I will clarify in case it’s needed. It just grates that all the plaudits (or far more than when he was our player) etc come now he’s moved to WH.
I find that unbelievably annoying. Suppose was inevitable though.

Except its not true. He was constantly praised by the media for years and years. Every time we won a free kick, pretty much every time we won a corner and he trotted over to take it.

He's been a blue eyed boy to commentators and pundits for years and years and years.

There are people clamouring for England call ups that simply weren’t before.

He was being lauded on Sky the other day like he wasn’t before.

yes he’s had some plaudits but not to the level it is no. Even Rio Ferdinand has jumped on the bandwagon.

The narrative was always “if he was that good he’d have snapped up by now”. Not anymore.

Happy to admit it might be the booze talking and I’m probably just bitter still!

If you're looking at it as a neutral, he looks like a player completely rejuvenated by moving to a better side. Seems to have at least and assist or a goal per game at the moment? He never got anything like that attacking consistency for us.

His goal a diving header , is that a first ?

Watching him score that goal I was reminded of years ago, maybe 2014ish, when I posted on here saying that I could see him emulating Frank Lampard as a goalscoring midfielder with excellent awareness of what's around him, timing runs into the box with perfection and getting himself plenty of goals. I was ridiculed at the time and over the years I accepted that I was probably wrong, but it seems as if we were wasting his talents this entire time and he is indeed a Lampard type midfielder.

I don't believe any mainstream front line commentator or pundit has ever said anything like "if he was that good he'd been snapped up by now".

He's had an excellent start at his new club and that's an interesting angle, that's all.

I agree  that many pundits / former players were quick to praise him (except Southgate who regularly ignored him for England)  but what was most

annoying for me was that vociferous band of  "Saints fans "  who continually came on line and criticised him for doing " nothing special"....except

maybe scoring those free kicks and the occasional penalty, when there was a group of  " fan favourites " who contributed much less to the team's efforts.

Now that he's playing for ..." a London Club "..and drawing M.o.M awards nearly every game - just how is he performing any differently ?.

Right now we can clearly see what he brought to the Saints' overall team performances.    There's a huge hole in midfield where he used to play.

Sadly i can't remember who it was, but it was discussed on TalkSport (i'm pretty sure by someone a year or two ago.....if i can find the link i'll post it.)

Whether you consider the Danny Murphy's of this world as frontline commentator or pundits is up to you.

The argument being that at his age (late 20's) if he'd been such a standout player why wasn't he being linked with big clubs. In fact, he wasn't being linked with any big clubs this time around was he? You know what i mean by big club - without shouting West Ham stats at me.

Also, if you actually look back at his career at Saints it's really only the last 2 years he's looked like a danger from set pieces, and for much of his career he didn't really have a defined position.

I'm delighted for him, and gutted he's not with us - but he's not been a stellar performer for us up until the last few years.

Always thought his corners were a bit crap for us, but perhaps it was just those who were in the box waiting for the cross?

The only times I remember us scoring from his corners are a couple of Bednarek glancing headers at the near post.

It just shows how shit we have been and still are at attacking the ball in the air.

The Ipswich game was just heading practice for their centre backs from our corners.

Tbh I look forward to his departure, apart from his free kicks I think he's massively overrated and one of the reasons where we are where we are.

Definitely well rid. We’re building something special now without the JWP millstone round our necks, what’s especially good is how we mugged off West Ham.

Yeah, imagine if we hadn't sold and still had to endure him in midfield alongside that Spanish guy who's "legs have gone".

We'd be in a right mess I tell you.

I know, we fans are so superficial and in the moment, thank god we have Rambo at the helm who is Cleary light years ahead of us in his thinking.

There's also a huge hole at captain..... another aspect of JWP's game that some on here criticised. It was really noticeable in the last 2 home games how no one was really pulling the team together, to rally and fight back. I've nothing against AA but he doesn't seem a captain to me. In fact the most vocal player seemed to be young Harwood-Bellis.

It's also noticeable how JWP is quite vocal in the bits of West Ham games that I've seen on TV.

Pet hate ”of this world” What does it even mean?

The man utds, barcelonas of this world

The David Beckhams of this world.

Why do people say this?

Often used with 'your' - your Man Utds of this world. Your is used to offer and example, but then users proceed to list all the examples - your Man Us, your Citys, your Liverpools, your Real Madrids, your Barcelonas of this world.

Fans on here claiming Romeu leaving was the right move (as his was past it) is a thing of beauty.

I never thought he was past it but it was fair enough that we let a long-serving player go to his hometown club. The real issue wasn't even that we didn't replace him but that we didnt sign a backup for his replacement

It's a little tiring all of the "I told you so" type posts...  We all knew JWP could be quality, but it's also fair to say we haven't seen him at his best since the early days of Ralph.  Last season I can only think of Everton away where he dominated a game.

We are now having it confirmed that the reason for that seemingly was the structure at saints and how he was asked to play.  The number of assists he has from corners already is testament to this and yet another reason to lament the management / coaching in place the last few years.

If we aren't going to utilise a player of his quality properly it's arguably better for all concerned if they are moved on to a club who will.  Now £30m seems a steal, but for how he has played in the last few seasons it was a fair price in the summer.

I would suggest that the number of assists from corners has more to do with the quality of teammates in the box rather than the management/coaching. There are a lot of stats that show JWP to be better now, this isn't the best example.

Fair enough, but it's only a example.  I ain't trawling through stats to try and prove my point 😂

I'd disagree it's has more to do with quality of teammates.  Set piece coaching is a huge part of any teams setup, and lesser teams can and have used them in the PL to be effective offensively.  The fact we had a quality dead ball specialist and yet rarely scored from corners or indirect free kicks is pretty damning imo

YES ..whilst some people maybe " appointed " from on high, leaders often "emerge"  from the ranks.

I don't know who the Hammers captain is supposed to be ?...   but another term like this one might see JWP getting the nod.

Agreed. Many past situations have shown that good chances are often missed . Despite the  misunderstood criticism he took at times

Rory Delap had devastating long throws that were seldom used properly by Saints but when he, Beattie and others moved to Stoke

they wreaked havoc against opposition defences.

TBF, I think Delap changed his technique at Stoke. I seem to recall his throw-ins for us were, although long, also quite looping, giving time for defenders to counter, whereas at Stoke they were whipped in much flatter and faster. Perhaps that was a coaching issue?

Looks like Ward Prowse`s move back to the premier league has not made the slightest bit of difference to his England chances

Not his fault that Southgate is stupid though.

Henderson and Phillips included though. Absolutely ridiculous.
