Regular viewers will know that I've been one of the forum's eternal optimists over the years (often annoyingly so) but I concur with CB Fry... We're going down this season. ("Happy to be proven wrong" etc)

I don't see how. We've just had our best run of the season (in terms of attainable fixtures). That's in the bin now, lost 90% of them.

We have to play Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle and we need to be winning a couple of those games and every other home game to stand any chance.

We are rooted to the bottom of the league and require 2 wins to even lift ourselves off of the bottom. It's not salvageable, even for the most optimistic coach. Happy to say when people are being daft about relegation (i.e. when we have 26 points at this stage), but we need to look at this situation now with a sense of realism. 

There should be no expectation for any new manager to keep us up, if they do it's a huge unexpected bonus.

Honestly, get used to it.

No one coming in and turn it round enough now. 

3 teams have to be relegated. There is no chance now that we won't be one of them.

Glad to be reading this news today. 

If we can take any positives from the situation we are in it is that we still have time.  We're not completely adrift, and judging by some recent performances, a few of the players we've signed show potential and can jump right in.  I reckon the right manager could get a decent 11 out of what we have that could potentially win games.  Whether SR are capable of finding that manager however is yet to be seen.

I still think GK is a very weak link for us at the mo and would prefer Caballero in for the rest of the season.

The blame for this debacle has to lay firmly with Sports Republic - he was wholly unequipped for the Premier League. How they didn’t spot this, his tactical limitations or his character flaws is beyond me. 

Couldn’t agree less with the point about no one else being able to do better with this group of players - there were plenty of better options available, and anyone of them would have done better I suspect. This is a squad with a lot of potential (goal scoring problem notwithstanding) - that we’ve squandered the last 3 months, and our “easiest” run of games is simply criminal and has likely sealed our fate.

Jones’ tactics were suicidal, I don’t care how many CBs you put infront of the GK if you sit back and concede possession meekly in our own half you’re asking to let goals in

I look out for CB Fry’s posts at this time of year generally in reply to the posts about teams catching us with miraculous runs. This time it’s us that would need a miraculous (and others to have an absolute mare) run - can’t see it happening but as trousers says - happy to be proved wrong. We needed those 3 points yesterday to stand any kind of chance.

It looks like I was right - Jones, Cohen and Sheehan all sacked; Selles appointed in the interim.

It does beg the question who is going to help Selles with the coaching. Anyone any idea?

In terms of permanent manager, Poch or Koeman would be amazing but doubt we would get them. I like the idea of Gallardo or Jaissle. Bielsa would also be a good possibility. Forget about Kompany, Corberan or Carrick - they are not going to quit a Championship club pressing for promotion to join a relegation fight!

Man U A

Brentford H

Spurs H

Can’t see many points from them, we will be cut a long way adrift by the end of March

Remember when Ralph first came in after the disastrous Hughes era (which I turn came after the disastrous Pellegrino and Puel eras)? He instantly turned us into a pressing side, gave us an identity and instantly got us results against big teams. Yes our team now is weaker but any decent manager comes in and makes the best of the players available. It can't be proven but any decent manager could have done a better job than Jones has.

Yesterday when i was watching Jones' fiddle whilst our lead burned away i thought back to that game against Leeds where the completely inept Marsch let us come back from 2 nil down in the same way. That better be a wind up.

Blimey, the misery on here today.

Yes, the clown has gone. Yes, he should never have been appointed. Yes, SR have a lot to answer for. Yes, he should’ve been sacked long ago.

But the fact is he is now gone. Everyone wanted this.

Sport Republic have to get this appointment right otherwise their tenure and trust from the fans is done, and quite honestly it can’t get much lower now.

The clown has gone. Enjoy the day.

We're 4 points off safety with 48 points still to play for. Obviously it remains absolutely possible for us to survive should we strike gold with the next manager.

Is it likely? That's another question entirely, and it's certainly become increasingly less likely throughout the Jones run. And yesterday was a massive blow. However, the squad's definitely better than it was, and I find it hard to believe it's not good enough if in the right hands.

But I understand the emotional safety of writing off hope, and it it makes you feel better then go for it.

Great news to wake up to. No need for the personal stuff against Jones. He was too inexperienced and too emotionally unstable for such a big job. He'll rise again.

He was sacked when JWP took those free kicks, the way he did. 

As supporters we need to be sensible now. Saints aren't relegated yet, but the chances are high.

So it is gung ho for the next 16 games. 5 points off safety is achievable, but it will need everybody pulling in the same direction.

That means that even if it is Bruce or Marsch, we are going to have to swallow it and roar the team to survival. It really is the only way.

I worry that the supporters having tasted blood will be on a short fuse now, but there lies ruin.

Sensible team, sensible tactics please.

Well thank fuck for that.

The nightmare of "Nathan Jones, Premier League Manager" is finally over.

Some of the longest three months of my life.

I now feel like Gollum in the Mountain of Doom, at the end of The Return of The King.

Having just bitten off Frodo's finger and reclaimed the One Ring. Dancing for joy on the edge of a dangerous precipice, one misstep away from plunging into the Lake of Fire.

"Yeeeeeesssss!!!!" "Yeeeeeeeessssss!!!!!!"

 

Rasmus's next vital selection will ultimately decide our fate.

I truly hope he has learned something of great value from this bizarre and entirely foreseeable experience. Because if he hasn't, then we're all gonna burn.

 

I am normally such a calm and relaxed person, but having to watch on in helpless horror, Rasmus standing idly by, unmoved, whilst the lower league wreckingball mismanagement of Nathan Jones set about the demolition of the Club I love, I would have exploded without having somewhere to vent the anger and share in the overwhelming disbelief together with fellow Saints fans. We don't all have the same perspectives on events, and the best ways to handle them, but we all love this Football Club, and ultimately want what we feel is best for it.

I'm glad we have this "Support Group for Saints Abuse Survivors". It has been cathartic.

The shit we have to go through together with this Club. 🤣

But in a weird sort of way, it is part of what makes being a Southampton supporter special. The Highs and Lowes of the Rollercoaster ride.

I for one look forward to slipping back into the shadows for a while, and getting on with my life again.

 

So long Mad Nate, and thanks for all the front-footed aggression. Might want to brush up on your people skills before having another crack at this management lark. With the greatest of respect.
