrock or offered him his autograph (was the rumour). 

Still, even 04/05 looks sane compared to Russell Martin, Rasmus Ankerson and the madness of SR.

Yes, it was Spurs. I remember the goal as was at the game. Had forgotten it was under Sturrock though. Had some good results under him. Thought at the time it was a shame how it fell apart for him.
 

Perhaps it was doomed to fail, as his appointment was also shrouded in a bit of controversy on the back of the Hoddle debate. But a better manager than the history books seem to suggest.

Had a promising young spine developing in the team at the time. Fitz Hall at CB, Folly in the middle. Griffit coming through.

It all fell apart very swiftly.

Koeman was a superstar and bona fide legend for Barca and Holland in teams full of superstars.  A playing hero of mine so was biased when he managed us, but enjoyed his time at the same level as McMenemy - we are just little Southampton, well so fucking what!

This is the sort of shit that SR and Martin will be lapping up. They will believe that the style is vindicated because of these comments. I wish a manager would just come out and say Martin is a complete arrogant twat, and playing Southampton is going to be the easiest match of the season.
