If they rate Selles why didn’t they give him the  job before talking to Marsch?

They don't really rate him. After blowing a large part of the budget on Mad Nate, SR are reluctant to give Marsch a longer contract. It's about saving money, they believe the club is going down anyway.

We'll agree to disagree.

Saying we're five points behind is a really lazy way of looking at it. Honestly that is loads and loads of points in the position we are in.

We are miles off where we need to be, which for a rule of thumb is one-point-per-game. Even if we win the next three on the spin (dreamland) we still won't even have got to that metric.

We will win some games, but I don't see that we are winning 5 of the next 16 (plus 6 draws, bare minimum to get to 36). We can only afford 5 more defeats in a season where we have already lost 15.

To actually get to a point a game (38) that's at least 2 more draws or a win. So 4 more defeats this season, or just 3 more between now and the end? Really?

Burnley were 3 points off after 38 games but they still went down.

Three teams drop every season, we will be one of them.

You might be right, maybe we will be one of them but this idea that we’re already down is wrong, it’s bullshit, it’s simply not true.

Again, lots of talk about what we need, and how we get there, but there is at the very least 3 other teams in a very similar situation. We might be the worst team in this league but with 16 games to go, there’s no way we should be sticking our hand up and saying ‘don’t worry about us guys, we’re done, you guys fight it out’. Simply writing off the idea that we can get 5 more points than the others is madness. The idea that Leeds, Everton and Bournemouth are all picking up 36 points is only slightly less crazy than us.

It’s not rocket science is it.

We wanted him on a short term contract to help us get out of relegation, he wants reassurance that if he does he could sign a longer contract but the club probably don’t rate him that high.

In the summer Potter, Carrick plus many others would be great for us but at the moment those better targets are not available yet.

Meanwhile we go down and none of those names will touch us. Brilliant.

So unless he proves a miracle worker, the likelihood is that Saints will recruit a manager in the summer.

At that point, Selles probably won’t want to go back to his assistant role, and the new bloke will want to bring his own staff in. Selles will probably leave, despite whatever ‘potential’ he had when we brought him in.

Nice one Rasmus.

Can’t believe we’re getting Monica Selles. What does she even know about football?

gotta say saints’ management is hilariously clusterfucky

Yeah why would Carrick touch us playing in Championship !

He has only had a few month’s experience yet you think he would turn us down and we are going to approach him anyway you are not good at this despite all your practice.

Second rate B&B what do you expect

What a shambles. Seems like the club saw him as a caretaker... whether we didn't want him if we went down, or didn't want him if we stayed up isn't clear, but logic says it must be one or the other.

Selles. Crazy.

I don’t blame him!

I was relaxed when people were thinking both sides would be happy with a short contract, but clearly this was untrue.

I’ve been persuaded over the last couple of days that he’d suit our players and get us back to Ralph’s original high press, high risk style. If we go down, at least go down fighting.

It must be demoralising for Marsch to not feel that the club believe he’s the future.

i understand the pragmatic decision (if he fails, we could end up having to pay wages for Ralph, Nathan, Jesse and a new manager all at once if none get new jobs by then).

I don’t think a Big Sam or Rafa style manager would sit our players and certainly won’t give us any sort of preparation for hitting the ground running at the start of next season (especially if we’re relegated and demoralised).

Thoughts on the contract to the ends of the season? Suits both parties or is Jesse not fancying the championship if we go down? Hopefully he has the motivation to prove himself and we pull off the unthinkable. I’m thinking we will still drop unfortunately but support the appointment.

When I first saw that I thought it read ‘short-term appointment until the end of the week

A week ago I wouldn’t have been super-excited at the prospect of Marsch as manager, so I’m not going to start crying now - even if I had started warming to the idea.

And either way, at least Jones is gone.

That said, what a f***ing shambles we are. SR have invested a lot of money and there’s plenty to be pleased with, but key decisions:

Sign a striker this summer - failed

Decide if Ralph is our man - failed

Replace Ralph with a good manager - failed

Sign a striker Jan 1st - failed

Get a head of recruitment sorted - success … then they leave after 5 mins

Appoint your number 1 target as new manager- seemingly failed

Anyone get the impression our top executive(s) are utter failures?

As everything was pretty much in place for an end of the season contract, with option to extend if all goes well maybe Marsch had a lack of faith in his ability to keep us up. If went went longer term and it didn't work out then we'd have to pay him off which we have spent a fortune on Jones so I can understand the reflectance to do that.

Disappointing as I was warming to the idea and he was the best manager we could realistically have given us a small chance to get out. Not sure about Selles as he is part of the problem before so not sure how he will now be the solution.

We look very Micky Mouse at the mo.

What an absolute clusterf()ck of a club. Not unreasonable for Marsch to want some security, especially if we’re selling him this grandiose vision beyond this year.

Will cost us a lot more going down than it will giving him a few extra £££s.

I did think it was weird the media were reporting yesterday he was ‘happy’ with 6 months. Sounds like this was released from our end, to apply pressure of some sort.

Im sure the club are relaxed and confident though, absolute amateurish shiseters.

This season has been one shambles after another.

Why do we also seem to do all this stuff so publically now too? Jacob Tanswell is obviously fed info directly from the club because he was right on pretty much all of our January stuff and again broke the news of the Marsch interest. Why not keep things more in house and then not end up looking quite so shambolic?

It reads like the club think we are down - to be fair thats about the only thing they have worked out correctly this season.

Wow only weds and so much has happened this week.

Am quite looking forward to seeing who Selles picks, he argued with Mad Nat and ralph started listening to him during games and we seemed to improve (relatively).

Being an optimistic sort I expect we are seeing the first viewing of the new Mourinho (porto vintage).

Players wont want relegation, Selles wants a chance a leading a club so both groups will be highly motivated and with the new boys still amped I think we might be ok.

I dont really expect us to get anything out of the chelsea game but I do expect that the performance we see from the players gives us hope.
