I'm fully in the stripes camp - my favourite will always be the v-necked 75-76 kit, with black shorts and plain white socks... guess that's because I started watching the Saints in that kit? I'm surprised the 1976-79(?) thick and thin stripes haven't returned at some point; that was the first replica top I had...

Yeah I would like maybe a thick then thin candy stripe type of shirt, it seems we let whoever chooses our kits full licence to balls it up every season, the last 10 years we have had awful kits, the original Veho in house kit was pretty good but should of had white socks and the replica xerox 1980s version was my favourite of the return to top flight kits we have had. Am all for having a bit of a tweak now and then but it surely can’t be that difficult?? Away kit I do like yellow and blue but it’s not essential, maybe use the away shirts to experiment more. If you look at NFL kits in America they are pretty boring but at least they stick to the club’s original colours, we are Fulham with spilled ketchup down the front at mo .

Admittedly this is about this season's kit not next years, but I really loved us having the white shorts and black socks against Chelsea compared to vice versa. Reminded me a lot of the sash kit from league one and looked the most "Saints" we have pretty much all season. Maybe we could wear that as the home kit for the rest of the year.

Agreed, I made a comment on it during the game on the match thread. The white shorts and black socks work much better with the home shirt. Would be better to keep it.

Did look good. I still have a massive soft spot for the plain white shirt with red shorts as per the League Cup Final. Think it was only used then and against Bournemouth but thought it was one of our best ever kits. Have got the Rank Xerox retro shirt as my staple but the remake didn't do it for me.

That feels like one for the ‘experimental year’. I like that we tend to go more traditional one year then experiment the next (this year being an experimental year of course).

Personally I’d like them to get as close as possible to this… A5D6F1DB-B611-48E8-A7E3-1A957BD1522D.thumb.jpeg.165d2096051949a98ec7c3fce6d2d576.jpeg

I'd only been going for a couple of seasons before they unveiled that kit. Seemed so snazzy when I first saw it with the white socks, a couple of red stripes down the side of the shorts, and for the first time (other than the late 1800s) a badge on the shirt.

My absolute favourite Saints kit!  Don't think replica kits were a thing then sadly or else I would have had one - my first would have been the candy stripes I guess for my tenth birthday in 1978

It was the first one I had - actually mine might predate this by a year as it had the ‘filled in’ V-neck. You can’t beat simple & classic design.

Atletico Madrid and others have had a more classic approach in recent years (as well as the odd aberration).

Agreed, or all white looked very good.

In the grand scheme of things though this years kit has been atrocious.

I imagine next years slogan will be something along the lines of “back to basics” or “the Southampton way, the traditional way” and it’ll be stripes again next season.

And no sponsor's name emblazoned across the front of Mick Channon's shirt! I guess if they'd had the choice in those days, he and Alan Ball would have had "The Racing Post"🐴😃

I see clubs are likely to "voluntarily" ditch Betting Sponsor's logos on shirts. Looks like we'll be needing a new shirt sponsor.

I don't think this is ever going to get old for me. Also, what a team that was!

It wasn’t just a team, that shirt spanned a few sides as the club evolved after 1976 under Lawrie.

1976 - the post cup-winning side (Channon, Osgood, … then signing Ted MacDougall, Alan Ball), Cup winners cup..

1977/8 - the promotion year, Ted, Boyer, Nichol, Funnell,

1978/9 - back in Division One, Ball, League Cup Final, Golac

1979/80 - Channon returns, Boyer goal spree (at The Dell).

always preferred what came next with the Keegan shirt, but the Admiral stripes certainly brings back memories of a good time to be a Saints fan.

Didn't that shirt first appear for the Charity Shield?  I remember the replica shirt I had also said 'FA Cup Winners 1976' so obviously from 1976/77 - which was a slightly disappointing season

After a mixture of initially the sash in 1885, then right and white quarters and next red and white halves we changed to stripes to go with the blue shorts and socks in 1896 and that was to become the traditional kit until the 50s. The kit doesn't overly bother me, not crazy on stripes but every other season seems OK to me but maybe time for a blast from the past.

I like the navy blue shorts tack. Would make us distinct from Brentford,  Stoke, Sunderland etc.

Personally I don't give a damn about next seasons kit but I do give a damn about the probabilty of relegation.

If we get relegated (i actually think we'll survive), you get to look forward to promotion - And still, above that, you get to enjoy the exquisite joy that comes with fan's kit efforts/speculation.... and then the bitter disappointment that generally follows.

