Anyone else think Arma's goal from putting pressure on the keeper ( he was in his one half when he anticipated the back pass) was reminiscent of a few that Danny Ings scoredfor us?

Good shout, seemed to give him a lift he looked chuffed at the end, in fact the whole squad looked like they'd released a bit of stress and enjoyed celebrating the win at the final whistle, they needed that against what looked like a strong Palace line up.

I fancy Grimsby , Fleetwood or Accrington away

Only issue would be getting a ticket. How many do Grimsby offer away fans? Never seen a game there.

Enough I think for what would be televised game in the North East but let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

Fleetwood away end looks decent.

Odds unlikely we'd get either though.

Wrexham would also be a good trip i think

So yesterday some FA cup matches had VAR and some didn't so some goals got ruled out due to some earlier off side while some goals stood even though the goal scorer received the ball when off side ( Lino a few yards back !)

yes it stinks. Effectively a cup competition that should be played with the some rules for all allows Mike Dean to ensure Liverpool don't get knocked out.

I had a crazy dream last night, Lyanco was bossing Zaha, Armstrong scored, two goalkeeping howlers - but at the other end....it was the craziest shit.

The perils of a late night cheeseboard.

Wolves were absolutely robbed by multiple decisions.

Have to start questioning the integrity of the officials to be honest. Not seen decisions as bad as those before, especially with VAR

That Salah decision was a nonsense. It all hangs on whether the Wolves defender deliberately  played the ball. Does anybody (apart from Mike Dean) seriously think that Toti deliberately headed the ball backwards towards Salah?

‘Deliberate play’ is when a player has control of the ball with the possibility of:

  • passing the ball to a team-mate; or
  • gaining possession of the ball; or
  • clearing the ball (e.g. by kicking or heading it).

If the pass, attempt to gain possession or clearance by the player in control of the ball is inaccurate or unsuccessful, this does not negate the fact that the player ‘deliberately played’ the ball.

You’ve demonstrated that the law was applied correctly. The defender deliberately tried to clear the ball. He was unsuccessful.

The law is a joke and was likely dreamed up by someone who hasn’t played football before.

He deliberately tried to clear the ball but at no stage was he ‘in control’ of it, which is what is specified in the IFAB interpretation guidance. I strongly suspect that the interpretation as applied yesterday by Mike Dean was idiosyncratic and that other jurisdictions would have filed Salah offside, which is what any right thinking football supporter would expect.

He was in control of the ball, insofar as he was able to make an unsuccessful  attempt at an interception or clearance. As defined in the law.

The mistake is not in the application of the law, it’s the law itself. It has been a terrible law for far too long.

Agreed. It's utter nonsense. If Salah wasn't there then the defender wouldn't have needed to intercept the pass, meaning as soon as the pass was played Salah was interfering with play.

It’s the most ludicrous and baffling law, I can’t believe it hasn’t been changed over time. I genuinely think it was created by people who have never played football before; but how it hasn’t been reversed, I have no idea. The inference of the law is that a defender in that situation should be able to tell 100% that the striker is in an offside position before he decides whether to make an attempt to play the ball or not. It’s an utter nonsense, of course the defender is going to assume that there is a possibility the striker could be onside and he will therefore react to the striker’s position. Absolutely stupid law and needs changing immediately.

Well, yes and no. In my view that ball deflected off the defender. You’d have to be an avid Liverpool supporter to see his action as him ever being in control of the ball.

…gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has:

  • rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar, match official or an opponent

Quite so. Especially in these days of delayed flags by the assistant.

I thought, wrongly I guess, that the offence was committed when a player deliberately plays the ball to a player in an offside position. Whether the receiving player gets the ball or not, he's then deemed offside because the ball is intentionally played to him.

So the moment the ball was hit directly towards Salah who was in an offside position then that's that. I would have thought Totti touching the ball, whether in control or not, would be irrelevant as the ball would by then be 'out of play'.

I rember Nistelroy staying on goalines from free kicks and never being offside because 1. The ball wasn't played to him and 2. He wasn't interfering with play (though how that stands up I don't know).

Similarly, Salah, in the box, HAS to be interfering play!

Funnily enough Dean wouldn’t have the final decision on the offside, that’s in the hands of the VAR line official.

I only found that out during a game v Spurs at SMS - the 2 seats next to me are occupied by a ST holder who only turns up now and again other times guests use them. Kane had scored and a VAR check was called upon I uttered to Mrs JBS that whoever the often against us contentious VAR ref was, would be trying to make this stand. That weeks  “guest” pipes up “VAR Ref has no say in offsides, it’s the line officials decision” “anyway, I know the Lino on this game and he’s a Arsenal fan so you will be getting a fair crack of the whip”: decision offside.  Turns out the chap was a referee who had officiated as high as the championship, the remainder of the game was quite enlightening in his company.

Small point but the title of thread is very unlikely.
Should we win our final 20 games then we would have 72points and no such figure has been high enough to win PL.

sorry to crush any dreams
