Egg, do you mind me enquiring how old you are? I had my first ever liaison with gout a few months back which was a wake up call and the jolt I needed to slow right down. Lager has been replaced by mineral water and sitting on the settee by working out on the Peloton. Still  have a few at weekends but feel much better. My usual cue for getting completely smashed is a Saints win so I thank the lads for helping me out there.

I'm 50. When drinking I was having gout attacks often - knees, Achilles, elbows, big toes, etc. Horrific pain, especially knee and Achilles. Since stopping almost 6 years I've only had one attack, and haven't used the allopurinol for a few years now. Excercise is vital for it, ditto lots of water to flush the body, and avoiding an excess of protein. I hope you can keep it at bay 🤞

I get gout, well I say get it I have had it, my last bout was about 3 years ago just before covid lock downs. I’ve had periods of heavy drinking in that time, holidays, conferences etc but someone told me tumeric helps and also drinking lots of water. I now drink about 7-8 pints of water a day and been taking two tumeric tablets each morning and this seems to have stopped it. Although I also exercise a lot more and cut back on booze generally. You can buy it fairly cheaply on Amazon, this is the stuff I use. Got to be worth a go for you. Like most things though diet and exercise is the key

Cheers Del, Ill try turmeric. My go to preventer is (or has been) concentrated cherry drink (dilute with water) and a decent apple cider vinegar (organic with 'mother'). Both really good at keeping the uric acid in balance.

Cheers for the recommendation. So far water in lieu of beer has seen mine off. I also got prescribed concentrated cherry juice, not really sure if that had any effect.

For anyone wanting to cut down on the ale I recommend Adrian Chiles book The Good Drinker. I’m never going to abstain entirely and don’t feel the need to but similar to him my unit count had got a bit silly and needed reining in.

Can’t stand him.

The unexpected joy of being sober is a good book

There is a guy called Andy Ramage, ex pro footballer who was one of the people behind one year no beer is worth a follow on LinkedIn. He’s also done a ted talk on giving up booze and has an app called Dryy which is free to sign up to which is also very good.

his Ted talk is very good

Not booze related but anyone elses kids going mad for this prime stuff? Son has been banging on about it for weeks at his football last night about 7 or 8 kids turned up with it. Went to the shop after and sold out, just been again and they had an overnight delivery and only about 20 bottles left restricting sales to 3 per person.

It's mad, a couple of youtubers promote it. It's meant to be a health drink i've let him have some because there's hardly any sugar or caffeine in it. Unlike something like lucozade which is full of sugar and the sugar free one is stuffed full of caffeine. Been reports of people fighting in shops to get their hands on some of it. Had a swig of his earlier, just tastes like a strawberry cordial to me, £2 a frigging bottle FFS

Someone i know has been to doctors over the last six months suffering from all sorts of illnesses, fatigue, has taken loads of time of sick and is currently on a work sabbatical for two months to work on their mental health. The person claims to be exercising regularly (walking or jogging slowly) and eating healthily but also claims to have no energy to go to the gym and generally always feels unwell so there must be something seriously wrong with them. The doctor has put them on several pills of some description.

I have recently discovered i have access to this persons myfitnesspal diary so i had a little stalk last night. Now unless this person is putting fake information into what they think is a private diary this person appears to be drinking 4-6 cans of stella per day, more on a weekend, a typical food diary for the day consists of a couple of slices of white bread with butter for lunch, maybe a small salad and a relatively normal tea, chicken, tuna with a few sides however they are typically getting about 1600 calories with about half it coming from cans of stella.

Now two points here, is this person so seriously thick that they cant see what the issue is? Secondly WTF is the doctor doing putting them straight on pills when someone like me, who has a reasonable idea about health and fitness but not a healthcare professional can easily see what the issue is?

There’s no money in healthy patients. As you say, the answer is screamingly obvious.

However, I doubt he’s being particularly honest with his doctor.

