With Wilcox as director of football we'll absolutely be trying to sign kids from Man City.  I'd imagine that's half the reason why we got him in the first place - he'll have good knowledge of both them and other players in the same age range.  I don't really have a problem with that as long as we don't expect all of them to have an instant impact and maintain their form over the course of the entire season.  We'll need some decent championship experience as well but as long as we keep that in mind then I don't think it's a problem.

Anyone who expects our policy to massively switch is going to be disappointed though.

I'd still expect us to target young players, but I'd be pretty pissed if that is our single focus once again. We have be much more balanced in our approach in this window, I'm not against signing talented young players, but we need to make sure they're supplemented with 'quality' experience. (not just Theo/Moi experience).

There was an admission that the club got the balance wrong in the summer so I'd be totally at a loss if we lose our heads on that one again.

Although, Napoli are chucking in £35m bids for Max Kilman, so...

Napoli would be a good club for him, although I saw him wandering around Ocean Village on Saturday looking fairly happy - Giving up the delights of Banana Warf for the sights of the Naples coastline is going to be a really tough call for him.

Ripped from the Sports Witness Story.

There's no way we've just given a new year long contract to Caballero to let Charly go.

I suppose we'll have a lot of clubs trying their luck until the end of August.

Seriously odd that our only links so far this summer have been with Swansea or Man City players.

Not really. As soon as we got relegated the media lost interest. They’ve got the 20 teams they want to gossip about, we ain’t one of them anymore.

Very true off to the Naples Coastline myself next week slightly better than Weston Shore where I would go regularly with my mum in the 1940s.

Although Naples itself is rather 'edgy' (to say the least), that part of Italy is absolutely stunning

We have given Caballero a contract to be a third choice GK, because he is a respected guy who by all accounts is a very good character around the squad and an experienced voice to our young no1.

I am absolutely certain his contract had absolutely nothing to do with Alcaraz.

Besides, probably 80% of our first team squad have no idea where they will be on 1st Sept so giving out contracts linked to others would be even more bizarre.

Leicester are skint debated to the eyeballs. Saints are in a miles better position than them , just because little has been announced yet.

Do you seriously think Joe Shields would leave Man City for a no hope Club. I swear to god some of this is far too complicated for bedwetters like Dman.

For the millionth time the reason last season was fucked up was Joe Shields walking out on us after 3 months leaving an ill prepared Rasmus in charge of recruitment. That was not going to be his job last season.

But he was here for the summer transfer window where we fucked up the two crucial GK and striker positions, right?

Alcaraz signed.a contract in January.

His agent can fuck off.

It's been said a million times - the only relevance of a long or recent contract is that gives us strength on the fee. That said, I'd be disappointed if this kid wants out so early. He's a terrific player who'd rip up the championship imo.

Yep. I'm not sure that Shields going was a bad thing. He made a mess in the summer by putting our faith in loads of untested kids, and didn't get us a striker.

And In September the club will tweet Happy 42nd Birthday to a player for the first time (presumably) ever...

Rumour was we had strikers lined up but Semmens fucked up the negotiations

Summer was a shitshow all round

Rumours... who knows where the truth lay though. Regardless of the striker situation, Shields signed loads of kids and left us well short of what we needed to survive.

Yep, it was a shit show though.

Any news on who the starting GK will be this season.

Are we sticking with Bazunu?

nothing said yet. It's a little early for Martin to commit to a keeper. McCarthy may move, leaving the path completely clear for Baz, but who is buying? Who knows, maybe someone comes in for Baz.

Disagree.  Clubs have every right to keep players under contract.

Sure, but it rarely ends well. Sadly he'll go if he wants to, and a sensible bid comes in. That contract will help us get top dollar.

I can’t see McCarthy starting for a team looking to play a possession based system tbh

So the rumour is Chelsea are invoking their buy-back clause on Tino (£35m) and then letting us have him on loan for a year. Like that rumour.

Yes please - that’s a pretty preferable outcome, I think.

How? Shields was there the entire summer. January is last-chance saloon recruitment, and hardly any teams manage to buy their way out of relegation at that point, regardless of who is doing the scouting.

Would say in the summer the talent ID was largely good. We signed some very good players like Lavia and ABK and clearly identified Gakpo, Ramos, Colwill and Hojlund too before they became much more widely revered.

Not sure on the roles and responsibilities but maybe its too simplistic to say Shields did a poor job if his role was to identify the players and then pass it to the owners/Semmens to actually get deals done?

Takes a good structure to get things done and noticeable that when Russell Martin had his big rant about Swansea's poor Jan window he specifically said the head of recruitment there couldn't have done more and was as frustrated as everyone else.

Usually there are multiple factors and its too simplistic just to blame one person.

Yeah, I wasn't seeking to apportion blame to Shields. Just counter the idea that his departure is what fucked our season. It clearly wasn't.

On the other hand, I think we should probably avoid contorting to pat ourselves on the back over identifying the likes of Gakpo, Ramos, Colwill etc. Starters for Benfica, PSV and an extremely highly rated England youth international hardly count as undiscovered gems.

I never really bought into that arguement either, all your really saying is that Ings did all the goal scoring, much like Beattie used to. Adams has never really looked decent playing alongside anyone else. He's a hard worker with terrible finishing, at PL level. He's not specialised for some sort of supporting link up role, his weaknesses are just made glaringly obvious when he's relied on for goals.

Therein lies the rub. We're not in the PL. I think HCDAJFU in the Championship. Much like some of our other PL failures, which many are ready to dismiss before they kick a ball against weaker opposition.

To be fair, I don't think you can really have a go at any fan writing off almost any player in our squad given the shit show that was last year. Hopefully a few of the lesser performing ones will give us a nice surprise. Personally I'm hoping that Adam Armstrong can find some form and also that Edozie will be decent in the championship.

What on earth are you rambling on about. Who has said we need to initiate a 'rushed fire sale'? Like I said, there's a fine line between holding your ground and demanding (lets be honest above market value) top whack for your players and accepting a little less to get them out the door quicker, so you don't miss out on targets.

Having an extra £5m in your bank account is no good when you've lost all your other targets to promotion rivals and have a gaping hole in your midfield.

As it happens, I've no issue with us selling every single player in our squad if we needed to, but with every day that goes by, we're missing out of potential targets.

I like the way you operate. Tell you what, your house, I don’t know it’s value, say £400,000 I will give you £180,000, and we will shake hands on it.
