The first one gets given now. I don’t think it was deliberate but it hit his arm and that it is. The second was stupid. First he held his shirt collar and then he hit him. An international player, a Premiership player, should never, ever do something so stupid. But we didn’t lose because of these penalties. We lost because we have virtually no goal threat.

Without the penalties we would've won 1-0 🤷‍♂️

that wasn’t a bad game when you look at what’s followed. id rank this and forest as worse than leicester. but that’s just me…

Think Forest was when I gave up the ghost this season. Club needs a re-set. Re Leicester losing Bertrand so early on didnt help but I'm not taking her again

We can all agree how bad these players are, how far the club has fallen but i cant be the only person who spotted that the lines for the offside in the lead up to the first penalty were clearly wrong. They marked the attacking players foot when his body was massively leaning forward and a long way past his foot.

Unfortunately the VAR cant be blamed for the second penalty as what are they going to do, i dont think there is any part of the rules that says they can bring the ref to look at how much of a prick he has been for giving a penalty like that, they look and have to say no clear and obvious error but you have embarrassed yourself almost as much as the saints players there ref!

I was actually looking forward to watching us tonight. I thought, naively, I could watch in relative comfort as we scored 2 or 3 goals, had a look at some of the players and assess our chances of staying up. In all honesty neither penalties should have stood, the first being a really obvious handball in the build up and the second one was just silly, but that's not the point. We couldn't even open up second division Grimsby and we're hoping to beat Premier league teams ??!!

What a shambles we have become but like many people I've just become numb to it. Luckily I'm old enough where it doesn't bother me like it used to but we're in for a few more years of shite by the look of things.

I’ve been to some embarrassing Saints games in my life, but that’s probably the biggest upset I’ve ever seen. Grimsby fucking Town.

This whole team can get in the fucking bin, the lot of them, and the Spanish Nathan Jones he can get fucked too. To think some people are stupid enough to believe we’ll just bounce back up at the first attempt.

Seeing the teamsheet I saw 11 players who hadn't played as a team together, picked because it was their turn in a bloated squad rather than due to any quality, with morale through the floor. They were playing for a manager who was brought in to shore up a defence, who was part of two failed regimes, and has vastly less experience than the people we got shot off. A manager that doesn't pick a team to give the best chance of a win.

I figured Grimsby might have picked a side familiar with each other, with lots of commitment and who were up for it.

Not having read the comments, perhaps we peppered their world class goalkeeper, only to concede to two of the unluckiest of goals. But having watched plenty of this disjointed group of clueless wonders, I doubt it. Instead I went to a local game and had much more entertainment. I recall Stockport and Tranmere games, so happy I dodged watching this one.

Look on the bright side fellers, we’ve got the training pics to look forward to with everyone smiling :) they really love him and are playing for him now.

The clubs media department really fucks me off.  Emails, YouTube, Instagram the works, peddling that 'all is rosy' at the club and the players still think they can 'turn it around'. Do they really think the fans are that stupid? I get the fact that they have a job to do, but ffs, get some reality and context, stop treating the fans like fools.

You seriously thought it was going to be a 2 or 3 goal cake walk?

Difficult to give ratings as such. So a few things I picked up on:

McCarthy didn’t have anything to do bar try and save the penalties.

Lyanco was poor. Orsic was non existent, probably still concussed. Armstrong and Mara, I mean, what do they actually do? Aribo excellently putting in a shift of moving sideways with little else.

JWP and Walcott made us a lot better after they came on. Perraud was the first player to grab the ball out of our net after the penalties and run back to the halfway line and try to gee the players up. DCC, enthusiastic, vocal, took his goal well; but stupid with the penalty (have just seen the whack). Djenepo did ok. Ballard looked half decent and actually showed some fight and urgency, would rather he got a few more minutes over the likes of Armstrong.

Was surprised it took us ten minutes after the second goal to make any subs.

