I think we have actually changed a lot game to game this season, usually to our detriment and would actually have been better if we had more consistency in selection and team shape.

I know that doesn't fit with your prevailing view but do you genuinely think we have done the same thing each week?

I actually think our best 11 is relatively easy to name now, bar possibly full back and one of the wide positions. Let's hope RM can start finding some consistency in his selections.

We got promoted through the playoffs because we dropped the suicidal passing at the back, moved the ball quicker and were more direct. Let in fewer goals and scored more including the Leeds game at the end of the season.

Yet the winning goal in the play off final was a 12 pass move that started in Saints penalty area. Just saying. I think this idea that there was some enforced change of tactics that led magically to positive results is overdone. Basically what happened was that McCarthy booted it long occasionally because he’s not comfortable passing the ball under pressure.

As shown, you don't need a decent manager. You can scrape through the play off's with a mediocre Championship manager.

Hahahahahaha OK then.

We're on one point no wins and jack shit goals because of our players vs the rest of the league and poor Russell Martin is completely helpless.

But we got promoted last season not because of our players vs the rest of that league but because Russell Martin is a Pep Guardiola elite level genius.

Right you are then.

Russell Martin is a slightly above average championship manager. A manager at that level with the players we had last year will always have a reasonable chance of promotion. Conversely, that same manager will always have a good chance of relegation in the league above with a lower level of players for that league. Admittedly I didn't think we would be doing quite as badly as we are.

In the Daily Mail today they report that Russell Martin  was one of the English managers not interviewed for the vacant post.  🙄🫣

Saying you don't need a decent manager to get promoted is one of the stupidest things I've read on here. Burley had the biggest budget in the league when he just about edged into sixth on the final day of the season. We were comfortably in third/fourth and chasing the top two throughout the second half of last season, then we won the playoffs about as convincingly as you can ask for against two pretty decent teams.

Well a step forward at least, the other day you were much more comfortable trashing the players.

Let's see, if we win today, a full throated support of the players that deliver that win.

90% of our players I've seen solid evidence that they aren't good enough, hence I believe there is very little chance of us staying up. People wanted Martin gone after six games, I'm prepared to give him longer.

Was listening to The Rest is Football podcast the day before yesterday - their reaction to the news of Tuchel. Lineker name dropped RM as one of the young up and coming English managers (Of which there are very few at a good level).

The argument seems to be that in Germany Bundesliga managers get promoted from running the Under 23 side, or recruited from a lower tier: This almost never happens in the PL. The PL hires proven managers from other big leagues because they have the money and pulling power to do so.

As Russ stated in the Leicester press conference; in order to get a PL gig as an English manager you have to get promoted from the Championship as manager. This automatically means that any English manager trying to prove themselves needs to do so with one of the weakest teams in the league, and as the contrast in resources of PL teams gets ever more stark it will only ever get harder for English managers unless something changes.

My thought is that if we short-sightedly fire RM now, we may be questioning why we did that in 18 months when he is successfully managing a bigger team.

Part of the reason Southampton can't have nice thingsTM  is because we don't fight hard enough to keep them, not just because they are taken from us.

Maybe I'll feel differently after we get humped by Leicester this afternoon, but right now I am still RM in.

You clearly did pay "little attention" to the CoT, as we were nearly always correct this Summer...either way I think you're missing the light-hearted nature of the CoT - the only bullying that occurs is the horrendous name-calling, abuse and stalking directed upon the members of a group. Again, if you don't want to read it, don't go on there - you're not made to read it.

Apart from that, there clearly is a lot of toxicity on this forum - this is due to the build up of cliques, fake personalities, fake wives and overall an attitude of distain towards other fans that are supposed to support the same club.

Just the one goal though. Far too close for comfort and Dan James did hit the underside of our bar later on.

How many more goals might we have scored with a more active approach?

I recall a heart in mouth moment when Daly (can’t recall his first name) hit the bar in 1976 Cup Final at 0-0. Not often mentioned now, and doubt you’d find it many history books. Who’s complaining?

(Similarly Romeu in the 2017 League Cup final).

Not wishing to detract from your overall point about our approach.

Yes, RM is going to stand or fall based on the principles of his system. If nothing else, we'll be spared a Jones scenario where he says that up to that point, it's not really been his team.

RM knows that this is a season to keep the upward trajectory of his career going. His approach is his selling point (he's not changing it), he's considered up and coming and is getting media exposure in the most covered league in the world.

With a point on the board, and the tenure a lot of managers get I'm not surprised he's trying to get mentioned elsewhere. His contract with us should see him fine financially, but he's ambitious beyond us.

If we're looking for a successor, then he will be looking to see what opportunities are out there too. The recent England/ Man Utd rumblings were windows of opportunity. If not for those jobs, then possibly for the vacancies created by those being filled.

We'll see how long SR are willing to stick with it. For all the left field stuff, they've gone through plenty of managers and playing styles already, getting found out along the way

Do they still begrudge the George Burley appointment?

The Scottish side has plenty of Norwich and ex-Saints players that he'd know well.

They once played a striker less formation too.

Despite recent results, Clarke would have to resign, having taken them to tournaments.

That was their only meaningful chance, that aside they never really looked like scoring.

You could also ask how many more goals might we have conceded with a more 'active' approach?

Fact is Leeds were favourites but we won relatively comfortably.

Take your point about the number of passes. But it wasn’t of course an enforced change. The move started in our penalty area. We moved the ball quicker. Sometimes that makes all the difference. Good goal wasn’t it.
