Is there a scenario where Tall Paul can be fitted into our new style and is effective against the low block many teams will play against us?

He ought to be good at both defensive and offensive set pieces too (and we’ve just employed an ex Brentford/Arsenal set piece specialist coach)

Agree, gives us a different focal point. I'd start him against Gillingham on Tuesday and give the lad a chance to show what he can actually do

He’s had all summer in training to do this and still can’t get a kick in a pre season friendly.  He’s shite mate.  Even his highlight real on YouTube is hilariously shit.  Sooner he’s out the club, the better.

I agree.
It seems amazing that someone at the club (Rasmus?) was allowed to stump up £18m on such a waste of space.

I’m surprised more hasn’t been said about size and physicality. We are a small, lightweight team. All very well bringing in a set piece coach but without more aerial presence it is useless. We wasted most corners on Friday.

Expand

Yes. Even if we're going to have very high possession all the time, we can't afford to leak goals from corners and free kicks launched into the box.

Even Man City, the possession masters, have a decent aerial capability. Two good centre backs, often a nominal centre back at left back, Rodri (who si very dangerous in the air) and then Haaland as well.

We could really use a midfielder or striker with aerial power to help the CBs at set pieces.

Lots of effort and energy to a point, I actually forgot he was playing in the second half. I keep willing him to do well but he remains ineffective. Still hoping he turns a corner.

Expand

I was specifically watching him on Friday. He was either slow to get back or standing in an offside position so the midfield couldn't pass directly to him and his runs were blind alleys that would have been cut out. As Saint86 said, if we're going to be crossing as much as we did against Wednesday, Tall Paul would be a better option. The luxury is AA who surely has been given enough chances. That's twice I've seen him play against Wednesday within 12 months and twice he's been the worst player on the pitch.

All I know is being a fan of our club is better than being a fan of Ajax.

They look like they will lose this window - Tadic, Kudus, Alvarez, Timber and Bassey among others and only really bought Borges so far, they must be screwed financially now they aren't in the champions league this season.

Expand

Ajax have to balance the books and get the wage bill down. After Overmars left/was sacked (after sending ‘dickpics’ to female employees) Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar took over and invested poorly. Besides that they also appointed Alfred Schreuder as a replacement for Erik ten Hag and sacked him mid season. Then appointed Johnny Heitinga as caretaker who didn’t do much better.

They now have former Arsenal scout Sven Mislinstat (spelling) as technical director who has to sell players and buy cheaper players as replacements.

I have reservations about AA as our main centre forward but there's no point selling him for £8m. We need some squad depth

Reservations The bloke is a complete waste of space? If some fool is prepared to offer £8m for him I'd grab it before their alcoholic haze clears. Squad depth is one thing but this bloke is below sea level.

I really don’t want Prowsey to leave at any price.

We’re only a few signing’s away from a very good Championship team that could end up with a ton of points whilst playing great football.

I agree. A few weeks ago I’d have been alright with him going but he’s a class above at this level, expecting Lavia and a few others together but keep JWP and making a few additions and we could have a very exciting season

Forgetting our biases for a second, I don’t think he’d be happy at somewhere like West Ham. For a start he’d be a Moyes signing and he’s very likely to be gone by November.

Secondly, West Ham in my opinion will struggle next year so he’ll be in another scrap as opposed to winning games with confidence week in week out.

Its Premier League, a big pay rise and European football.

If they agree a fee with Saints of course he will go.

No “of course” about it. There may yet be far more attractive offers. West Ham is toxic

Question is, will he be our "Mark Noble" by rejecting West Ham....Time will tell.

Expand

It’s a good comparison to be fair. Noble is a bit of a hero at West Ham a good player got them but in reality never going to get a move to a better club so stuck with them. Ward Prowse is the same he might get a move to a premier club but he’s only going to swap us for another club whose goal every season us to stay up and will eventually go down. Unlike lavia who will go to one of the worlds biggest clubs expecting to win things and play champions league football

People underestimate what a good footballer he is. It's all in the first touch. His is first class. Grimes may well replace him and he may be considered a decent player it this level, but he isn't in the same class.

I thought Scamacca was made for the Prem and was just the player we needed. I guess I was wrong, although he started ok and then injury wrecked his season after xmas. West Ham seem to make a habit of spending big on oversees talent that doesn't work out (they are not the only ones).

Like with Downes, I thought they'd give him a second season to show he has what it takes.

I'm sure Moyes is using Scamacca as an example of why signing a player like JWP makes more sense than 'gambling' on talent from another league.

Does anyone else feel awfully bad for Bree? He was by all accounts a important part of that Luton side heading for promotion and joined a team going the opposite way. sure he got a good pay rise and 2(?) games of premier league footy but hasn’t even been in the squad since, feel like Jones royally fucked him.

Let's face it, Jones royally fucked us all! I still get a nasty twitch when I see his name.

Same - thought he looked cut out for the prem. Italians rarely seem to do well in England for some reason.

Same. Was watching the Leeds v Cardiff game yesterday and they mentioned that Jones has been in the running for the Cardiff job. I had to go and have a lie down in a darkened room…..

Surely this is his perfect job, he could get to live in a small welsh mining village with a local girl and be a football manager?

If that’s correct then he’s off. They’ll eventually pay the £35M - which FWIW is scandalously low for someone with his length of contract, experience, ability and attitude.

Fair price, but I would rather keep him.

I think the club are being fair to a loyal player.

£35m feels like a good price for JWP to go with our blessing but only if it translates to getting someone like Downes or Grimes, plus Piroe, plus a decent CB,. And maybe a keeper to get rid of McCarthy. Otherwise I'd always prefer a player to the money in. Not sure West Ham is a great move for him, but feels about his level.

West Ham and Ajax are negotiating the price for Ajax player Alvarez. West Ham have offered 34,5 million euro, Ajax want 39. Player has agreed terms and the clubs are likely to finalize the deal today.
