Hello,

My name is Patrick and I'm studying Sports Journalism at the University of Winchester. I am doing my dissertation now where I need to film a 15-20 minute documentary. I have decided to do my documentary on the Southampton and Portsmouth rivalry, and I'm going to need interviews.

I am writing here to ask if anyone is interested in being in an interview for my documentary. The questions will be about the history of the rivalry and also some history about Southampton FC so I would need some fans that truly know their club and feel passionate about the rivalry with Portsmouth.

There is no set location for filming these as I can be flexible and meet you at a location you're comfortable with, public or private.

If anyone is interested please email me at: patch.hill16@gmail.com. We can then arrange a location and time to meet, and I can answer any more questions you may have.

Thank you for reading this and please consider helping me out.

Patrick

Suggest you research the archives of the Daily Echo (they can be accessed at Southampton Civic Centre Library) and also the Portsmouth News.

The so called 'Docks Strike' caused by the 'Southampton Consortium/Consolidation of Union Men', an organisation that never existed, was a figment of a certain persons imagination, who died an early death mainly through excessive consumption of certain substances, and it was what Southampton Dockers called their counterparts at the Portsmouth Commercial Port back in November 1976 when Portsmouth Dockers reneged on a promise not to handle Brittany Ferry ships which were contracted to go into Plymouth.

Hundreds of Southampton Dockers picketed the Pompey Commercial Docks between November 23rd - 27th and it was headline news in both local papers.

There were reports that the brother of one of Saints ex goalkeepers was arrested by Hants Police who were out in force in Pompey to keep the peace

The SCUM acronym was made up after a few members of the 'notorious ' 657 squad were forced to remain stuck behind the port gates until the Dockers went home each day at the end of the picket.

Pompey fans have form on this as there were more recent reports that when Pompey were embroiled in the chase for promotion from League 2 with Northampton, their fans were lumbered with an unfavourable insult based on the so called actions of the 'Consolidated Union of Northamptonshire Tanners and Shoemakers' who apparently produced shoes for the Navy at much lower prices that workers in the Pompey naval yard.

Excellent summary.  In the late 70s into the 80s the scum label was always directed from Saints towards Portsmouth.

Fact no.1: Never have more cousins been seen in the same place at the same time as on portsea island.

Fact no.2: The toothbrush was invented in the PO postcode, had it been invented anywhere else it would have been called a teethbrush.

Fact no.3: portsMYTH is a far more appropriate moniker for the third division upstarts.

This video is a half decent watch to give you some background, I'm assuming you're planning on producing something similar without the match at the end...

Never seen this before.

Interesting.

The Pompey lad in the green shirt seems a modern version of the 657 crew.

Some other interesting things to consider.

1. There were far more servicemen passing through Southampton in most major wars eg Crimea, South Africa both WW1 and WW2 and arguably the Falklands than Pompey which is primarily a naval port.
2. There were no bad feelings between the two cities until 1960 when Saints were promoted to Divison 2 and Pompey were relegated from Division 1.
From the mid 1930's until 1960 Pompey were the dominant team on the south coast and quite a few people from Southampton and other surrounding areas used to go to Fratton Park after WW2 to experience first Division football without any issues.
3. Pompey only had a best average of 37,000 when they won of their two league titles post war in a ground that had a capacity of 50,000.
Hull City in the Third Division had a higher average.
Many of the spectators at Fratton Park were sailors.
4. Not that is of much relevance but Portsmouth was once in the County of Southampton and I remember seeing a photo of a Pompey fan spouting off about the history of Portsmouth when he had an old map showing Pompey in the County of Southampton.
5. Interestingly Gosport had a railway station before Portsmouth.

They’re all gypo cunts. Interview over.

GYPO?

I am appaled and discussed at the word 'GYPO' being used on this forum.

Hand your head in Shame.

We are Proud people from Southampton that never use the word.

I hope you are Proud of yourself.

They should be called Cackers like what respectable Southampton people call them. 😉

The imfamous meetings in London in the late 80s on Waterloo coming up against the late top lad of the 657 ‘docker Hughes’ and another victory for saints on Covent Garden where CS gas canisters were used on a pub there .. ‘The nags head‘ ..and beating spuds that day in the fa cup.

