People laughed at me when I mentioned Smallbone wanted to leave. It was even mentioned in the media again after I mentioned it. I don't want to have the last laugh as I'd rather he stay.

Sheffield United chairman Yusuf Giansiracusa is awaiting a medical update on Smallbone before the club (Sheff Utd) launch a 2nd bid of £10m for Smallbone.

An incoming bid doesn’t mean the players pushing to leave

I agree with you 100% about improving the physicality and height of our team, especially as this is particularly need in the championship

Been lacking for a couple of seasons but will continue to be exploited this season. Tracing their first goal, Barnes had all the time to chest it and bring it under control without anyone rattling him, he must have thought it was a training exercise.

Free headers in the box, and Sheff Weds previously covered and no further comment needed.

Our last promotion had Fonte and Jos at CB.

Agree, you should go on Twitter/X and tell him, #fuckoff#

I prefer a bit of club call pal. Ok you run up a massive phone bill and still hear a LOT of words that ultimately say fuck all but there's  nary an aggravating # in sight.

Why would we sell smallbone for 10m? if it was 30m I guess I could get it.

He’s only got a year left on his contract. Given that, £10m is a very decent price for a Championship midfielder, especially if the club feel they can use that money to bring in someone they prefer.

There has been some noise around Smallbone but some of it could be his agent playing the media to negotiate a new contract.

Why would smallbone leave? He's finally found a concrete place in the team he has worked his whole life to play in.  Looks like he could play a role in Martin's system, and leaving to another similar sized club could hinder that. It's not like man city are sniffing around.

Actually feel it would be madness to let Smallbone go for that. The one shining light so far this season. Holds the ball superbly well. Have been missing that since Romeu. Get a good’un alongside him and midfield will be very much stronger.

I’d hope we keep him too, but I’d understand the logic if he went and we used all the money to bring in a proper replacement to fit Martin’s mould. Hope it’s all just agent agitation but any player is going to sit up and listen if/when a PL club come in with an offer. £10m is also an awful lot of money to spend at this level, the Championship record for a fee spent is £16M.

ahh i thought he had 2 years left like Tella. Noise makes more sense now.

I just think it’s much better to have the player than the money, sorry. And I rate Smallbone very highly. Excellent ball retention and seems to like the club. In an age of mercenaries it’s good to have as much affinity to the club as possible in the team. We need to get a settled team as quickly as possible and avoid too much change. And smallbone is a keep for me. We have enough cash from elsewhere.

To be clear, I don’t disagree with that. Just saying I could potentially see the logic if it enabled Martin to bring in someone he prefers. As it is I think Smallbone fits the system well and I reckon the manager would be reluctant to lose him.

I get the impression Russell Martin is keen to keep Smallbone, I’d certainly want to keep him, he’s been very impressive this season already.

Romeo Lavia - For Liverpool, just keep upping the asking price. They’ve had weeks to get this deal done. It would be very amusing to see Chelsea buy both Caceido and Lavia. 😂

I think we set ourselves up for trouble yesterday before we started.  Our defence isn't the greatest as we know but to have 5 attacking predominantly attacking players in AA, Tella, Edozie, Alcaraz & Armstrong was asking for it defensively.  In midfield only Smallbone is competent defensively.  They needed Charles instead of Stu imo.  It's been difficult enough when JWP & Lavia have protected the back 4 so going with just Smallbone as good as he's been this season was naive at best.  Really surprised at Martin as I think he's made a really good start overall but that was a big mistake and it was no surprise we conceded so many.  Hopefully lesson learnt !

Smallbone like Tella was deemed surplus to requirements last year. No surprise that either would be open to a Premier League move.

Would it be that big a deal? A nuisance yes, bit of a hit to our collective egos, but both could be replaced.  Tella from existing resources and presumably a wedge straight to Swansea for Grines, to replace Smallbone.

Losing Alcaraz is way more concerning.

Tella.. Who scored a bucket load last year, is a champion in this division, who was in the team of the year.

Yes, just let him go, no drama...

Righto

Bit disappointing if we ended up selling Smallbone and 10M wouldn't be worth it even if he ended up walking for nothing next season.  He's tailormade for Russell Martin and will be even more valuable for us if we play him in a more advanced role.  Unless he's kicking up a stink then I'd tell him he's staying - hopefully a run in the team and a shout of promotion will convince him to sign a new contract.

No I don't mean I want him to go, for all the reasons you point out. Great player a real asset.

We may have to face him going if high enough bids come in. Hopefully the price tag set will put off potential buyers.

Either Smallbone’s agent is trying to get us to up our contract offer or Smallbone’s starting position isn’t guaranteed with Charles/Downes/Alcaraz. Given his comments in pre season, it sounded like he was really happy to be breaking into our first team, one of our own etc

But we are not going up anyway are we you told us multiple times on the match thread yesterday!

There will be quite a few going yet and I’m waiting until end of window to see what our squad is for Martin to try and get us there.

Nobody knows our finances but Lavia, JWP and ABK going may mean a few incomings if SR deem we can.

Any noise about Smallbone is surely agent angling to get him a better saints contract rather than him wanting to go. It’s to be expected in this situation 100%.

His small gesture of clapping applause he made to the Northam in first half when taking his first corner and in response to the positive ovation he received did not seem fake appreciation.

Similarly all of a sudden Che looks devastating when either a new or improved contract or a transfer is on the cards m. Not saying he wasn’t trying before but clearly both players have additional motivation to put the performances in now.

ABK out and Holgate in seems most likely. Unless this Bristol CB is preferred? Not sure about Holgate.

Interesting comment:

Although Everton are open to a loan, their preference is to sell.

Yes, I bet they do.
Tells its own story.

I reckon he’s happy. Probably just agent talk to maybe get more clarity on playing time or increase in wages.

Mason Holgate. 👀

Am I right in thinking that West brom played him as a rb last time he was in this league? Could he be the kwp replacement? Looking on their forum, he played really well for them and they would have loved to have signed him, permenently.

JWP, Smallbone, Adams...probably the three players who have looked the best for us in the opening two games and the only ones that look like leaving anytime soon.
