Everton 1-2 Saints - Match Thread

Jones was very quick to praise Ruben Selles at the final whistle as can be seen right at the end of the highlights video. Must be a very good reason why he made such a public show of affection. Good too that Selles as the outsider has so quickly proved his worth in Jones's set-up, perhaps we will get he best of both worlds.

Wonder if the tactical changes after HT giving us a more attacking presence with Lavia further forward and Diallo in a holding role were down to Selles. Not all positive 'though as we suddenly became far more open at the back and the Toffees were through on our goal a number of times before we put the game to bed.

Great write up on trip advisor by the SFC media team on the hotel the team stopped at after the Scousers tried to disrupt the nights sleep 🤣

Rooms were brilliant, beds were incredibly comfy, and the blackout blinds and triple glazing... oh wow! You could literally have a firework display going on outside your window and you'd never know it. Best night's sleep we've ever had!

"In fact, the only rocket we noticed all weekend was the one James Ward-Prowse sent into the net in the 78th minute at Goodison. We'll definitely be returning again."

Does it say which hotel Saints stayed at?

Have to go up to Liverpool shortly.

Having witnessed many defeats up there that felt good!  And great, passionate support from away fans from start to end with only one nob booing a misplaced pass after five minutes.  Christ he must have felt stupid at the end.

Highlights for me were:

Lyanco (again) and DCC immense at the back

JWP a constant attacking menace

Superb centre forward performance from Adams second half holding up ball

Good, sensible subs and formation change from Jones

The key stat for me, which I endlessly bang on about on this forum, is we are averaging one goal conceded now over our last five games.  While everyone focussed on needing a striker (and we certainly do, in case Adams gets injured) our four top eight finishes were all built around conceding less than 50 goals.  Keeping this ratio going would mean we would get out of trouble

Yeah, I for one was never hinging our survival on getting a new striker but more our ability to improve the defence. We've scored the same amount of goals as Palace for example, but conceded 10 more.

Didnt see the game hence our win but how did Alcazar fair ? I see he came on in the 61st min.

I assume he was like what the fuck is happening as he dealt with the speed, agressiveness and lack of sleep/training.

Kept giving the ball away but like others have mentioned he was keen to be involved and I don't think that's a quality we should under estimate. Think it's very easy to go missing in a PL game when playing in midfield, we've had quite a few ourselves, but he was regularly in position to be an option to get on the ball and showed a desire to be involved at both ends of the pitch (enjoyed seeing pretty much every team mate trying to tell him to calm down at a corner because they were convinced he was going to give away a penalty). Little rushed on the ball but good signs.

Quiz question I pinched from Saints Archive Facebook group:

Last time Saints were trailing at half time away in the PL and went on to win the game?

Hint: It was quite some time ago.

West Ham away.  1-0 down at half time, won 3-1.  It was my grandchildrens first away game and I had to explain that it was 29 years since we had done that.

Okay, I’ll rephrase, he’s currently shit for this level. Nowhere near good enough.

Lucky we didn’t concede a second from his pathetic attempt to come and collect the ball.

Eh? If he didn't get a touch on that cross while at full stretch, two Everton players were steaming in at the back post to nod it in. End result goal kick. Funny how people see it.

Chelsea NYD 2002 4-2

If memory serves, James Beattie scored with a long-range shot in the first 3 minutes, we were 1-2 down at half-time, then played an absolute blinder in the second half (Gordon Strachan's pep talk?) with goals from Chris Marsden, Anders Svensson and one other (Brett Ormerod?).

Little snippet from The Guardian:

“It’s a brutal sport,” Southampton owner Dragan Solak said to a member of the club’s staff just after a dejected Frank Lampard had walked past in the tunnel at Goodison Park. It was also a brutal day for Everton and one it is hard to see the manager, team and board recovering from. Solak had gone to the tunnel to congratulate every Southampton player in person following their first league win under Nathan Jones.

He spoke at length to the manager and inspirational match-winning captain James Ward-Prowse as they basked in a third uplifting win of the week. The Everton hierarchy were conspicuous by their absence, having been instructed to stay away by their security advisers and therefore missing the mass protests against their mismanagement of the club. Everton players were delayed from leaving the ground after the game, also on security advice, and some were abused in their cars when they eventually departed. The atmosphere is as bad as their form and Lampard, still awaiting the striking reinforcements that Everton have needed since Richarlison was sold in July, appears to have no answers. Relegation beckons.

Nope, that was 1-1 at half time. There's even a funny video on YouTube of Christ Kamara reporting on it and he can't hear Jeff but one of the things Jeff says is "Southampton back on level terms just before half time"

Good to hear that Dragan spoke with JWP and Nathan Jones after the win.  The mood and the spirit within the club has had a massive lift on the back of those 3 hard fought victories. Hope we can now feed off this and keep the run going starting with Villa.

Absolutely amazing week for us, three wins on the bounce :) so pleased for Nathan Jones. Prowsey incredible captains performance. His first goal absolute class and then the freekick for his second - just incredible. Big credit to Che too for his part in both goals, assist and then winning the free kick. Caleta-Car top drawer at the back. Exciting to see Alcaraz make his debut too :) We March On! :)