I’ve drunk way less than over Christmas and my cognitive function is so much better. I’m convinced that if alcohol was invented now it would be illegal

Me too, i had 4 wines over two days last weekend, but that's been in. Also been eating better saw a nutritionist 3 weeks ago and she told me where i am going wrong, not enough carbs and protein and not eating enough to support exercise so not recovering properly, she upped my calories by about 400 a day and changed macros I feel so much better and it two weeks despite eating a fair bit more have lost 1.5 kilos. Just back from the gym for a lunchtime crossfit class and felt like superman today.

People were fighting over it in Aldi a few weeks ago. Had to laugh at all the parents queuing up at 6am for a bottle because their precious little one wanted it. Idiots.

Influencers have always existed, these are just a different type and because they are on social media it's more noticeable, especially for the kids.

Any examples?

Artists, musicians, models, fashion designers, actors etc.

Go back however far you want and people have been influencing others. Someone makes a song in a new genre, people are influenced by it and make something that sounds like it.

A model has a certain haircut and loads of people copy it.

How are people who influence people not the same as the current crop of people influencing other people?

The only difference is the media they use to do the influencing and the increased availability of said media.

Has everybody been on the booze tonight?

Went out for dinner, had two lime and sodas then a morretti with my dinner. That was all. Everyone else must have had 4-5 each. I drove which was happy to do and offered to do so and honestly after the first couple of sips of the beer could have taken or left it. I’m up ready to go to the gym, missus T still in bed as she had another one when we got home. Out again this evening with some other friends and kids, I’ll drive again and probably won’t even bother with one this time.

next week is going to be challenging  as in the US for work all week. These things are typically quite boozy.

Seriously?  Are you really struggling with the fact that people who 'influence' (verb) other people are called 'influencers' (noun), even after The Cat has given you the historical examples you asked for?

Thick cunt.

I can take it or leave it and it's been like that for about 15 years now.  I don't class myself as tea total as I usually have 3 or 4 'benders' every year (the worst kind of drinking, but meh!).  We don't drink at home and even when we go out for a meal we will rarely have anything other than soft drinks.

The benefits of not drinking far outweigh the temporary 'high' of getting pissed and the hangovers tend to take two days to recover from these days!

Hadn't seen this thread until now but it's been interesting to read your anecdotes - thanks to everyone for sharing.

I've been a hardcore craft beer wanker for a decade+, and for me hunting out shiny new releases is a hobby as much as it is about the drinking.

There's an app called Untappd where you can log what you've had (including a description, score out of 5, etc.)

Mostly joined it because friends did but ironically got suckered in more than any of them. To some extent it gamifies drinking (with 'badges' like the achievements or trophies you get on Xbox or PlayStation).

That said I've ignored the gamification since the first year of being on it. Tend to treat it more like a diary of good times and reminder of which brews I like best.

I've always worked in web, but through 2018 and 2019 took a swerve into managing craft beer pubs. Couldn't make enough of a go of it without moving cities (which we weren't prepared to do at the time), so that was that.

Last year an opportunity came up to manage my favourite pub in Southampton. Interviewed for it and after weighing it up I jumped at the chance. Work-wise I couldn't be happier - though naturally my consumption has ballooned.

I've always been blessed with being able to eat and drink whatever I want. Which makes it sound like I gorged and got away with it but I just mean I didn't have to think about moderation of treats etc.

Since mid 2020 I've lost consistency in my exercise too. Initially the more physical job was helping with that, but that's been more than outweighed by spending 40+ hours a week around booze, the freebies/brewery samples and eating crap due working patterns.

The food bit should be easy enough to solve; need to do more pre-prep and/or cooking when I've got the wherewithal. Thinking of doing Couch To 5k too, as I'm scared how long that distance would take me now (and it used to be a specialty).

Booze moderation is going to be trickier. By the nature of my job I need to keep on top of what's hot and what's going to sell...

Not drinking on shift would be a start, mind. I've had some nights recently where I've ended up nearly as pissed as if I'd had a night out. Which is fun but unnecessary, and in itself leads to impulsive decisions.

RE: low & no alcohol options, I've always had a passing interest in them and tried many. With January/Dryanuary I made a big effort to get interesting options into the pub.

We had Unity's 'Nonflux' on draft all month (a play on their flagship pale, Conflux), which wasn't indistinguishable but genuinely bloody tasty.

