When it's good its us when its bad it's they 🤣

Quite rightly, when it's the defeats under Ralph, it's "Southampton", but when it's the wins under Jones, it's "us". It's the Redkunt way.

Happy with todays performance

Technically there’s loads to do, however I saw effort, aggression, commitment, enthusiasm and that’ll help us build character and momentum…

Palace have more quality in their side than us and we out battled them, disappointed we didn’t see the same against Forest but we’ve a free hit at home against Man City next, compete in that and the tide May begin to change for Jones.

I don't mind having a direct style of play. Even better, with a squad capable of other options too.

Stretching the game, getting into more attacking positions quickly, forcing their defence to make the decisions and costly errors, helped by having players positioned to back up the targets and win it back higher up the park. So yes, we'll lose the ball a bit more, but the key is where and how we win it back, when that happens.

Being able to mix it up with other styles when needed is even better. Our midfield has been really weak with Romeu gone, so having options that don't rely on it, isn't terrible.

RalphBall was lovely when it worked, and a catastrophe when it didn't and we offered no other options.

Glad to have any kind of win on the board. I've no issues with Jones' quotes but we need to see those results now in the league. And the club have to get those players in the door. If they don't, then it will be the second manager they've pushed into traffic.

If Che was really geeing up the boss, then it's an excellent sign of player buy in.

Unfairly criticised just because he had a poor game v Lincoln but I think we’re a better team with him in it. Also think he’s unfairly criticised due to his relaxed demeanour - it was like people were wanting him to burst into tears when he makes a mistake - when a player with a cool head is what we’ve been lacking.

It's fine when people call out bad performances but what riles me with a lot of fans is that they have an agenda and then belligerently stick to it.

If a player has a couple of poor performances and then it means they are just shit and always will be.

Maitland Niles is, I think, an average Premier League player who will have some good and some bad games. He was terrible against Lincoln, and looked lazy and disinterested. Today he was alright so fair play to him for playing better.

Started crap, thought it would be same old. Palace could and probably should have had a couple in the first part of the 1st half.

From about 30 mins we got to grips with it, kept the ball a bit but didn't actually create anything of note. A bit huff and puff.

2nd half we came out more on the front foot, more aggressive, more in their faces and it worked. I don't care who the defender is, they will always hate being pressed and that's what we did well in the 2nd half.

There is a tinge of frustration that we couldn't play like that against Forest, and part of me wonders if once again the players are wilting under the pressure in the league, but a win is a win and you have to take them at the moment no matter where they come. Could build some momentum, could be a false dawn.

Hope we get a decent draw in the next round.

Someone shit, playing shit. Happy to avoid everyone for as long as possible. If Wigan can win the cup in their relegation season so can we.

I hate singing songs against the manager but it seemed to do the trick! After the second rendition we seemed to remember that we had a midfield, stopped lumping it forward & actually used Aribo.

Great effort by the saints fans today... Good numbers & good volume!

In some ways it was a good performance, to grind out a win and show some resilience after going behind in an away match.

However, first half was the usual garbage and we conceded a very soft goal again. Luckily, we were given two soft goals today.

I just don't see any evidence of cohesive coaching or patterns of play. The fact will remain, that our manager is substandard, in my view, and I'm sure we will be back to earth with a bump over the next few games.

Good to get a win to build some confidence, albeit it was gift wrapped to us (just like we've been doing in the league).

City is a free hit during the week, but Everton away is huge. Terrible record there, but its a 6 pointer and they're feeling the pressure too. We simply must get something. Another defeat and we're giving ourselves an insurmountable task, regardless of who we bring in (players or manager)

they are coming from north london , no trains and we will just go back to cars and coaches and straight down a3m , only chance they meet is maybe on fleet services

I saw a few on the tube going through London, along with some other Saints fans. No bother from any of them.

I think Lyanco deserves a shout out, it can’t be easy and we’ve seen players get worse and worse after making fuck ups (Bednarek for one). I’m not saying he’s a great player or should be starting, but he’s clearly got a pair of bollocks and a good mentality. There’s plenty of other centre halves who wouldn’t have fancied playing full back against Saha after the last couple of performances.

I was at the spurs game today. That dirty Westwood was getting as much abuse as we normally give him...... which was nice.

What are the exact words to the Westwood song, anyone care to enlighten me, without breaking any libel laws?

Got a good feeling about Everton, we are better away, and as you say the pressure is on them.

I swear it's easier to get to Newcastle than Palace. Such hard work without the trains.

1st half long ball crap, JWP was getting some rough treatment from Palace, they have issues with him, so glad he scored. Good to see another team make a balls up in defence for once. Aribo. DCC. and AMN really not at the races.

2nd half was way better, but needed to be. More movement, aggression, and helpfully the ball was played on the deck a bit more.

Good to see A Armstrong score, he deserved that, as he was an irritating presence today. Hopefully he can build on that, we need him to. Mara added more variety.

The weather was ghastly so I don't think we should expect silky football. However every game seems to have started with everybody static and hopeful long balls.

Either Jones sets it up that way and the players gradually revert to a more familiar style, or they aren't able to play his style at the start of the game. Either way as the manager he has to sort that.

