Harsh on Ralph that. In general he did a decent job with us. Even when he was sacked we weren't in an awful position. Yes his tenure had run it's course but everything since then has been the problem.

And with Ralph, I always got the feeling he wanted the best for the club and had the club's best interests at heart.

With RM, I've always had the feeling he's got RM's best interests at heart and the club is a stepping stone. This 'I'll live and die by my principles' nonsense is telling us he'd rather preserve his 'principles' and take us down rather than adapt to the situation we're in. Or perhaps he's just too stubborn to accept what's he's doing is wrong.

A few posters have commented on the lack of footballing men in the hierarchy of the club. There doesn't seem to be anyone at the top to tell him to change direction even though we can all see that's what's needed.

Mods, can we run a poll please ?

“Who agrees with the cunts, and who agrees with the pricks?”

How about a half time cunts v pricks " sort it out " in the centre circle next game?

Probably be a lot more entertaining than the Saints performance.

What if you're a cunt and a prick? Asking for a friend.

Well Farmer, it’s a very courageous first step your “friend” has made by asking this question. Tell your friend that it’s ok, gender is fluid and they can be whatever they want to be and no one can judge them for it. Plus they will find great support networks are available.

when your friend accepts this, you , or they,  or them may find you are a lot less angry about life generally.

We need to scrap the possession based football model all together in my opinion and get someone in with a more balanced overall approach  to games where we concentrate on possession only some of the time basically someone who can adapt and mix the game up when needed and can React to things that happen in the game with the correct subs, someone who values winning the game over merely looking like the team can pass it around

It's interesting, because Pep said Southampton were defending by having the ball and moving it around and not by actually defending. But there is an argument whereby the possession based game is deskilling the players by not allowing them to do the fundamentals of the game. And I suppose if the training sessions focus on possession, that is why the players appear bad and unprepared when the opposition has the ball

I think it’s a combination of things:

1. He only knows how to coach one system, so he doesn’t have any choice

2. He is stubborn with it, so probably wouldn’t change it even if he could because he doesn’t like to be seen to be bending to pressure from others

3. He wants a CV that shows that all his teams have the right possession-based stats in the right places, so that when the time comes it will impress teams bigger than us who want to play possession-based. So that regardless of whether he’s been sacked for the approach not translating into results with little old Saints, he can point at those stats at the next interview and say ‘See, if I can get a limited group like them to do it, imagine how effective it would be at a club like yours with more money for better players to  implement it’.

Football’s such a mental business that I have a feeling it will work too. It’s worked three times so far, as he’s moved upwards each time. (MK Dons > Swansea > Saints). I could see a decent-ish foreign team with European aspirations going for it.

I absolutely agree that it’s all about him though. He literally said as much in his post-match interview after City. ‘I don’t want to stand and watch a style I don’t believe in’. That’s all about putting what he wants over what’s best for the club (which at this stage is points at all costs). It’s the definition of a vanity project.

why is he still here?

why are we giving him the next two 'six pointers' against a revitalised Everton and Wolves?

why are we sleep walking into smashing the record low points total?

I agree, but he's doing it with the blessing of the board , I get what Martin could gain from it in future employment but can't understand the acceptance from management other than they just don't know any better

I don't agree with this point. The way things are going we are going to break Derby's record low points tally and who will want the manager who presided over that? Martin will not get a step up when we finally twig that he is ruining our club and get rid of him.

It does sound ridiculous doesn't it, but the Kompany example going to Bayern from Burnley although extreme shows sometimes it's about more than results.

Kompany was a great footballer, Martin wasn't.

I'm not sure that is particularly relevant. Gerrard and Lampard were great footballers. Turning into managers, this generally means nothing at getting top jobs.

Sure, he could go to a mid table team who wants this, I wonder if Kompany had different ways of playing, different tactics etc. I didnt see a single game of Burnley's to be fair so that may not be why Bayern took hime, I just dont believe it was due to VK havign a great career.

I wonder what the owners are waiting for, what they are seeing, what they are thinking and what they are expecting to happen because it seems they believe Russell will suddenly start getting results. Maybe they think it is really going to be like Moneyball where the baseball team loses match after match and then suddenly starts winning every game. They are living in the land where the cuckoos fly in the clouds I'm afraid. It is inevitable that Martin will be sacked at some stage and, allowing him to continue this weird vanity project is utter madness. We need to beat both Everton at home and Wolves away to go even a little way towards making up for points tossed away in games against some of the easier opponents we'll face. Is anyone confident we'll do that? Seems a very long shot from what we've seen so far.

Yeah I wouldnt disagree. He isnt in the same league as Kompany for me, and has all been about vanity.

I think its literally because they cant find anyone else who would be good enough and fit their criteria.

Pep is full of shit.  I didn’t hear him praise us from the rooftops when we knocked them out of the League Cup to stop their quadruple.

Not interested in his feint praise after a win where his team were pretty much strolling.  He just wants another easy game at St Mary’s.

I have enjoyed the 8-0 Sunderland game , which everyone left feeling good . I was there when Koeman said farewell , although we didn't know that at the game . I sat through quite a few home games where a draw was bearable but also quite a few losses where it wasn't . This season is the worst for saturday night depression that I can remember and won't get better until Martin goes .

So desperate that some seem to think the fact that we didn’t get hammered by City is a positive.

He also won the championship with relative ease.

So as a manager he has a much better record already too. It isn’t a like-for-like comparison at all.

Exactly - my expectations for this season were rock bottom due to the state of the squad post relegation, and the lack of business we could do this Summer due to PSR. I'm not overly unhappy, because this is what I expected (and predicted TBF).

It'll be very interesting to see how much Jase did see in RM, to see if he'll at least get an interview. It could be Jase's leaving gift (for both him and us) - albeit 6 months late.

I formally issue a "Come and Get Him" plea to Jason Wilcox.

Getting compensation from Scotland for George Burley was staggering, but that would be pure mental.

Had we some more points on the board, he'd be putting his name in.

Depending on how long their process takes, he has a chance of getting a couple of wins on the board.

While managers get paid far more than assistants, I wonder if he'd consider going to United in that capacity, the structure put in place by Wilcox.

Not only that, they were poor managers but great players? They never even worked out how to play together in an England midfield. The manager was wrong, he should have left one of them out, whichever he preferred. They never worked out how to play together, then manage, no thanks. I watched Burnley a lot in their promotion season as I was interested in how Tella was doing. They played an awful lot of quick breaks from the back up to Tella etc to take on the stretched defence. As most of that team were loanees he lost them for the Premier.

I wonder if the lack of fitness that Saints seem to show towards the end of each half, also has something to with this. The training must be more orientated to passing skills than fitness training i.e. on the assumption that we will be the team in possession making the other team do the running.

We were not good at defending with the ball, we were just shit at attacking.

Defending with the ball would make sense if we were holding onto a lead, or even a draw, for pretty much the whole game Saturday we were behind.
