Is that the view from the bar? If so then is that chippy still open on the left, can’t remember it’s name but was decent. Also on the right used to have a chippy and kebab shop called Andy, family business really nice bunch. From about where that’s taken from there used to be an Indian restaurant called Bitterne Balti, before that is was an American style diner place. Further down there used to be a pet shop and newsagent the other side. Quite a lot of character history round the triangle area. When I was a kid some Sundays they have the small trains on those tracks in riverside park, not sure if they’re still there.

Yeah, I scooched over to the left a bit but in essence it's the view from the bar.

The chippy down the hill is still open, but has changed hands at least twice in the time I've been here (since 2019).

Andy's also still going, but the family sold it on last year.

Bitterne Balti folded during the height of Covid but remains an Indian restaurant (called Dhamaka now).

The small trains still run! Though strangely I've never seen them in person.

Sorry for having derailed the topic a bit - but thought I'd answer these at least!

It was a nice bit of drift to the thread; I enjoyed it as it’s not a part of Southampton I’ve really been to.

As my name suggests, I have moved away, but, very soon will be moving back due to a separation. Will have to change my name on here if I can!

Looking at the Town Quay area so interested in the pubs and history there.

Rather than change name you need to buy someone’s. The is a buoyant black market

They still do, have taken my daughters there.

Pleasing to know it's still running. I grew up round there and used to love the train rides as a kid.

I went to school at Bitterne Park and there was a teacher who taught CDT and tried to be quite pally with the students. He would sometimes give a group of us a lift down to the Triangle chippy at lunch time in his kit car.

There was a video hire shop called Solent Video I used to use all the time until Blockbuster opened in Portswood and eventually put all the smaller independent places out of business.

It's an 'underground economy' now so as not to offend anyone - well, at least until the badgers rise up and take offence.

We are slow to anger, but unrelenting once roused. However, an economy where the units of currency are worms, roots, and beetles is fine by me.

1991.

Mr Marsh was his name. He was the only teacher I had in all my time there that seemed to be genuinely enthusiastic about his subject and didn't talk down to the kids in a condescending way.

You were a couple of years above me. I remember Mr Marsh though he wasn’t a bad teacher to be fair.

I keep meaning to call in Butchers as SIL recommends it highly.

I also use Untappd and we are lucky to have such good places for craft beer. I use Steel Tank a lot for me one of the best in Soton. Bookshop in Portswood and Witches Brew in Shirley do great casks too.

I'm still off it, been years now. I love no hangovers, being able to get up and get on with the day, no beer belly, no regrets about what I did / said when pissed, etc.

Give it a try for a while Del and see how you feel. It ain't for anyone, but a booze free life suits me.

That’s the thing when I’ve done it for a few months it has suited me, several people I know have given up and every single one that’s stayed off it has said they feel so much better. So here we go!

Good man. When you're out for dinner and splitting the bill with drinkers, just make sure you get the king prawns and truffles to get your dollars worth!

Ha no mate.

just not enjoying it anymore, dont want to ruin days and weekends by being hungover and just trying to cut down doesn’t really work for me. A few people I knows health is suffering due to booze mainly and few people I know have given up recently and are now 6 months to a year in and loving it plus had a bit of a surprise at some blood test results recently, nothing major serious but needs sorting while I can. So all those things combined have made me decided I don’t want it anymore. Not for everyone of course and I won’t bore everyone by it being the first thing I say when I meet them 😉

Doesn't need to be said mate. I just say I'm driving which is true. Nobody gives a shit anyway, especially if they're drinking.

Dodgy blood test results gave me the kick as well. I'm living with a few war wounds from it, but it could we worse, and would have been had I carried on

Older I get I am drinking less. Think some are predisposed to having drink problems. Although think I have fairly addictive personality and drunk loads my time but never felt it was anything other than social though.  So no real judgement on those giving it a miss but doesn’t feel like something that I would massively benefit from.

Yeah don’t think it is an issue at all not drinking.

Mate I’m a big fat failure with this. I lasted less than 2 freaking weeks…

The trouble is I like the taste and feeling, but like you I feel so much better when I don’t.

My productivity goes through the roof when I don’t and have detoxed my liver. Clear head, better memory and a lot more patience.

And needless to say training is infinitely easier when I’ve knocked it on the h ad for a few days.

I really want to but it might be hard in the winter

I hope it goes well Turkish. My wife has been a non (or one drink only) drinker for years, great for lifts home. She has noticed that attitudes have changed over the years, previously she would get bugged all evening long with 'go one just have one' 'why don't you drink' etc, but now no one is bothered.

Personally I couldn't stop altogether, despite doing 4 months in the past and feeling good on it. I try and manage big sessions now, as I can't be arsed with the hangover. But I really enjoy a little weekend afternoon in the pub every now and then and wine with a nice meal. Also when work is really stressful a few cans of cider help in the evenings.

We are just middle aged men who can't handle their booze anymore and we're ok with it.

Day out at Millwall tomorrow. Best part of the day is finding some decent pubs before game. Sure it helps with the pre-match optimism as well. Don’t need the booze but feels like all part of the day out

Agreed. A day out it football isn't the same since I stopped drinking. A few beers before the game, a couple in the middle, and a few after were a big part of the day out.

This is true but it’s been different for me for a while anyway. Since I moved up north it’s either driving or a long train journey, which used to be on my own meeting up with mates who’d been on the beers since 10am and then having to leave early to get the train back. So although I used to absolutely love a day out at football it’s not been the same for me for 10 years already.

when I see harrogate it’s in the family stand with my lad and his mates, we might go for one on the way home but I can easily cut that out
