Amazing cup tie that. I went up to Burnden Park for the original fixture. We were two nil up and absolutely strolling it. They made an attacking sub at half time, can't remember who it was that came on, but they ran us ragged in the second half. The noise their crowd made was tremendous. The atmosphere in the replay was brilliant too. Take a look a at that away end. Bolton brought thousands down, which for a midweek game was bloody impressive. I don't think I've seen a busier Dell.  That game, Swindon and Oldham all stick in m mind as the great midweek cup fixtures at the Dell atmosphere wise.

I was at the 1st fixture - a rare away day for me, we found a local working mens club before the game, about thrupence a pint IIRC, although my memory isn't what it was. We were lucky not to get beat in the end.

I was stood at the Archers End for Channon's goal of a thousand passes in 1982.  Easily the best goal that I have ever seen live.  We ended up losing 3-2, but it was a really good game.

For a team goal, Connelly against Middlesbro in 2011 wasn't bad.  Think that was 28 passes or so.

Cuco Martina against Arsenal. Nothing comes close. Second place would be Stern John against Hull and the bronze is won by Chris Baird against Palace on boxing day 2006 I think it was.

Edit: Re Cuco: I was at the other end of the stadium and about level with him so I saw the bend he got on it but I didn't realise until I got in just how far out he was! I thought he was in the penalty area (would have still been great)

Most of the one's I've seen have already been mentioned, but don't think Mane's goal lobbing Szczesny in the 2-0 win over Arsenal Jan 2015 has been mentioned yet. Great finish in my opinion.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain's last goal for Saints against Walsall on the final day too from memory was very good.

Schneiderlin vs Newcastle was a team goal that didnt get a lot of attention but was the kind that only happens in a team thats a confident and well oiled machine - we wouldn't score that goal now.

Another unheralded one IMO was Ings vs Spurs away in the cup game where Redmond broke and played him in, lovely goal. He was in the kind of form that as soon as the ball went to him you knew it would end in a goal. Summed up the best of those two players.

For a long range shot, Clyne at the Emirates was class - not many cleaner strikes than that.

Absolutely brilliant goal and a hell of a celebration in the away end

Best goal in my opinion is subjective. A 2 yard tap in can cause more emotion than a 35 yard flyer.
Best goal I ever saw at a Saint match was the first one I ever saw on Boxing Day 1976, goals doesn’t have to be special to change your life but I still will never be able to recreate the excitement stood underneath the old scoreboard in the Archers corner stood in a generic red & white shirt from from Toomers as an Xmas present (pre admiral) to think it was the best thing I had ever seen. That moment made me Saints for life .

Best goals ever as a Saints Fan apart from the above which will always be number one. Doesn’t matter if they were stunning or not but they count more than any others:

Bobby Stokes - Wembley 76 - 7 years old will never ever forget watching that go in on with my mum. She made me a flag to run around the estate with and every other kid and parents were out on the streets. I can never ever amigine that happening these days.
Steve Moran - Fratton Park  (In some ways better than the above as it’s fucked that lot up the road down ever since !And they have never got over it ). Nothing since despite the hurt it as caused us will ever be as bad as it caused then that day . I know a few and they cannot get over it when mentioned.

Marion’ s goal against the  fuckers is worth special mention as is Sir Rickie’s even though we lost as that roar was one of the loudest I have ever heard at St Mary,s

No 1: Best goal of all time. Channon against Liverpool. Awesome just showed what a real team can do.
No2: Keegan scissor kick against Man U - take away the fact it was disallowed. It was a fantastic goal and from the old family centre looked magnificent.
No.3 :Danny Wallace overhead kick against against the Scousers  Just brilliant ( Cross from the under appreciated Mark Dennis never made enough of) The header that night from Danny also wasn’t bad, Alan Hansen made to look like a right mug.

No.4 Golac Screamer . One of those that just made you go wow.
Matty goals not mentionedas they were all awesome

For old bugger a couple more recent ones that made me go wow:

The Wallcot goal from when he was young that I think someone mentioned earlier was  against Luton in the cup from the wing and was a very very good goal. As for Osvaldo against Man Cityit was just a wtf moment.

