That’s a massive investment at a time when financially the club must be at most risk. If they explored it a year ago, can’t see it being a real prospect while relegation looms large.

I'm starting to genuinely wonder whether Sport Republic realise that relegation is a thing

An EXCLUSIVE story on something that Saints looked into over a year ago?! 😂

I liked the Athletic when it first came over here, and have subscribed for a few years. Didn't bother at renewal time over Christmas as I feel it has gone downhill. They made a big thing of the fact they don't indulge in gossip, but have continually moved in that direction. Also, no surprise but the big clubs get more and more reporters (the two Manchester clubs must have 5 or 6 combined), their own podcasts etc. There's little value in it for fans of smaller clubs.

Would seem bonkers to leave Staplewood tbh.

I was lucky enough to have a tour last year, and despite part of it being a bit dated (sports science moves incredibly quickly), they were planning on putting in a new high performance gym, with all the latest technology involved, no idea where they are with this atm.

It's still an amazing facility, and is perfect for us IMO. The only downside is the location if players want to live in London/suburbs and commute daily

The reason given is it no longer offers enough space. Must be all that stuff Jones is talking about, although hot air does tend to expand so that’s my theory…too much hot air, not enough substance and too much stuff. #genius.

Jones needs more space to wave his arms about.

To be fair, it would make sense if they ever outgrow Staplewood and need to move to look at any available land just off the M3 for any new site (Winchester way). When even average/good PL players are earning around a quarter to half a £million a month, young fellas with money like that burning a hole in their pockets want the high-life. London is really the only place that can offer that opportunity in the south and you can find a community, restaurants, etc. of most nationalities in the capital which would appeal to the better overseas players and managers (and their families).

They could live around the top of the M3 in plush Greater London and be 50 miles of straight motorway to training and 15 miles to the West End.

When I trained at The Dell a schoolboy (Tuesday & Thursday nights) we used to run round the perimeter of the pitch for a few laps and then either had a small sided game in The Dell Car Park or inside the small, smelly and dusty Gym.

Mind you we all had to make our way back & forth by bus (or by train for the lads coming up from Pompey, including the dear departed Bobby Stokes)

Much as we would have loved to train at facilities like Staplewood, quite how we have got there is another matter.

15 miles to the West End that takes an hour and half to reach by car.

Need to remember it's just not the first team, all the academy stuff happens there, all age groups going on so they need multiple pitches at the same time all year round. I'd imagine that is the issue because I have a mate who's son regularly attends there and says they have been trying to fit more pitches in, plus they need more space for like parents to park etc.  I think it was also mentioned they wanted more 3g pitches and more indoor space because of weather issues.

And the women are full-time pros now too, so another full squad training

Yep them too, all of which means you have more footballers, more coaches, who all need more of the support staff, more admin, more physios, it all just needs more and more space. Plus you have new technology like hydrotherapy pools, cryo chambers etc. which again needs more space and more infrastructure.

Surely you would have just driven there in your baby Bentley.

I remember it being mentioned on here before that we'd be better off having our training grounds somewhere next to the M3 to make it easier for most of the players living in Winchester / London.

Yes, and shot down on here as being a completely ludicrous idea...

I think these feasibility studies happen all the time and just because it's being considered, it doesn't necessarily mean the ball is going to get rolling. Nonetheless, interesting to hear that these sort of ideas are being looked at.

What will be do with Staplewood then? Make it a women's only training centre? Or do the club want all the teams in one place?

We could sell it to moneybags Bournemouth, only a 30 mile jaunt across the forest to training from their luxury abodes in Sandbanks.
