One other thought - which players do Martin's supporters think he has made better? Because if he's moving things in the right direction, you'd generally expect some players to be playing better than they have previously and being eyed up by the big clubs. But it seems like the opposite is happening in the last year. And no, Dibling doesn't count.

Expand

Not sure why dibling doesn't count, but it would be quicker to name players who haven't improved? Nearly all of our players are better than they were before he joined, some markedly so, eg bednarek, smallbone, kwp.  But being better doesn't make them good enough for the premier league, or to be eyed by big clubs.  The best manager in the world can't get smallbone to real Madrid level.

So easier question, who has gotten worse, or stayed the same?  Sulemana maybe? Anyone else?

Very possibly - difficult to know nowadays - I see they have 14 players on £50k plus!

Apparently Ramsdale is on £120k PW 😬

Looks at this though...

But Brentford (solid mid table for multiple seasons) haven't got loads of players on 4 year contracts for £100k a week.

I wished I'd looked at this website before now because you've been going on about this PSR bullshit since the summer.

We spent loads this summer and we're still shit.

There are multiple reasons but one of them isn't some bollocks about financial fair play.

Maybe he thinks it’s an opportunity to win and build confidence? Of course it could go complete other way.

The only win we need is a premier league one and Martin can't deliver that so I guess he thinks this is the next best thing! 😂

What you on about - Brentford are already full of established PL players - that's got nowt to do with PSR, just that they have bought extremely well and are very well managed? Criticise the fact that we need better players for sure, but that's not what PSR is about.

Edited by Farmer Saint

So looking at who should be our rivals:

Bournemouth - 11 players over £50k, average £63k, £36m per annum

Brentford - 4 players, £56k, £12m

Wolves -  7 players, £71k, £26m

Ipswich - 1 player, £150k, £8m

Leicester - 12 players, £76k, £47m

Everton - 12 players, £81k, £50m

Palace - 15 players, £68k, £53m

Saints - 5 players, £77, £20m (including Bednarek, Aribo, Cornet and Armstrong - Ramsdale is on £120k)

Nothing to discuss, just quite interesting to see what everyone is up against. Frank is quite clearly an outstanding Manager and they have done very well with an established core of players.

Sorry is there a different wage bill website showing all the Brentford players on £100k a week four year contracts? They're all established Premier League players so they must be on that then.

Which players are they?

I still don't get how SR didn't predict that Martin would be dismal in the premier league everyone was saying he might get away with his style in the championship but it would be suicide in The premier league without world class players not only did they not forsee it they gave the him a new contract without any prior evidence that he could deliver the step up!

I'll give Martin credit though he must have been clever with his contract there must have been a clause that in the event of promotion that the club had to extend his contract! why else would they do it? Madness

You've been saying for some time how we can't compete (specifically with clubs like Brentford) because of we can't match their wages because of financial fair play.

You've been saying last year's 3-straight-back-down was now going to be the norm every season because of financial fair play restrictions.

Turns out they aren't actually paying more than us.

So you're saying all that stuff was load of bollocks after all?

If Martin can't set up a side to play decent football against a very poor Stoke side it shows just how limited his talents are. We should have given them a chasing and won by 4 or 5 nil but, in the end, it could have gone either way.

That’s what really struck me amongst a hilariously chaotic game which did keep me engaged (rare for Saints these days) - the level of fitness has sunk to the 2008 Dodd and Gorman days. Stoke reserves looked quicker and stronger even if the technical refinement wasn’t there after about 40 minutes. A few of the Saints players looked like they were really blowing out of their backsides.

It’s a long way from the WGS side who scored late goals regularly, Poch double training and Ralph pressing. We did score a lot of late goals last season tbf, but the fitness seems to have dropped when we’ve gone up a division.

Still, Kraft was too busy having a laugh with Russell to notice.

Koeman went out of the cup at League 1 Sheffield Utd. Strachan needed an injury time equaliser at home to Millwall in round four to reach the 2003 final. Puel got to Wembley with an absolute dredge of a performance against Palace, saved by one moment of brilliance by Boufal. Poch went out against Sunderland with everyone fuming that he’d rested players.

If you think we’re entitled to a default 5-0 performance in any cup tie, I don’t know which club you’ve been supporting up until now.

Agreed on fitness - I said this a couple of times too, it's really noticeable in this league, they do not look a fit bunch of players compared to other teams and nothing like the fitness demanded by Strachan, Pochetino and Hassenhuttl as you say.

I've said before we're a mess on various defensive aspects, but this is a good point - it could be fitness, but I think it's more likely to be a lack of focus on defensive rigour by the coaching staff. To defend well is pretty similar in many sports and the number 1 thing off the block is you have to really want to defend well and take pride in defending. You can always see which teams do that and which haven't put the work in. And to me, we look like the latter.

That maybe true about fans not being entitled to win 5-0 BUT fans are entitled to see the manager and his team at least try to win 5-0.

Especially against a lower league team AND also not run out of steam due to poor fitness levels.

Bless you, you’re using a league cup run as an example to praise our manager who has 1 point from 9 league games, due to a penalty shootout win against a relegation rival, an injury time win away to a side who were bottom of the championship , and an 88th min at home to a weakened bottom 6 championship side having given up a 2-0 lead, as some sort of glowing reference to how good he is?