Home clashes outside and inside the joiners pub of recent history where a few pompey lads broken away from the escort from soton central made the stupid mistake of fancying their chances  and got absolutely hammered and one lad lay screaming in the door entrance with arm smashed to pieces. Their lad crispin claimed in a book a year later that they took the pub.
I can vouch the absolute opposite.. they were on their toes that day all over Southampton.. small scuffle victories reported  at the plume & feathers and in the park opposite the Angel …

After the game they were well policed out of the city ..

I’ve been to the Nag’s Head in Covent Garden a few times. I had no idea that it had such an esteemed place in Saints folklore! 🤪

That documentary was interesting, but rather depressing in its glorification of hooliganism.

I especially enjoyed the bit where the presenter described Southampton’s history as the home of international cruises then cut to an image of the Red Funnel 🤪

It actually had a capacity of nearer 60,000 at its peak but, as you say, they only ever got 2 attendances a fraction over 50k even in that golden age when they used to let thousands of locally based servicemen into the stadium for free to boost their gates. Their crowds rapidly fell away after their luck ran out in the 50s. The blue bitterness only really took a grip as hooliganism became a thing late 60s/70s and they really couldn't handle that the balance of power had clearly shifted on the central south coast.

Not to mention the infamous day at fratton park in 2004. It was the first competitive fixture in Portsmouth territory since 1987 and to add fuel to the fire the notorious saints DEF firm were at the height of their powers. Therefore every self styled hard man in Portsmouth was desperate to have a crack at Europes toughest mob

the DEF met up in southsea travelling down in a series of taxis to slip the police, it was made know to the 657 where we were no police or CCTV in sight and an great opportunity for a straightener. Despite our best efforts to find them and them knowing where the meet was no skates in sight at all so we strolled to the ground unchallenged, with the first part of the game going by without incident

it was after the game when things really got interesting. With the DEF chomping at the bit to get stuck into the group of 1000 or so skates that had gathered outside the away end the police made the decision to protect the skates and keep the away fans back for their safety to enable to skates to get home safely. When the doors finally opened and the DEF charged out what followed was like a scene from the 300. the skates lying it wait suddenly realised they were dealing with serious hooligans, several brave skates stood for a few seconds but were destroyed and  seeing the danger they were In the remainers turned tail and fled as quickly as they could. Seeing the surge from the desperate 657 to escape the police tried to restore order but in their panic to they started turn on the police bottles, bricks, one man even punched a horse such was their desperation to escape. The DEF saw job was done and retreated back under cover mixing with normal fans to avoid detection meanwhile the police concentrated on trying to contain the fleeing Pompey hordes. this ended in I believe almost 100 arrests ad imprisonments for Pompey, amazing what fear will make people do.

of course time and spin from Pompey in their usual style is that with no scummers to fight they attacked the police but those that were there know the truth. They point to arrests that day The so called mighty 657 when faced with DEF would rather fight the police and go to prison to escape than stand in front of their enemy and take their medicine

Hi Patrick,

Just to be clear, are you interested in the rivalry between Saints and the 12 years old Micky Mouse football club that currently plays at Fratton Park or the tax dodging / charity swindling / trophy cheating football club that used to play there before that?

It's just that we don't have much to do with the current incarnation.

TIA

And let’s be clear, they have morphed at least three times, with several other financial ‘stress’ moments.

That was a joke. Came to the game with a camera crew making a documentary Spouting off all this shite about us 🤣🤣

he is an absolute bullshitter. I know another story about him from a Millwall mate, him and a few of his pals were caught up in something and ended io begging to be given a pass by a few Millwall, saying they were here for trouble. They were let go only to them be seen after the game in police escort bouncing up and town shouting how millwall had shit themselves earlier at the previous location

his fairy tales in other stories are hilarious, internet seems to be littered with some of his tales of heroics but none of them seem to actually stack up with reality

Although I despise the hooliganism of the late 60s early 70s

I can still recall the first proper adult fight I ever saw. Football was peaceful and innocent in the early sixties,

we still wore woolly hand knitted hats, scarves, and took wooden rattles, and even sang 2468 who do we appreciate, as well as The Saints go marching in. However Pompey used to have a Matalo mascot dressed as a fake sailor, and he went into the Milton end near the front behind the goal. I think he refused to leave after being politely ? asked to leave. A fist fight ensued with (a docker?), and the result was Pompey Matalo with a smashed nose pouring with blood. Two coppers came running and the sergeant built like a brick outhouse escorted the them out without much fuss.

A few years after going to a game without wanting to get involved became more difficult.
