Havent read all the posts on the game but wonder if KWP's yellow card for 'Time Wasting' in  the first half has been commented upon.

What on earth was the Ref thinking about?

No balancing up when Pope and others were wasting time near the end?

With regard to throw ins, we arent particularly good at them whether they go in our favour or have to defend when opponents have the ball.

Newcastle where far better at this phase of the game as they were on a couple of occasions when they played swift balls from free kicks as we dozed off.

Whilst disappointed at the result, I thought it was a decent game to watch and a relatively good performance by the Saints against a side of the up, thanks to a shed load of investment.

Agreed, I thought that was very strange. Did he even warn him? Just straight got out the yellow.

Overall we did ok but our limitations in attack were exposed by missing a couple of great opportunities and they had spells of passing through us too easily when their technically good midfield players moved the ball quickly.

At 1-0 there's still a chance albeit a slim one but we've seen so many unexpected results this season that another one isn't out of the question.

Thought our support was good last night with fans either side of theirs in decent voice. Theirs was ok, but not quite what I expected.

Enjoyed Alcaraz's performance and looking forward to seeing a lot more of him. A midfield 3 with him, Lavia and Ward Prowse will be good.

Caleta Car was unfortunate in that he had no option but to make the 2 fouls he got booked for, but his defending for the goal was poor.

Djenepo was awful, Orsic struggled and looked lost at times but hoping he'll come good quickly. Maybe the cup game on Saturday will be a good one for him to gain some confidence in the team.

Sums most things up about us - he was given the hurry up more than once and obviously in the refs eyes he'd been blatantly ignored, very cheap avoidable yellow.

He most probably got it because it was Baltic out there and the ref was a bit chilly and wanted to keep running about to keep warm 🙃

Crap throw ins are mentioned every week - We are pushing onto the opposition and get a throw in, from a good position player one picks up the ball, and suddenly we are down the docks in the 70's and the shop steward is about call everyone out  because its not in Adam Armstrongs job description to proceed and throw the ball to whoever is free with the opposition still mostly out of position. That job can only be done by Brother Kyle or Brother Lyanco (who also has a licence to use special ball preparation equipment) both of whom are at the farthest dock gate - By which time the opposition have all ambled into position and the momentum is lost.

Not seen a game since Lincoln thanks to streaming issues so was delighted to find a stream that worked so I could see the match last night. Very poor first half but we looked a lot better when Armstrong came on. So many passes went astray or out of play. Better second half but Newcastle missed a raft of sitters and always looked dangerous as DCC was having a mare and was left exposed to often. Charley looks quality and Mara looks like he will decent but could probably do with more game time in the B team before he is ready to start. I know many people were fed up with Ralph rotating the ball around the back 4 but it denies the other team possession and we gave Newcastle the ball so often with aimless punts up field that I was praying for a bit of keep ball to give the defence a break. Couldn’t believe the handball decision against us. Once upon a time it had to be deliberate, which this wasn’t, but there we go. On the plus side we did show that we can break through their defence so if we can keep a clean sheet up there (🤪) and someone finds their shooting boots, who knows?

Last night we started off slowly but gradually grew into the game. We were a lot better in the second half I thought and on another day we would have at least been level going into the 2nd leg. I thought Alcaraz was absolutely class. Diallo played well, Adam Armstrong was good when he came on too, he was very unlucky to have his goal chalked off (he was fouled I thought in the build up so we should had a penalty) All to play for, hoping we can get a positive result next week and get to Wembley! :)

A lot of hard done by crying on here about various aspects of the game last night. Truth is we got exactly what we deserved, fuck all. We did not play well enough to get anything out of the game, and the same old flaws were there for all to see.

That City performance really was a one off, and any of you travelling up to SJP next week have my upmost respect knowing that Jones and his team are very likely to let us all down again

They didn’t “let us down” last night. Newcastle haven’t conceded a goal in the league since the consolation one we got in Nov, have only conceded 11 in the league all season ( I’ve only counted league because that’s their full strength side, like last night), which is 5 less than any other team. They are third in the league. What did you expect, us to roll them over?

Newcastle do seem to be getting the run of the ball in many games I’ve seen… the press want them to win, deserve to get to the final apparently. Well they’ve been a terrible football club for the last 20 odd years. They deserve sweet FA. Think luck may desert them next Tuesday.  Having spent many weekends watching saints in Newcastle, trying to survive the spinning dance floor on the now gone, tuxedo princess, I’ve loads of respect for their fans but Christ, they’ve some right bell ends who have appeared. Shame really.

Genuinely curious, when people get annoyed by this kind of thing do they think of how great the JWP vs Zaha wind up was at all or does it just never cross their mind?

Nah, that'll never work for a caption, no punchline. How about...

Good comment Dave fizzy.  I admire players who despite being fouled, tugged back or ankle-tapped still soldier on and try to make an attempt to score,

- as against those who go down like a sack of coal when they sense the slightest touch - and whatever happened to the rule about ref's booking players for diving?