Any win is a bonus and can help build confidence. Let's hope its not wasted.

I think it's more that they're wilting under the pressure at home. Best periods of play under Jones (I know their haven't been many) have been in the second halves against Liverpool, Fulham and Palace away. If St Mary's stays toxic, we're definitely going down.

Everyone could see that despite the result, we were still fairly shit all being said. But that's so much easier to stomach when you can the players giving a shit. Playing nasty and getting all up in people's faces? Love it. That's probably the only real way we'll get out of this.

I'll admit that after the Forest game just the sight of NJ's face was making me effing furious. And I know shit gets said on forums on social media, but in the real world where we're not all being monsters, being consumed by hate is actually a really rare and pretty grim thing. But that's what I was feeling. I was so angry with the man. But these comments from him today? It all feels a bit different. As did the attitude of the players. And I think you can also tell from the comments that NJ realises his job is already on the line. Which he needs to.

The one thing I will say for NJ is that despite being fucking infuriatingly sub-par, he's clearly putting fucking every inch of himself into this. And if he is, then we should rightfully expect the players to as well, which up to now they most definitely have not been. And if... just IF... we can get out of this by being fucking nasty bastards who kick and scream the opposition into submission, then I'll be proud of the lot of them. Perhaps even Jones.

We'll see against Everton whether there has actually been some progress or whether today's improvement was just a result of being free of the pressures of the league. I'm fully prepared for it to all amount to nothing and for the fury to return. But for the moment I'm daring to live in a little hope.

Better today with 4 at the back and the more organised press...and whatever Adam Armstrong had at half time, can he please not be so greedy and share it with the rest of the players! But I think AA's goal was still the only shot we had on target in open play, so there's a long way to go.

But the half time penalty shootout was top comedy and worth the admission price alone. When the 11/12 year old Palace goalie,, Alfie gave it large to the Saints fans after saving a dribbler from our six year old striker that barely got to the line, the chorus of 'you fat bastard' from thousands of Saints fans was one of the few times the chant was fairly appropriate!

A win but it was still a shit performance, without the two shit goals we didn't look like beating an under strength out of form Palace side.

Not one long ball made it to it's target, too many aimless chips to no one in midfield. AMN eas alright only, he is still lazy, makes sloppy passes and lets the ball get intercepted when he just needs to step towards the ball to collect it. Lyanco didn't make a major mistake but still dives in. Caleta-Car was wobbly at times.

We looked better when we retained the ball, there was a good level of aggression and commitment throughout but it was still a long way from a good performance.

Nice to be in the hat though.

We were the under strength team, not them and our form is far worse than theirs.

Palace gift wrapped that for us with some comical defending so whilst a win is a win the same old problems exist i.e. where are the goals coming from?

It wasn't the kind of win that made me think we had enough to get out of this but at least it gives the team some heart.

If Saints can play most of the time like we did for a good 20-30 minutes spell in the second half we might have a chance. It was something we had under Ralph initially before he lost it a while back, and Jones hasn’t got it back: our players playing quick passes, moving play rapidly, pass and move, and support the forward line in numbers. Basically compress the play up in the opposition half by working extra hard for each other in and out of possession. First half was notably dreadful to watch and looked like we’d even got backwards since Ralph. The second half gives a bit of hope that there’s an intent to play that well again.

My stream ended early after the game but it looked like Che Adams was giving Jones a really good gee up, so that’s good to see. We rode our luck big time today but the bravery in the second half won it. More if that, less of the passive rubbish that has been prevalent for months and months.

Jones’ comments are fair, we do need to be more aggressive, not just being niggly but working hard and making it really hard work for the other side.  We were nowhere near that first half, it was all too easy for Palace. Second half a completely different story.

Lack of clear chances is still a worry, but play like we did second half and more chances will come, we were close to a couple of really good openings down the left that just lacked a precise ball at the right time. Hopefully that will come. I’m not particularly confident it will, but I have a glimmer of hope.

Anyone else think Arma's goal from putting pressure on the keeper ( he was in his one half when he anticipated the back pass) was reminiscent of a few that Danny Ings scoredfor us?

Yep.

To be fair to Armstrong he is very good off the ball. He works so hard and does make some good runs that are rarely picked out.

The problem is he's barely shown any quality so far in a Saints shirt.

Jones doing what Ralph couldn’t do beating palace away this season, shows Mr Jones is the better manager and just what we need.

The laziness is something that is hard to stomach, AMN and Aribo when he’s played wide have been guilty of not tracking back and failing to press leaving the defence with too much to do. That blame can’t be laid  at the door of the irritating coal miner.

we had plenty of those type of lazy fuckers in our 2005 relegation side.

feed him the bastards needed and he will thrive. Jones realising his jobs on the line, the booing and saying you don’t know what you’re doing didn’t get to his head but calling his football shit? that was where it crossed the line. that line being going from hoofball to Jones actually allowing saints to play the football on earth atmosphere with the nasty edge we need to stay up. city is a free hit and I agree with you that everton is where we really see whether he (and most importantly the players following him) are up to the challenge. Hopefully he does well from now on, I like him in a weird he’s a twat but he’s on our side sort of way.
