Why do we keep scoring OG's?

I'm getting rather bored of Saints players scoring at the wrong end. Please stop it.

I've not done research but it seems we are in a bit of an OG goal psychological situation at present. The more we know we must not score in our own goal the more likely it is that we will do it. Surely our saints sports psychology shrink can unhitch that particularly unhelpful negative belief from our players heads?

I don't know our all time highest own goal scorer but I think a look at the charts would be interesting. We have to be good at something and at least we seem to know where the back of our net is 😉

Indeed i can see them in training now putting an OG away every time and Nathan on MOTD stating that the lads look good in training and if only we could get that goal-scoring prowess going when it matters match day on the pitch , oh, and in the opponents net. then we will be fine.

I've just moved back to Bitterne from Surrey so I am sure that,  shortly, if i'm not there, I will be able to discern the difference between an OG cheer and a normal cheer if i walk up a bit closer. Yes its got that desperate. At least next year we can win a few more games in the Championship.

to be fair I don’t think there’s a specific reason, the ones I can remember Salisu, Perraud, JWP, Bazunu. Salisu with a great finish, Perraud trying to follow a Brighton back post runner, JWP attempt at a block, Bazunu getting marked by our own player AMN.

You could say it’s down to the obvious, we aren’t structured correctly and do not stay in shape as a unit allowing the opposition to get in dangerous positions. Lyanco is the worst for this, he’s like a headless chicken and like all our defenders is constantly stuck in two minds. If we did stay together maybe the crosses into our box would be dealt with. I also think it’s inexperience from the defenders and especially goalkeeper who isn’t good at commanding the defence leading them to not know what to do and eventually stick it in their own net. oh well, they were gonna score eventually anyways.

Some of its bad luck, some of it will be likely poor positioning/footwork from the person scoring the own goal and some will be poor defending from others that leaves someone trying to make a last ditch tackle or block that they aren't fully in control of.

But yeh basically poor defending, if you are under pressure and relying on lots of blocks, last ditch tackles, not being in control of the game then some of the bounces or deflections are going to be unlucky ones.