Also having goals disallowed for fouls in the area is often a ridiculous decision (no matter what VAR says).  If that was the standard rule...

there would be a penalty given every time a corner is punted into the box and everyone goes for the ball.

There is a difference between "physical contact"... and a foul.  Many refs give a penalty, when the player ought to get an Oscar instead.

How are the sales getting on for the away leg ?

Because i've already bought a ticket i cant view what's left from the allocation.

Four blocks pretty much sold out. They've opened half of a 5th block (L7H) which is slowly selling. Decent backing considering theres train strikes the day after.

Interesting…I thought Diallo had one of his best games for us, but his passing was still appalling,

I thought he was excellent so looked at his stats for the game on the whoscored website (not my thing normally). He made a couple of really wayward passes just before he was brought off (flagging maybe?) but even with these his pass completion stat is 74%. Not bad but not as good as Alcarez or JWP at 81% but his interceptions were the highest by a way and that really showed in the game

Came over from Scandinavia for both Villa and Newcastle game - was gutted by the results and two disallowed goals although at least was able to initially celebrate two Saints goals before being chalked off...😶

One improvement under Jones is we do look a lot more solid as a unit. Yes, we are conceding the odd goal but it is not like we are getting hammered week in week out. Clearly, we need a striker, one might argue that just by getting a new striker it won't change much but actually a better striker might make better runs and help create more etc. To echo what others have said, just poor management not getting it sorted earlier...

I though Diallo had his best game in terms of breaking up the play and getting around the pitch. Alcarez winning the ball and looking for forward passes was also a big plus.

Thought we actually played reasonably well but when the opposition can bring on a £30+ million-pound striker and Saint-Maximin it is very difficult to compete with that. KWP - what an engine.

With regards to Newcastle fans being in the home end, clearly it is a stupid decision and you're asking for trouble. But it seemed from our seats that other people were jumping in or trying to get involved from rows above in the Kingsland North and causing other people below to fall over, or almost get pushed forward is just irresponsible, no matter what you think of Newcastle fans being in the home end. Especially as it may effect other Saints fans sitting nearby or hinder stewards or police from removing away fans more quickly and efficiently 🤷‍♂️

Still think at 0-1 its it worth resting players v Blackpool and giving it a go away at Newcastle. Tough to turn around but not impossible.

The final has already been decided, the refs just have to make sure it goes plan, Saints an nfc are not part of the plan.

We are playing better but we are not good enough to beat a team + ref team. My Manu friend was livid at the reffing of our game, angrier than me over the bias decisions, i told him i expected it and it happens so often i just shrug and accept the corrupt PL.

So very bias decisions....

yellow card for time wasting on kwp, Yet none for nc after they went in the lead and took forever to take the free kick. Card insured kwp had to be cautious.

Pope clatteting dj. Card all day long

AA getting shoved in the back, causing the hand to ball, Var jumping in when ref played on.

INSTANT Offside flag on Mara when he was onside late in the game, when have we seen the fag go up immediatly, doesnt happen even when obviously off side, think manu rashford last week.

We are a special club, therefore we have special rules for us. Making it it through to the finals will take something special.....................

because it is not the PL script.

Or we can actually look at what really happened - we didn't score through an Adams clear chance, and got done down the side to concede a goal. The referee didn't cause any of that. The two VAR calls were correct, their one was disallowed correctly and so was our one - Armstrong made a hash of his first attempt.

There is no agenda against Southampton, we are a nondescript to everyone out side of our fanbase so any thought of an agenda is a bit laughable.

Not excusing our failures, they are there for all to see, but if you think that game was reffed fairly, you are part of the problem. Some SFC fans are so docile, so forgiving they can shaft us over and over again.

Dud you watch the AA handball? Did you see it closely, in slow motion, knee, hand, goal............I bet you did, but ya cant see that big oaff barging into AA back as he attemping to score, miss that big detail, just like the refs.

You say we are nonedescript to all but us fans. You are right about that, even to the refs and PL, we offer them nothing, so we are despensible.

To says there is no ref bias, cheating in PL is someone not dealing in reality.

Im sure you will be back to tell us after the second leg, but like many others who have come on the board from other clubs (saddos without a life, who have a box of tissues by their keyboard) if you lose will disappear and never have the balls to come back on here. The odds are truly in your favour but footballs a funny game

It shows arrogance but I'd be pretty confident if I was them. Having said that I'd love nothing more than to see us wipe the smug smiles off the faces of their coaches, owners, players and fans. I'd give us long odds to do it unfortunately but stranger things have happened.

You're probably right in your sentiments but these lot need to be bought down a peg or two. The Arab take over seems to have gone to their heads. Richest club in the world and all that crap. I know where the Geordie nation can go

Pity really - geordies used to be such a down to earth lot and generally good fun to be around - just goes to show what money can do.
