Forest had four shots and scored four times. McCarthy is apparently the second highest paid player in the club and I hope he never plays again. Slow to react to situations and accepts defeat too easily. Sums up the present squad.

Forster wasn't the answer either. We could have got Leno at Fulham who has been pretty decent this season. There were plenty of good keepers at our level we could have brought in. But we have to try and chase a profit on a player yer again.

Keeper should be one of the easier positions to fill in the prem, but we've got it wrong for years now.

It's also one of the most important. It's no coincidence that the poorest keepers statistically (Baz and Meslier) are likely to get their sides relegated.

Forster didn’t want to be here, we tried

Baz was never ‘supposed’ to be the first choice, but was thrust in because McCarthy isn’t good enough

Neither of them are good enough, quite how we made McCarthy one of the top earners is baffling to me

The problem with Forster and McCarthy is that they are absolutely prime candidates for a back up / home grown / good professional slot in any PL team. They are sought after by clubs who can offer more money to do less. Game time is the only downside for keepers like these two when big clubs come calling but why not take the risk and hope there's an injury that means you find yourself in the team? Forster has done it and I'm pretty sure McCarthy will be given the option to do it in the summer by someone. Every top club who doesn't have a British number one will be looking to have a homegrown number 2 or 3. There's only so much the club can do to keep Forster and there's even less we can do now to keep McCarthy. Pretty sure the club will be in Caballero's ear to stay on and work with Bazunu and Lis with a coaching role too.

He didn't in the end, but he definitely did at the start. He was really pissed off that the club chose to give Macca a contract over him, and the club was only ever going to offer 1 of them a contract. He was completely fed up at Saints, and you can't blame him.

Yeah I didn’t get the whole story but I was aware, at the end, his relationship with Saints was completely eroded and so what you say makes perfect sense

I believe we offered Macca a contract reasonably early ? IIRC

Another reason I don’t get the Semmens love in, he did as much right as wrong in my eyes

Not convinced offering the contract was a Semmens thing tbh. Pretty sure Ralph had a choice to make about which one he wanted and chose McCarthy. Pretty sure either way that we would still be having this conversation anyway just the other way around, both would have attracted criticism and made the other look more appealing. Like the whole Bednarek/Stephens who should we keep/loan out argument, it's just a reflection of where we are that the best option really would have been to cut ties with them all and we'll probably get that this summer.

Basically we have 2 good backups when we really need a good number 1. Both are ok but that is not enough in the premier league.

We haven’t had a competent goalkeeper consistently since Koeman left, Forster’s confidence completely went after that mistake at Palace.

Which one of the four do you think he should have saved? I mean I'm not his biggest fan but he was hung out to dry by the players in front of him, especially when Johnson and Gibbs-White started cheating by actually running with the ball at pace.

He was left of centre for the first, but woefully exposed nonetheless. Bazunu is more agile and would have made a better attempt at the others.

McCarthy is scared of the ball, or rather, scared of getting hit by it. If you look at all his efforts he makes a show of trying to save it but somehow manages to get out of the way. My father explained to me many years ago that a lot of keepers don't want to get hurt by the ball, and if you look more carefully you wll see what he meant.

I actually think it is, McCarthy is, or was a half competent shot stopper but struggled with Aerial balls, is absolutely woeful with the ball at his feet and struggles to command his area

Pretty similar to Baz as far as detractors go but Baz is much better with his distribution

McCarthy is terrible and has been for years, coupled with probably the worst penalty saving ratio ever. Literally everytime the opposition get a penalty with him in goal, you know it’s going in.

McCarthy not left a chance for those 3 goals. Horribly exposed as Baz has been all season.

We seem to consistently concede so many unchallenged goals from deep in the penalty area.

