Agree with everyone, sad news.  I always felt that he was like Murray Walker - probably not the best commentator but more than made up for it with his enthusiasm and excitement.  He enhanced the game whereas someone like Barry Davies always seemed a bit too negative in comparison.

RIP

Blimey - He was indeed the voice of my football for years.

His inability to fully hide his love of Spurs on the mic was a tad annoying though 🙂

RIP Sir

Chelsea according to a schoolmate of his on the radio just now.

Just heard his last ever official commentary on TV or Radio was our 0-2 win away at Chelsea on Boxing Day a few years ago. Redmond scored the last ever goal he commentated on.

He came to one of our referees meetings to give us a talk and was well worth listening to. I remember him as a man of large stature with great presence.

I can still remember his commentary for our home game against Everton on an icy pitch in 78 or 9 .  Graham Baker scored one of his trademark volleys from a cleared corner  "little Graham Baker ! ".

I could be wrong, it may have been his debut against Blackpool.

Great commentator, full of facts about the teams and the complete obosite of the commentator who did the Chelsea game last week.

Sad news. Always looked forward to Motson commentating on our matches during the halcyon days (for me) of late seventies and eighties. Looking out for him in his sheepskin coat on the gantry at the Dell. Genuinely the voice of a generation of football fans. RIP Motty!

Heh! Interestingingly enough that's the 26th time he's worn moulded studs this season.

MLG with a microphone but total legend, yes sir he certainly was. My favourite commentator of all time.

RIP Motty. Like others here I grew up with him as one of the voices of football.

Loved all his little stats, he worked so hard.

I'll never forget his minor obsession with R9s girlfriend during the 2002 WC.

"Hehehe...there's the lovely Suzanna...wearing what could be described as a Brazil yellow summer dress...."

"Err John...John...the match?"

Odd, Can't remember if it was on Talksport or 5Live on Wednesday around lunchtime.
