Goalkeeper nostalgia

Hi everyone,

Just for fun and for no particular reason, I put together this collage of Saints first-team keepers since 1970, approximately in reverse order of first appearance in starting XI or on the bench. Maybe see how many you can name, and post your scores (out of 44). I'll add a list of names in a week or so. (And of course let me know any mistakes/omissions!)

Now lets reorder them in terms of competence starting best top left and worst bottom right, and I have to say, even with my rose tinted glasses some of the most recent have to be in the bottom row headed towards the right hand side.

Some real plodders in that list!

When was the last time we had one of the better keepers in the league we were in? Probably none since we got promoted back to the EPL. Davis in League One definitely. Davis Championship- a bit more debateable. Davis in EPL-fuck no. Otherwise I feel we are going back to Niemi days?

Came on loan as our backup keeper when Puel was manager, didn't play a game I don't think.

Ah right thanks.  Couldn't even find him on the player archive website.

I thought perhaps he was thrown in as a red herring to see if we were all paying attention. 🤣😂🤣

Hard to believe that for 5 years we had e of the best goalies in the world playing for us -Peter Shilton.

Not a chance in hell of similar happening these days. He was just incredible, and I remember a quote from a forwad saying, you manage to beat their defence and then look up and see you've now got to beat Shilton, or words to that effect.

Eric Martin was instantly recognisable even after over 50 years ago.

We could also include Colin Clarke, David Howells and Dexter Blackstock taking over in goal after the keeper was injured or red carded. A sight we will probably never see again with 5 subs allowed

Remember when Dexter Blackstock went in goal. He didn't so much volunteer as was press ganged into it. Can't remember the opponents.  Was watching it on telly when you could see the surprise /shock and lipread his words saying....'What me, you're *******  joking !!!'

It was Newcastle away in the FA Cup. Full respect to him. He did a reasonable job when experienced pros in the team bottled it.

21 for me - funny enough I either knew them or had virtually no recollection of them. Far fewer “I can’t quite remember his name” than I was expecting.

Me too!  A couple I could describe their careers but can’t find name in my mind!

Not much help can you publish pictures of their arses, its easier to recognise them from the back when they're bending over to pick the ball out of the net

You wouldn't recognise Terry Gennoe, didn't he make a club record and keep seven clean sheets in a row? And then made blunders and cost us the Final at Wembey against Forest?

Terry Gennoe always struck me as a great keeper who briefly shone very brightly and then promptly disappeared - think he went to Blackburn for ages after us. I don’t remember being particularly responsible against Forest, more that we were completely overwhelmed after half time...