For my money Mash Gang are putting out the most worthwhile 0.5% beers on the market right now. Despite being a small venue we've already sold through about 50 cans of their stouts this year.

Some of their stuff is quite, er... Out there. Had a Sour Patch Kids-inspired one from them which was delicious but a soft drink in everything other than name.

The absolute best has been a kirschtorte stout called 'Reign In Blood'. Most low alc beers have fuck-all body - in part due to less residual sugars. This one's thick and creamy and lush (and without lactose, which is normally the cheat mode option). Tastes like a stouty black forest gateaux.

Last time my parents dropped down my dad tried one - he's gone from being nonplussed about non alc to buying these by the case online.

Anyway, didn't intend for this to be quite so long & rambling, but I guess I've typed it out now. Thanks again for the perspective. There's been an occasional voice in my head that I need to make some changes. Better now (mid-30s) than later.

Butchers Hook is a great little place. Will visit if back in Soton to see friends this year. Not been to King Olaf’s in Woolston yet where I grew up and have friends. This is the beer you were talking about and as someone who loves dark beers, tries low Abv/no Abv beers and is lactose intolerant that is definitely one to track down https://brewcavern.co.uk/product/reign-in-blood/

I had Purity 0.5 last weekend which was very good, Butcombe IPA 0.5 this weekend. Plus a couple of full alcohol pints.

Really interesting read, this. One of those threads I've read all the way through.

Seems a long time ago since my early/mid 20s where a heavy night out or the odd house party would be a regular occurrence. Since they slowed down as everyone got a little older and more responsible, I've naturally drank less. I've never been a huge home drinker other than the rare one here and there - never been overly bothered by it. Covid was definitely an exception, but that didn't really last long.

Not sure if it's an age thing, but I have found in the past that I could wake up feeling pretty fresh after a heavy night out,  but could equally feel a bit groggy the morning after a few bottles at home. Would be interesting to know why that is.

Only really have a couple every other week now. A new craft ale bar opened down here last year, so something a bit different.

I can completely understand those wanting to go teetotal - it's bonkers what it can do to people. Those of you looking to reduce your intake/abstain, I bid you all good luck!

Not my area anymore but used to be, where is that in Bitterne Triangle? What did it used to be? I've been away from Soton for 10 years.

Was a literal butchers shop in origin, but I believe a picture framing shop in-between.

In renovating the place the owners discovered the original wall tiling and motif (which had been hidden behind ghastly plaster).

I guess I'm biased but it has to be seen to be believed. And has the best 'community' feel I've ever experienced from a pub.

For years before I ran it, it was my favourite place to drink.

Cracking view down over Cobden Bridge. Sun trap from March to September. Big fan of grabbing takeaway bottles of draft beer and taking them the stumbling distance to Riverside Park.

This side of the city is hugely underrated, IMO.

Now you are making me nostalgic;

When I was born my parents were living in my Nan's house on Ash Tree Road; my earliest memory is being pushed over the bridge in my pram. A bit later I lived on Thorold Road for a couple of years. My grandad was the butcher in the CoOp on the Triangle, and I went to both Bitterne Park Infants and Juniors.

Back in the saddle now after given all clear by Doc, and taken off blood thinners. Must say the alcohol free stuff tasted pretty good. Nanny State & Ghost ship my favourites, but it’s not drinking and you don’t get the buzz. Few Tanglefoots today, and I confidently predict I’m not giving up (unless doc tells me). The buzz just ain’t the same .

I do Ghost Ship in the week. I don't like fizzy soft drinks and anything that is kind of beer like does for me that said I've got some draft Leffe Blond that in my beer machine that I need to finish before it goes off.

Is that the view from the bar? If so then is that chippy still open on the left, can’t remember it’s name but was decent. Also on the right used to have a chippy and kebab shop called Andy, family business really nice bunch. From about where that’s taken from there used to be an Indian restaurant called Bitterne Balti, before that is was an American style diner place. Further down there used to be a pet shop and newsagent the other side. Quite a lot of character history round the triangle area. When I was a kid some Sundays they have the small trains on those tracks in riverside park, not sure if they’re still there.