Yes it was first worn at Wembley for the Charity Shield, and only launched on the Friday before. The badge first appeared as a direct embroidery on the shirt, then on a simple black circle and by the end of the season the FA Cup Winners 1976 had been added. That badge continued to be used on the Admiral shirts through to 1980 and the Patrick era.

RED & WHITE STRIPES.

( I know that those in charge of making these sort of decisions know f-all about Saints history and care even less, but if they want to learn what RED & WHITE STRIPES look like perhaps they could google Mick Channon, or Ron Davies or Charlie Wayman or Eric Day etc)

RED & WHITE STRIPES

BTW, any numpty who's paid over hard-earned for this seasons abysmal kit should flog themselves with stinging nettles every day for the rest of the season in penance.

It seems like you don’t either. Saints’ history started with a sash, then quarters, then red and white halves. Then we had nearly all of the 80s where we didn’t wear “traditional” stripes.

I get it, you’re a stripe fetishist. Fair enough. A lot of other fans like it when we mix it up a bit. Stripes every year gets flipping boring. As Barcelona have shown it’s perfectly possible to deviate away from stripes on a regular basis and not lose any sort of identity.

This years kit is dreadful though (although looked at its best against Chelsea as it was with white shorts and black socks and very similar to the first ever sash kit in 1885).

As a stripe fetishist, do you prefer the centre stripe to be white or red or the bloody awful variant where the centre of the shirt is where a red and white stripe meet. Personally I prefer a white stripe.

I like all the kits with a white centre, candy stripe, Rank Xerox 1 & 2, Gareth Bale and you could include the two sashes. I like the white sleaved promotion kit as well, I like a bit if white it seems, apart from this years kit.

Not necessarily a terrible thing. I loved Hummel kits from the 80s but I have not really liked much they’ve done since they returned to the fold. I dislike all of the three kits from this season; the home kit only looked good on the rare occasion we wore it with white shorts and black socks (Chelsea away IIRC) thus doing a very decent alternative to the 2010 sash kit.tge wave kit and the green one are bloody awful imo.

Anyone remember this kit? Before the days of official 3rd kits and changing every season. This must have been c83/84 red and white home kit, light blue and dark blue away kit. IIRC we wore this 3 times away to Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup and this picture looks like away to QPR on their plastic pitch as the other teams wore blue and white shirts

It was first worn away to West Brom in September 1980. At the time we had to have two versions of every kit, one with a sponsor and one without as any game on TV, even short highlights, could not show shirts with sponsors.

Really liked those Patrick kits including the later variation of this with the shoulder flashes (both the red and the blue).  Also the Patrick boots were decent at the time too, soft leather and ali studs - got a pair to compliment the favoured Pumas marshalling the back line at school.  Whether it's Hummel or the likes of Umbro next season it would be good to see the candy stripes or the reverse Ajax with the minimum of fucking about from 'the amazing Josh, Suki and their innovative multifaceted creative team'.

yeah i liked them too, a bit different. the plain red with shoulder flashes was the centenary kit. For all the talk about stripes being saints tradition if you were born in the seventies and got into football in the 80s Saints didn't have stripes at all. First kit i remember was the keegan, red and white, then the plain red with white and black shoulders, then i think it was the hummel Denmark kit, so for the first 10 year of being a saints fan we never wore stripes.

The old man took me to my first game at the Dell as a birthday present in 1976, Saints v Fulham, Saints had Channon, Osgood and MacDougall up front in the candy stripes giving Bobby Moore the run around.  Totally spoilt in the first game and that was it for me.  Previously made do with a generic Bukta red and white shirt for the park but Admiral from Toomers and Activity in Eastleigh birthdays and Xmas following.  Would love to see that kit back as it looked great in the flesh, as did the Patrick number that followed.

No sorry, more to do with the fact I've not been in touch with anyone but when I make the effort I'll hopefully find something interesting.

I've usually seen the shirts by now (or at least the official concepts) but nothing yet this year either.
My logical guess is that we will go back to stripes, as we've had a break and the club (obviously) know that is our more traditional strip (and it sells). Commercially they like to mix it up to generate 'new' sales with the more unusual/quirky shirts, as if we had stripes each year, people will often stick with their stripes from a previous season, so overall sales are down.
I believe this seasons shirt sales have been a disaster. Very bad Home & Away shirts (Marmite), combined with a dreadful season and hard economic times, have resulted in the worst sales in a long time, hence the club starting to reduce them in Feb!
