swannymere Posted 16 February, 2023 Share Posted 16 February, 2023 (edited) My nephew chose to support Man City from a young age. I was disappointed and dropped the occasional hint but didn’t push too hard. My brother has taken him to SMS to a few games. Today I was sent this. I don’t know wether to be happy and proud or worry about the pain he’s going to endure! Edited 16 February, 2023 by swannymere 14 2

Holmes_and_Watson Posted 16 February, 2023 Share Posted 16 February, 2023 No bad thing to face a lifetime of sporting misery at such a young age. It's character building, and will help him overcome obstacles in other areas of life. Just be sure that he doesn't develop such an underdog chip on his shoulder that he considers PE teaching in Wales.🙂 3
Saint_Jonny Posted 16 February, 2023 Share Posted 16 February, 2023 Congratulations, your nephew can spend his life having his weekends ruined and be as miserable as the rest of us. Happy days 🍆🍆🍆🍆
Tamesaint Posted 16 February, 2023 Share Posted 16 February, 2023 (edited) Well done. It is a duty to get the younger generation supporting Saints. I succeeded with my son. He will have to succeed with his ( yet unborn) children. I took him when he was about 5 years old to the Dell to see us beat West Ham 3 nil. We were in the Milton and a Jason Dodd piledriver sizzled as it hot the back of the net. Saints won a subsequent match and he came out with the immortal line " I like supporting Southampton. They always win ". Little did he know.... Edited 16 February, 2023 by Tamesaint

Farmer Saint Posted 16 February, 2023 Share Posted 16 February, 2023 (edited) My 10 year old daughter has decided to support Brighton. I asked her why and she said "Well, you don't seem too happy supporting Saints." She's fucking perceptive, that girl. kwsaint Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 I think my dad’s attitude was that acceptable clubs to support that weren’t Southampton were: Eastleigh Winchester City Basingstoke at a push
Fan The Flames Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 My son is 12 and he enjoys being the odd Southampton fan in a sea of big club followers. He was losing interest last year and I had a bout of guilt inflicting him with a 'making up the numbers club' that isn't his local club, so I said he could change clubs if he wanted. He said 'nah can't be bothered to change now'. Sums us up, he's still a fan because he can't be arsed to change.

We’re lucky just to be in this league, don’t you know. 👀🤣 (Albeit unlikely for much longer).
FarehamSaintJames Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 (edited) My girlfriend and her family are Man United, despite never being north of Birmingham. She’s been to several games with me and really enjoyed them. I’ve already made clear that if her parents one day buy our children anything Man United related it will be disposed of very quickly. There’s a clause in her contract forbidding such atrocities. 😂 Edited 17 February, 2023 by FarehamSaintJames
eurosaint Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 I’ve got grandchildren in Belgium and South Africa supporting the Saints ! They are different to everyone else as Man U shirts etc.. are predominant ! Tbf nobody takes the piss out of them so I suppose it’s just apathy 🥹

Charlie Wayman Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 Never understood the nonsensical expression "at a young age" but it is obviously a fashionable thing to say in football circles. Cringeworthy in the extreme.

badgerx16 Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 I am afraid to say that in this area I am a failure: between me and my Man City ( born & bred) wife we have ended up with children supporting Blackpool, Bolton, and Villa. Blackpool, as they were all born there, Bolton because one of our daughter's boyfriends had a ST at the REEBOK, and Villa because when our youngest was little he thought they were called Aston Vanilla and sold ice cream.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 I remember going to Swindon in league 1 with my nipper who was about 8 at the time. Driving home he had a miserable face on him. I asked him what the issue was and he said “why do you make me support Southampton, they’re rubbish “. I told him he can support his local team or the team I support, but being a glory hunter was unfulfilling. I spent the journey talking about the away days we could go on, how winning something would mean so much more, how following the city your dad came from was something to be proud of and beating the top clubs occasionally would make you happier than winning every week. When we got home he was up for it, still a saint and happier. He told the Snap Dragon about our conversation and said “it runs in the family”, her reply was “what does, being miserable at week ends?”

spyinthesky Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 I thought my lad might change allegiances but he has hung on in there and actually made me take him to Milan. I think he now appreciates that being a fan of a team with not a lot of trophies to show and more defeats in most seasons than wins can be very disheartening. However he understands that winning games against 'bigger' teams and enjoying a run of good form brings heightened enjoyment that 'big club' supporters with a sense of entitlement can't replicate. As Saints fans we often suffer misery but I try to set this against being a supporter of Rochdale or one of the teams around the catchment area of the big clubs and remain rooted in the lower Leagues. OttawaSaint Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 (edited) My son wanted the blue away shirt for Christmas. I was like "are you sure son? I've supported Saints for 42 years and in that time we've won one trophy. It'll be more downs than ups". He said he enjoys watching the games with me and it feels great when we do actually win. Would feel like cheating to get an Arsenal or Man C shirt. Ordered it straight away. Poor sod... Edited 17 February, 2023 by OttawaSaint

Many years ago we lived near Andover so that's how I became a Saints fan. My Dad and I went to the Dell as often as we could. My brother was born in Winchester and eventually he was old enough to go. He would go but he wanted a Man United shirt for his birthday. In those days (early 80s) Saints were better than Man U most seasons. We tried to reason with him but he was adamant. So late 80s rolls around, Fergie...you know the rest, trophy after trophy after trophy. Man U had just won something else so I said to my brother "you jammy bastard, choosing Man U over Saints so those years ago. But why? Why Man U?". His reply "I was born there!". Me *incredulous* "You were born in Winchester...near Southampton!!". Him *laughing* "oh well it's too late now!". Ugh!
bangkoksaint Posted 17 February, 2023 Share Posted 17 February, 2023 I ‘groomed’ my nephew at a young age when he was flirting with Arsenal. He’s now a STH and went to Southampton Uni out of choice! When we moved North my son wanted to follow the City brigade so I dug deep again………I promised him one visit to the Etihad and one City kit, after that he was on his own. The alternative was to follow The Saints and I’d buy him every kit each season and we’d go to plenty of matches. He’s now 15 and I’m not thinking about how much this has cost me!! A quick look at 11v11 website says 1-0 Swindon Sat Sept 11 2010 so that'll have been when you went. The season before it was also 1-0 (Tues 18 Aug 2009) so that'll have been the evening game Swannymere was thinking of.