I'd been going a couple of years when I got my first taste of being done by lower league, 72/73ish, losing at home to Wrexham, tough to take at the time. Thank fuck we didn't draw them in the cup this year!

Is it really too much to ask that a group of obscenely well paid professional athletes could - just for once - manage to actually win a game they are expected to win?

We can somehow turn it on against City and Chelsea, but when it comes to actual 'winnable' games we just consistently shit the bed and hand it to the opposition on a plate. It's quite bizarre.

You make a good point. Having better individual players is one thing, but you still need to be a good team. Pretty much every time we have made wholesale changes, the side has looked like a bunch of guys that have never played together before. Which is exactly what they are. We look shit. We always struggle.

If you don't want to receive that kind of glass half full information, don't fucking follow them then. Simple.

Well if Wrexham 74 is a metaphor for this season we're fucked. On my 16th birthday Saints beat Everton and were 4th in the league. By the time I did my O Levels we were relegated.

As we're 3 divisions above them and at home why wouldn't I expect us to score 2 or 3 goals ? I think 2 goals at home to Grimsby should be fairly realistic.

I have to say I was pretty much hoping for the same, and wanting a clean sheet as well,  which would've given us a bit of confidence going into the weekend.  After 30 minutes though you could see that we just weren't going to win the game, and when they got the second penalty you sort of knew it was game over.  I can't remember the last time we scored 3 goals in a game, but initially I was hoping that it would've been tonight.

Just when you think we can’t sink any lower, we really are the gift that keeps on giving. The last 5 years have been a complete waste of time! Nice  one everyone involved with this latest  shower of shite, how can a club of our size get worse year on year, dismissing the cup instead of playing our strongest team and maybe gelling for Saturdays game. The poor little lambs mayb a bit tired I guess, hard work just keeping fit all week and wondering which new car to buy or which gold course to play next. We are rudderless as usual , no direction no ambition .
Congratulations to The Mariners, a club I watched against Eastleigh not so long ago, all the  best in the next round.

Please can someone answer me this…

Were a team who’s bottom Of the league, on a drought of goals and confidence is rock bottom. We play a team from L2 (a chance to get a few goals and a big win) for a chance to gain a spot in the 1/4’s of the FA cup, and we make 9/10 changes and play a load of reserve shite.

It doesn’t make sense. It really doesn’t.

I’m not sure how many more chances they are going to get but, Djenepo, Lyanco, Armstrong and co have proven they’re not good enough for our team. Why waste time giving them game time.

Ridiculous team selection.

I said it in the build up, we should have played the team that was starting Saturday. Score a goal, build some momentum and cohesion and maybe have a bit of feel good before the weekend.

We’re now on the back of another very poor result and morale must be further dented.

If the logic was to rest our best then they had better come out fucking flying on Saturday and not stop until 90+ or they’re subbed.

If you want the reason for tonight look at the front 2 .

Armstrong spent more time hiding wide on half way line. Mara  trying to nutmeg deep right we had no outlet no movement . No threat.

Until we instruct the forwards to stick between the width of posts we will never score from open play.

Djenepo was one of the few positives tonight. Given how bad armstrong and elyounessi were I can understand that choice. Making 9 changes though was excessive.

Djenepo is a fucking terrible footballer. I’m convinced he’s pulled some Ali Dia type scam for us to have brought him.

Agreed. Showed some urgency.

He tries to make things happen and has that pace to threaten. He falls over, often looks clumsy, but he actually far more effective than say Edozie, who is slightly (though not greatly) tidier, but never actually gets that cross in.  Not a high bar though.

Players take the rap for me.  They can produce against Chelsea twice and Man City but not against anyone else despite having had three managers.  Blame lies with them and there's no more excuses - they got the guy they wanted and still fail to beat a league fucking 2 team.

TBH once we go down I'm not sure I'm really that bothered whether any of them stay or not although I will say Djenepo is exempted from the criticism - he was about the only one who looked like he gave a shit.
