He’ll have Prem suitors in summer, either on loan or permanent deals. If nothing else he’s exactly the kind of player one of the promoted sides should be looking at.

Why would he give up earning £100k+ per week to play as a right back in the Championship?

It's a fair question, but I think that there are scenarios where he could end-up at Saints next season:

  • He will be 31 years old this year and while he has never been a player that has relied on pace, age does start to become relevant
  • This year has been a wasted season to date, which must be frustrating for him. Dropping down a league and playing every game would probably be attractive (particularly as he is getting older - see point above)
  • Southampton is his spiritual home
  • If West Ham want to get rid, they may pay a large chunk of his wages if allow him to go on loan
  • I can't see him moving as right wing back, but somewhere in midfield would probably work

I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see him put on a Saints shirt next season, although there are plenty of variables that may prevent it happening. Still, it would make a nice change to have JWP from West Ham to Saints rumours in the transfer window instead of the usual Danny Ings ones .....

Move on. This is exactly the type of transfer we don’t need, unless he comes to us on a free, WH pay at least 50% of his salary and we’ve got players that are deemed better to start.

Yep, we need pace and raw physical power. Love JWP but far too many lightweight players already.

He’s clearly a far, far better player than Smallbone and would be a class above most midfielders in the Championship. You’d be nuts not to want him but he won’t be coming back whilst we’re a league below. I’d want someone more physical along side him but you don’t just need big cloggers to get out of the Championship.

Fuck off with JWP. Later on, in some distant future. He can get his applause.

For now, however, he was our captain. Team is relegated on his watch. He should have stayed and showed some character. For me, captain goes down with the ship. You accept that when you accept the armband.

No hard feelings. I’m sure he is a thoroughly likeable bloke. But couldn’t get out of here fast enough when we went down. He chose to warm benches for mid-table premier league clubs. Fine.

Move on.

This post reads like nothing but hard feelings to me. If you only accept players who derive their morals from 17th century naval warfare, you’re going to have a pretty small squad.

Hate to break it to you but the Captain of a 21st Century professional football first team is not accountable or responsible for the club in the same way as whatever Lord Nelson or Long John Silver figure you have in your head.

I’d prefer Long John Silver in the middle of the park, he’d be more aggressive than Prowse. I know he’s a bit one footed but, then again, so is Prowse.

Nope the skates are, he counted their FA Cup final as one of his favourite days, was a mascot and season ticket holder for them and counted Andy Awford as his favourite player.

Just because he worked here doesn't mean he's not still a skate cunt

I agree with your post in the main, we saw that at Hillsborough, and he won’t be cutting his pay by 75% next season to re-join us. Would definitely need pace and power around him if he did, which is the priority to get into the core of the spine over the summer.

I'd have him back in a heartbeat - waltzes into our side. Let alone in the champ.

If he isn't getting game time at Spam under the new manager he will surely leave, and surely we'd be in the conversation in that case - would all come down to cost. But if there is a chance he's available this summer and interested in a return, and we then ignore it, then we really are run by donkeys imo.

Can't argue with that logic.

I think we need to move forwards and forget the likes of him and Ings..

Now is a real opportunity to properly reset, clearout the average players who haven't performed for a few seasons now i.e Stephens, Smallbone.

And bring in a bit of height and presence, instead of having powderpuff weaklings..... get some absolute units in! Tough tackling bastards!

Is he still one goal behind Beckham’s free kick record?

I believe so. I don't think he has one since leaving Saints. (curse?)

man, at the time it looked like he was going to smash the record.

I wasn't convinced by this argument so I went to find video evidence in the only derby match he's ever been in, under the theory that out of our four goals without reply he didn't score or assist any and didn't even celebrate once.

I invite my fellow posters to watch this damning footage for themselves and make their own judgement as to whether we were harbouring a dirty skate in our XI that night.

You realise he's not an eight year old child anymore, don't you?

Those were the day when our players were all moving and passing forward, including JWP ! But now, even RM has gone, we are still playing Russball. What a contrast.
