Saint_Ash Posted 3 July, 2024 Posted 3 July, 2024 We don't know the ins and outs I suppose but I guess there is a wage structure for 16 year olds and I can't imagine us breaking it or throwing thousands at them when they have only shown it at a lower level. Barsiem Posted 3 July, 2024 Posted 3 July, 2024 See what happens but I've always thought part of what made him look so good was that he was so much bigger than everyone else his age, which obviously will change as he reaches the men's game. Expand That’s not the way ‘pathways’ work mate and however tougher it might be it’s quite clear from their records theirs is more appealing than ours. I think people are stuck in a bit of a time warp regarding our academy. We aren’t the poster boys of opportunities anymore, quite a bit to do with lack of quality but there’s very little we can sit down to a under 18 year old and point towards and say ‘that can be you soon’. We’re stuck in a weird phase were we haven’t had good enough players coming through and then when we do we’re in a league situation that didn’t really call for patience and environment for them to played lots over experience. Go to another club and earn far more money and maybe have more of a pathway Expand That really isn’t true though. In the last few years some very okay players have had first team opportunities at Saints. Never in a million years would Smallbone get first team football at 3/4 of PL clubs. Tella made about 30 odd first team appearances for us, having been released by Arsenal. SAA played a few games for us, when he clearly wasn’t ready, even for Championship football. AGR has just turned 16, so to say your pathway is being blocked would be absolute horse sh*t. 1

Expand Respect your knowledge so interested to hear your expanded view on this? IMO if the goal of the academy is to produce players for our first team and subsequently generate revenue then its madness that almost all of our recent best prospects have chosen to leave the club: Miles, AGR, Doyle, JJM, Dibling initially etc. Surely whilst you need principles its a little pointless if the market then dictates that the few academy players who have PL potential end up leaving to rivals? End of the day talent has a market value and ifnwe try to undervalue them does it do us any favours? Also...re pathway comments from others, its not just about first team apps. Our use of loan moves to develop players has been absolutely abysmal for years. Aside from Tella and Smallbone who were outside of academy age anyway I can barely think of a move that has gone well for one of our top lads. Doesn't bode well for the likes of Dibling, Ballard, Meghoma and SAA if they still don't get a chance here. Its clear something isn't working right whether strategic or execution of that strategy. screechio Posted 3 July, 2024 Posted 3 July, 2024 I can remember Semmens and Crocker saying that the academy's goal was to turn out players good enough to play professionally. If they were good enough for the first team, then it was a bonus. Hopefully with the investment since SR's takeover, the pathway will be better. But I don't believe we have had a manager brave enough to do it since Poch left.

Hopefully we can convince Dibling, SAA, Meghoma at least there is opportunity here but that trust needs to be earned by the club at some stage Expand Must admit, I don't follow anything other than the men's first team but I do remember through rose-tinted spectacles seeing Walcott come on for the first time and thinking Bale was a product of our academy whereas now the pipeline has run dry. Dibling, SAA and Meghoma have been given opportunities (and SAA looked ok in pre-seasons last year) but ultimately, they couldn't make our championship side. They're nowhere near the standard of youth player hovered up by the likes of Man City and I can't see them getting much game time now we're back in the premiership. So what strategy should SR have for the academies? I got the impression Saints were closing the academy for the ultra young at my son's university in Bath, so they seem to be curtailing their reach for the youngsters. Maybe, like Brighton, we should target 15/16 year olds to nurture rather than hope for more JWPs. 1

If a young player does nothing here, has little impact on loan in a lesser league, then gets released and signs for someone much lower down the pyramid, it points almost unequivocally towards that player not being Saints standard. We loan these young players out to a variety of different clubs at lower levels, what else is it that you expect a good club to do that we’re so ‘abysmal’ at?
