Saints 1-2 Grimsby: Match Thread

I estimate we had some players out there tonight on over £60K per week being beaten by others on £3K per week.

What an absolute disgrace

If you want the reason for tonight look at the front 2 .

Armstrong spent more time hiding wide on half way line. Mara  trying to nutmeg deep right we had no outlet no movement . No threat.

Until we instruct the forwards to stick between the width of posts we will never score from open play.

Expand

Armstrong is a complete and utter waste of space as a central striker.

I was hoping Mara would make a claim for the striker spot, but he only seems keen on winning the nutmeg competition

Just shows the complete inability of the board to manage our managerial situation and highlight how out of their depth ankerson and semmens are. Why did they rush in appointing selles to the end of the season so quickly. They didn’t need to. And now any u turn is going to look even worse.
how can a board make such a clusterF*+k is beyond belief.

As for tonight, a strong manager won’t select many of those players for the rest of the season.

Djenepo is a fucking terrible footballer. I’m convinced he’s pulled some Ali Dia type scam for us to have brought him.

I reckon he has a identical twin that scored that wonder goal up at Brammall Lane a couple of seasons back. But they then switched and we've been been stuck with the headless chicken twin since.

Outrageous and in your time of need as well. I grabbed a packet of chocolate digestives on the way to the match. In case it snowed obviously 😉

I eat nearly all of them on the way home. This bloody team is going to kill me.

Just home from the game. Just watching Mara and AA in particular was painful. 13million Mara jogging about, trying cute little touches. It was hard to watch.

Orsic, what a disappointment this guy has been. Non-existent. As other have said, JWP, KWP and Walcott only one who come out with any credit at all - but in context. You’d surely expect them to.

TJ made a fair and worrying point on the radio after the game. Who do we have in the squad who is equipped for championship football? It’s fast, it’s physical, and at times it’s nasty football. Who do we have in there to work with. I think we will not only go down, but I think we will really struggle in the championship

I’m genuinely confused about how poor Orsic has been. Has George Weah been on the phone again as surely that’s not the world Cup semi-finalist?

Disappointed for Theo as was only bit of class all game and for me the VAR frame used was after the ball was kicked. Although he did piss me off by laughing and joking about it like it doesn’t matter.

Less said about the centre backs the better. What were they thinking?!

Posted

Personally after that display I do not want to see Djenepo, Mara, Armstrong and Lyanco anywhere near the pitch ever again.

no idea why so many fans were clamouring for Orsic, everytime he has stepped on the pitch he has looked absolute wank too.

I think I have finally reached the acceptance stage where I am pretty numb to the constant shit we have to endure.

So why would any player give a shit the clubs policy is sign move on for profit ASAP.

They know within 18 months they won’t be at club why would they care?

Tonight Ballard showed them up why? Does Mara, Orisic, Diallo ,Armstrong, Aribo or any of new signings give a shit if we go down they won’t be here

Perraud was the first player to grab the ball out of our net after the penalties and run back to the halfway line and try to gee the players up.

We are so fortunate to have him here. He's scored four goals don't you know.

Exactly, had the game on at work and people seemed surprised I didn’t expect us to comfortably win. There’s just nothing there from the whole squad.

He’s really not.

I think Orsic and Elyounessi lack pace to be successful in England, but they’re significantly better than Djenepo who has no technical skill whatsoever.

the true reality of the situation is all of our attacking options simply aren’t good enough.

But they weren’t. That’s the thing. Grimsby did nothing to deserve a win and were gifted two goals plus multiple other decisions. We scored three goal but only one was allowed to stand.

No need to do any u turn.  We are relegated, that's not Ruben's fault. Let him see over this shit show to the end of the season and then part amicably.  Serious reset needed in the close season to sort this mess out.

Well that was terrible. Good news is our league position improved. Beat Leicester 3 0 and we climb two places. As if that will happen.

We now know why DCC and Orsic aren't being selected. Similarly Alcaraz needs to pass the ball forward quicker.