I do think this is the primary issue, we’re just a terribly disjointed team when it comes to defending, which is why Ralph, Jones etc all tried to bolster the amount of defenders we have back there

But the stats are there, both Baz/McCarthy have underperformed their metrics compared to other GKs

Baz, imo, has a future, it was just too early for him, AM is however a terrible keeper

I'd totally forgotten Lis is ours as well. Christ, how shit must he be if he was only worthy of loaning out elsewhere.?

He’s beaten at his near post, far post, dead centre of the goal; and if a shot is anyone near him he dives out the way.

Also something I noticed a while back, he has no reaction whatsoever once he’s conceded. He just strolls to the back of the net slowly, picks the ball up and passes back to the centre circle with no urgency, aggression or mentality to pick up and go again.

He‘s got to be one of the worst keepers we’ve had.

we can't be paying Mccarthy £50k a week or whatever in the Championship.  The club will want to move him on and the fact they didn't play him to ensure he got a wage cut next season won't have impressed him. He will want to depart, so long as he gets a decent contract elsewhere. Someone in the Prem will hopefully fancy him as a second or third choice keeper.

Pickford has shown what a good keeper brings you. Forest invested in Navas in January and look what he’s done for them. I honestly think if we’d got this one position correct we wouldn’t be going down.

I good keeper gets you maybe 8-10 points a season.

You look at some of the goals we conceded and they were so avoidable.

The whole sides like that. No bollockings, let a soft goal in and the just bimble back to the half way line, head down ready for kick off. They never dig out the culprit, hassle the officials or kick off with the opposition. Soft as shite.

Agree, a solid and reliable keeper should be first on the summer shopping list - rebuild the spine from there - but what’s the betting Sport Republic think they can get away with Bazunu.

It will depend on whether AM moves away. Being English he may get a gig in the premier league as 3rd choice or 2nd at a bottom 6 club, but if he’s still here the new manager will face the choice of Baz or AM. I’ll be surprised if we bring in a clear and obvious number 1.

Think it’s likely that McCarthy will go as a back up to a Prem team and that Martin will be introduced to Bazunu as his number one for the promotion push next week. It’s the hope of the bleeding obvious that kills you.

There’s no ‘getting away with’ IMO, Baz will be a decent enough Championship keeper. Don’t forget Kelvin was in the team of the season at that level.

All three teams that went down had shite goalkeepers in their squad. It’s such an important position to get right.

To be fair, I have seen a few relegations, and they made me sad.... this whole relegation was avoidable and made me angry! The goal keeper situation is just a small part of the whole...too many mistakes culminating in this disaster....and it wasn't too long ago when a lot of people on here were wanting AM back in goal because he was better than GB....

To be honest I’d be amazed if our under 13’s GK is any worse than GB or AM! Arguing over which is worse is like debating if it’s better to be punched or kicked in the balls, neither is a decent option!

We’ve twice been burned signing young keepers from city let’s hope we’ve either learnt our lesson or the old third time lucky thing kicks in!

Is there really any other Premier League club that would be stupid enough to take Alex McCarthy, even as a back up??? They've all seen him play now. When does his contract end? We'll probably need to release him in order to finally get rid of him. It will be absolutely soul-destroying if he is still lining up in goal for us AGAIN next season.

You've only got to look at Scott Carson bumbling around at City. 37 years old and made less than a handful of appearances since signing from Derby.

McCarthy could conceivably end up in a similar situation.

Mark Travers was one of the best keepers in the championship last year and Baz is ahead of him in the Ireland sey up. Hes good enough for a team looking to get promoted.

Steffen and Muric did well in the Championship after City sold them last summer. Surely we didn't sign a worse goalkeeper than Middlesbrough and Burnley got from the same club.

Forster is every bit as awful as McCarthy. It's just Forster's mistakes got brushed under the carpet while McCarthy is blamed for every single goal he concedes even when no keeper in the world could have stopped them.

I’d be happy with Bazunu in goal next season, providing that we have a few thugs in defence and in midfield to install a tougher mindset.

We news players that want to put a tackle in and not shy away from a header.