Le Tiss vs Newcastle twice at the dell and away at Blackburn .. Le Tiss told flowers during the match  he’d would score against him and would hit his gk towel hanging in the net .. he did exactly that !
Danny Wallace bicycle kick against the dippers on a cold Friday night under the lights at the dell was spectacular.. limbs 🙌is understatement packed under the east !

Agree also that Barry Horne goal from  the halfway line, also many that rod scored too many to remember haha

Of the ones I was there for…
1. MLT x 3 vs. Norwich (MLT at his absolute best on a freezing cold night at the Dell)

2. MLT flick up and volley free kick vs. Wimbledon (couldn’t believe he’d tried it, let alone scored it)

3. Wayne Thomas screamer vs. Ipswich (sat right behind it, could see it was going to fly in the moment it left his boot)

4. Horne vs. Bolton (for the pitch invasion)

5. Ruddock last-minute penalty vs. Newcastle (for the celebration)

Honorary mention for Clyne’s thunderbolt vs Arsenal at the Emirates as it knocked them out and I know a lot of gooners!

That was the first one that came to mind for me too. I was sat in the Itchin (which I don't normally do but fancied a change and was just over his shoulder when he listened to the crowd and smashed it in. My wife (Norwich fan) went nuts too, the hardest she'd ever celebrated a Saints goal!

Graziano Pelle's against QPR was special too. Chaz Austin scored a decent goal on the spin to equalise and just a few minutes later Pelle overhead kicked it in for the winner. Damn we had a good team then back when we could attract the creme de la creme of European talent.

I saw a lot of games in our League One days, it was those seasons I went to SMS most but weirdly not many goals stand out for me as crackers but I must have seen some.

I was 11 and staying with Granny and Grandad in Dale Valley road - those were the days before double glazing and you could hear folk cheering outside - then at full time car horns on Winchester Road. Like you say I doubt you would see scenes like that these days.............................be nice to get into that position to find out.

Yup. That's mine too. I don't suppose there were cameras at that game?

One of the few times even the opposition fans were applauding.  If you've ever seen film of  the home game against West Ham  where we came from 3-0 down and drew 3-3 Tom wins a penalty. It was a similar run to that from half way but he rounded Bobby Moore and put the ball in the net.

describe the goal to us.

It was a long time ago and I was considerably younger. As I remember we were along one side of the pitch towards the end Saints were kicking to. Tommy got the ball on the left, the far side from us, maybe halfway in our half. Then he just ran and ran beating numerous opponents before firing home. As Tom & Jerry says the entire ground was applauding and we couldn't really believe what we had just seen.

But maybe there's an element of nostalgia in there too. Looks like we'll never know if there were no cameras there.

Probably 1957/58 before TV and Saints in Division three. I've never seen a better goal anywhere, ever, Don Roper in the centre circle volleyed the ball so hard on a flat trajectory that it flew under the diving goalkeeper hit the steel net support at the back of the goal and rebounded down and out under the still airborne goalkeeper. I was behind the old dugout in the West Stand on the centre line. I've never seen a harder shot since, including the Great Bobby Charlton who had a rocket shot.

Seeing as we are now just mentioning good Saints goals..no one has mentioned Valery v Utd. At the time we thought he would become a top full back.😅

As soon as he started lining up the shot, I knew that was going in the top corner. There was just something about it.

I know it’s the opposite of the subject but I couldn’t think where else to put it. Three years ago today this happened even now it beggars belief we didn’t score

Cedric's best game at St Mary's was AGAINST us. A really poor player all in all, I can't think of a single aspect of the game that he was actually good at. I guess he wasn't slow...That's it...

I sometimes think Cedric accidentally ended up at right back, so just played there. Some of his best moments for Saints were randomly high up on the left (goals against Wigan and Pompey) and he never seemed to actually know how to defend.