Plus in 10 mins Ballard look worthy of more time.

Not a lot of hope for Saturday but hey might as well enjoy the Prem for a few more games.

That’s not the point. There was something not right about the way that this game was managed. A referee who was out of his depth and trying hard to impress. VAR whose only purpose was to examine the last incident that went their way and not the one a couple of seconds before that should have gone ours.

It’s nonsense to say he’s got no technical skill. You don’t dribble past people if you’ve no technical skill. Also scored a quality goal against city. He’s far too erratic for my liking but of the options we’ve left ourselves he was one of the few tonight to stake a claim to play again this season.

Think most will disagree with you. However, even if you were right, don’t you think it’s an issue to be relying on those small margins against Grimsby?

The ref was shit, yes, but you can see why both penalties were given (the second one less so). The headline should be we are shit! We huffed and puffed all game against a League 2 side - and our only reprieve came from a set piece. Hence the reaction on here.

There was the Grimsby handball down on the right just before their first penalty and the front of DCC’s shirt was being torn off him from ten yards outside the penalty area until both players were inside. That’s was upset DCC so much and he hardly touched their pathetic creep. The referee didn’t see the shirt pull because of his position and VAR didn’t refer him to it but everybody in the Kingsland could see it.

The second penalty was a weird one.

No issue at all with the first, clear handball from a dopey defender.

We were comfortably in control until those decisions which knocked us back. We were too narrow for the first half but improved in the second.

The fact that those jokers can actually earn 60k just shows you how meaningless transfers and wages are in the premier league as a guide to judge players

I agree - I'm scratching my head at people lauding him because I only saw him pounce on a scramble in the box which was good work but led to nothing. He wasn't given long enough to show what he could do.

Sometimes we have to accept the reality of mediocrity and it’s now becoming the norm. Watching paint dry is more exciting than the absolute dross dished up tonight. Lose on Saturday and no one will be surprised.Mouthing platitudes after that performance makes the average Saint cringe.

Please can someone answer me this…

Were a team who’s bottom Of the league, on a drought of goals and confidence is rock bottom. We play a team from L2 (a chance to get a few goals and a big win) for a chance to gain a spot in the 1/4’s of the FA cup, and we make 9/10 changes and play a load of reserve shite.

It doesn’t make sense. It really doesn’t.

I’m not sure how many more chances they are going to get but, Djenepo, Lyanco, Armstrong and co have proven they’re not good enough for our team. Why waste time giving them game time.

Ridiculous team selection.

Expand

Not sure it was reserve shite though. Most of this forum has been calling for the return of Macca, KWP, DCC, Alcaraz and Orsic. Lavia played as expected and I wasnt surprised to see Mara or AA with the injury to Che. The 3 players you've rightly highlighted shouldnt be anywhere near our team, but the remaining 8 would have been in most peoples starting 11.

Regardless of what team was selected, we should be beating Grimsby comfortably

Spot on. Let's not let our pathetic display gloss over the fact that we were on the end of some extremely dodgy decisions tonight that wouldn't have been given against the big boys like City, Utd and Liverpool. The second penalty was border line cheating by the ref.

It was more in reference to the front 4 & Lyanco at CB.

None good enough as proven multiple times. Give the new lads a run out and an opportunity to learn the role and gain some confidence.

Bravo. Your performance on this board tonight is even more embarrassing than those of Southampton’s players.

The Lyanco handball was a blatant penalty.

Caleta-Car and Orsi were both pulling each other. Orsi went down like his spine had been snapped but you can’t hit / slap someone and not expect to be punished.

Every forum has its moron and you appear to fit the bill snugly.

Expand

No need for the infantile insults.

the ‘blatant’ handball was so ‘blatant’ that nobody who was actually at the game thought anything of it.

If that second incident was a ‘strike’ then it should have been violent conduct and a red card. The reaction of Orsi was despicable.

If I had ever given either of those as penalties I would not have left the pitch in one piece. What has happened to our beautiful game?
