Matchday beer - Unity no more

This week saw good news but also, rubbish news about Unity Brewing Company closing its doors. Brilliant beer, best pre-match drinks near St. Mary’s by a country mile, and will be a big loss to the match day ‘experience’ and city. Thanks for the good times Jimmy and crew.

I never went in there before matches because it's the wrong side of town for us but I did regularly buy from them, both in the brewery and the newer shop on Bedford Place.

Very sad that they are closing, they made great beer and I can't help but think that having their products at St Mary's could have made a real difference. The club should celebrate local business and there's not much more local than a company which are merely an overhit Lyanco pass away from the stadium.

Agreed - very sad and a great place for fantastic beer pre match.

is there anywhere else near the ground that is even close to being as good?

In contrast, the official SFC ale remains the worst beer I’ve ever tasted!

Is Tap It brewery still going? They are around the corner and used to open up before matches so people could drink in there. Not sure if they are still going or not.

I'm a big fan of Olaf's Tun in Woolston. Not a brewery but they serve incredible beer.

It is very sad news, loads of breweries are going bust at the minute. I was in there before the match on Saturday and there was no indication that they were about to fold. Agree with the point about getting their beers into St Mary's, would have made a lot of sense. Other clubs do it and it would have really raised their profile. I'd probably go to Olaf's Tun before matches if it wasn't for the fact that their licence doesn't allow under 18s on the premises. I'm going to have to rethink my matchday routine.

Tap It is still operational but the taproom doesn't seem to open any more, strangely.

Love Olaf's, and their beer selection is indeed fantastic.

I run The Butcher's Hook in Bitterne Triangle, and we may be a good shout for your needs?

Don't tend to be able to run as many casks as Olaf's, but there's still 3 beautifully-kept options on at weekends. Local and national picks, and always top-drawer stuff.

Rob and Maz won't mind me saying it (as they've told me as much!) but our keg range tends to be more expansive/exciting than theirs, if you're not fussy about dispense type.

Well-behaved minors always welcome, too.

It's a decent option to park up this way if you want a quick getaway towards the motorways.

If using public transport (or in possession of a designated driver) you've got The South Western & Junction en route if you want a small crawl to or from the stadium.

Oh - and we're licensed for off-premises sales if you want anything draft or packaged to go.

Current selection is updated daily: https://www.butchershookpub.com/menu/
